  • What's the difference betwen shot, sand and grit blasting ?

I need something I can use on a whole vehicle, to clean heavy rust off chassis and large items that will not fit in a blasting cabinet (whole engines, axles etc...) but I also need to clean corrosion off very small parts too (wheel cllinders, castings, nut's and bolts etc).

I'm told a 13 to 16 cfm compressor will be needed, thats no problem, I just don't know if I need sand, grit or shot blasting gear and what the actual difference is ?

This is for DIY car work, on very old very rusty corroded vehicles, tending more towards salvage of useable parts than concourse d'elegance restoration work. We are talking about cars that have been parked in the rain for 15 years, but I need to remove and clean up half shafts and brake drums etc...

So... Ladies and Gentlemen.... Qnswers please, guidance, suggestions ? ALL welcome as I am about to pay out good hard earned money on blasting equipment, I want to buy the right thing for the job, and the sales men just want to sell me EVERYTHING without actualy worrying about what I need.

Most comprehensive answer wins the points.

What I want to know is... What are they, as in, name of the aircraft please.

I'm sorry my previous question was a little un-clear, and thanks for the answers so far.

  • Magneto, but from what car ?

I have a 'Magneto' (?), It's been in the shed for 30plus years, but it's still happy to give me a nasty shock if I spin it up and hold on to the HT leads.

My question is, what vehicle did it come from ?

It has the following information : The bakelite parts have BTH moulded into them (manufacturer ?) and the plate says Type J4 then has Form T7 stamped into it. Below that, the serial number 4L874128 and then the three following patent numbers, 409036, 422863 and 433221

Someone out there must know... Is it you ?

It could (possibly) be one of the following car makes, but that's not a certainty.

    Woolsley (Hornet?)

    Riley

    Armstrong-Siddley

    Morris (Cowley or possibly oxford)

Citroen (unlikely to be in english though, on the plate)

Once it's identified, it's going on eBay, so if youre interested... Let me know and I can forward a listing number.

  • What's the top speed you've had indicated in your Vectra ? (or heard about)?

During a recent cretin/genius moment, I took my reliable 'bog-standard' 1999 Vectra 2.0ls to a very long, very straight track (The type aeroplanes land on) warmed her up for a couple of minutes and then nailed it.

The speed-o was showing in excess of 120 (not by much) but I wonder... How fast would it go without serious damage ? Mine was certainly hot (not boiling though), and was going balls out to reach this speed without sounding too nasty, but then it's an ex British Telecom fleet car, and is now a family run around... It's been around the block a few times and the engine is VERY VERY run in.

I dont give a hoot about MPG (never have)....What's the best (i.e highest) recorded MPH for a un mod'ed 2.0ls Vectra ?

  • Transformer question, what and where do I find.... ?

I have cooked a transformer in a pair of speakers, but I dont know much about electronics or components. So... The one I have says I/P: 220v -50Hz O/P:9v - 0.2a and I need to replace it, but can't find anything in the maplin catalogue that looks right, also my transformer has 4 wires (2 in, 2 out) and all the ones I see in the Map-cat have six.

Can anyone tell me what I need to be looking for ? or maybe even give me a maplin / RS part number or similar.

I am in the UK. The transofmer is the mains input for desktop speakers.

    Thank you !

  • What is this warning lamp FOR ???

I have a late 90's Volvo 940gl Turbo (Long story, and I'm not keeping it for long enough to tell).

Yesterday (at great expense) I replaced the Airflow meter, since when there has been an illuminted warning lamp on the dashboard.

It is a green triangle on a yellow background within the triangle there is a shape like an upside down lower case letter y. It's at the left hand end of the warning lamp array on the dashboard, under the speedo and rev counter.

What is this car trying to tell me ?

Best and most accurate answer before I advertise the car next week get's the points !

    Cheers !!

  • Police now called Gavers ? Gava ? What ?

Ok, It's a traveler word, although all the local wanna be pikey kids use it too. But where does it originate ?

I checked Urban Dictionary . com. Nothing there to illuminate the word further than telling me that it's the word in use.

  • Burns compensation...?

Just to say, thanks for reply's so far, I have updated the question. Not wishing to type it all in again, people who asked for more info... I added that.

    Thanks

  • Offered compenation?

2 yrs ago I got 2nd degree burns to my hands and arms, minor burns to my face and back. I have no lasting injury, and no "stress" type stuff. As much as it could have been fatal, it was not, and I am happy enough to be alive and kicking.... But...

Is £1000 compensation about right ? It seems high... I don't even have a scar.

    Thoughts please.

  • Vectra started to overheat a little, then misfired and was then Ok again ?

On the A14 yestarday, clear and dry. doing about the speed limit... I noticed a slight misfire then nothing.... then a sudden serious lack of power and misfire bad enough to get me off the main road before it stopped all together.

I pulled up, gave it 5 minutes, checked for anything obvious, found nothing and set off again keeping the speed down at about 50/60 max driving back home along B-roads instead (wishing to avoid a breakdown on a dual carriageway) and had no further problems. I got back on the M1, then across to the A1M, and had no problems there either.... but was not about to try my luck.

I'm not loosing water, no scrambled egg in the oil, everything seems normal so what the hell was it ?

    Any suggestions or answers welcome.

  • Is there a special Volvo tool for the sunroof ?

We have a stonking £500 second hand 940gle, it's sunroof opens but will not close without lot's of time and effort. Is there a special tool that enables you to close the sunroof manually (without using the power). ?

I took the cover off the motor housing (just in front of the sunroof) and there appears to be a slot cut in the motor shaft so it can be turned, but it will not turn unless a release mechanism inside is held open.... and yes.... you cant hold that open and turn a screwdriver in the slot....

ANY suggestions please !! (and don't say "buy another car")
