  • Install a Bootable Sata Hard Drive to an Old Mobo With Ide Ports Only?

got an old Packard Bell on XP that I want to upgrade before XP support finishes - fitted a SATA controller accessory card (PCI) which is recognized OK and new SATA HDD shows up OK with old IDE drive also connected, but when I detach the IDE drive, PC gets stuck part way through boot sequence - screen shows usual Windows light blue background, with inch hide dark blue borders top and bottom, and the windows flag logo with word "Windows" - and just hangs there forever.

I formatted the new SATA drive with NTFS on another PC, and copied the original HDD with Clonezilla bootable CD - when both drives are connected, it appears that the OS is coming from the new SATA drive, which baffles me completely! (I put a dumy text file in the desktop folder of each drive, so I can tell which one is giving the OS - Edrive.txt on the SATA and Cdrive.txt on the IDE .

I have tried every possible permutation of BIOS settings, which are pretty limited on this old beast.

When I got desperate and tried to install XP afresh on the SATA drive, Win XP setup said "no hard drive found"

So the bottom line question is this....

Does a SATA HDD have to be fitted to a mobo with native SATA sockets in order to be detected properly and be able to boot from that drive? Or is there a way to make this work with a SATA adaptor card?

(I know - that's 2 questions!) Thank you for reading this far! ;-)

  • Win 7 mobo upgrade problem?

Hello folks, I just upgraded my mobo, CPU and RAM and have hit a snag

Old build worked fine with Win 7 home premium 64 (upgraded easily from Win XP Pro) on a Geforce 7050M mobo, with Phenom X4 9500 2.2GHz CPU and 4GB of DDR2 RAM, but I "feel the need for speed" so I bought a new mobo: Z-ASUS Crosshair V Formula AMD990FX (socket AM3+), a new CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2GHz Black Edition, and 8GB of DDR3 1600C9 Corsair Vengeance RAM

completed transplant, reconnected everything (already had decent Corsair 650W PSU) including my trusty Nvidia 8800GTX and switched on - sweet - nothing went pop or started smoking, but I got an error message "Can't find any device"

I tried different SATA connections with my Seagate 80GB boot drive (type ST380215AS) but no joy - even tried booting up on my genuine Win7 CD - been fritzing about for 4 hours - including Win7 repair utility - and run out of steam - any PC guru out there got any ideas please?

  • HTML code to go to location on mapped image?

I have an image of a map of UK, with highlighted & mapped locations on it, for various engineers throughout UK – if you click any of the mapped links, it takes you to the relevant <name> tag on a large HTML list of engineers. That code works fine.

If possible, I want to have the reverse option, so if I click on a link on the list of engineers, it takes you to the matching location on the UK map image (and/or highlights that location).

I have searched all my usual sources of useful code, and can only find info on links from mapped images – nothing about text pages with links to hot spots on an image.

All suggestions much appreciated – the simpler the better please!

  • Can anybody identify this cat breed?

we just took on this little lady, who is allegedly some sort of pedigree cat, about 2 1/2 years old.

I think she is a pretty, little domestic short-hair and am quite happy if she is entirely "non-pedigree".

She is quite petite, talks a lot, and has the cute habit of standing up on her back legs like a meerkat!
