  • I'm worried about my niece?

My niece is 18 and she recently started university. She came to me yesterday and told me, in tears, that she doesn't understand any of her readings. Basically, she can read the words, but the sentences make little sense to her and after reading a passage from a Harry Potter book aloud to me (slow-ish and using her finger to follow the words, but all correct), she couldn't tell me what it was about. Apparently she has always struggled with this and never read any books throughout high school - she somehow managed to get straight A*'s in subjects including English Lit without reading anything or revising from books. She is clearly not stupid and she can write reasonably well and her spelling is good, but she avoids reading like the plague.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing her problems? Is there anything I can do to help?

  • Quick questionnaire about virginity?

To lose one's virginity is a big thing for people in many cultures. So, what does it mean to you?

Do you think it is important?

What would you consider to be the definition of losing one's virginity?

Does your culture/upbringing set an age limit (not talking legally, more socially) or is there another point in time that might signify that you are allowed/ready to lose you virginity?

Would you tell someone (a parent, friend, religious leader, etc) if you lost your virginity?

Would you be ashamed to lose it in the 'wrong' way?

Is it different for men and women?

Please also state what culture/community/country you are from if possible.

This is for an anthropological study to get a general overview only. No personal information, quotes, paraphrasing or any way to identify you or your account will be used.

  • How do Americans pronounce this word?

I have always wondered, how do Americans pronounce paedo/pedo (as in the shortened version of paedophile/pedophile). In Britain, we say pee-do. Does your lack of 'a' change the pronunciation? How would you pronounce it? (Please give rough area/accent if relevant)

  • Is it possible to uninstall a Sims 3 update?

I recently installed Sims 3 onto my laptop (Acer Butterfly I think) and it worked ok - bit slow in places, but that's understandable. I also have Pet Stories, Castaway, and Medieval, all of which run fine. I installed the latest update today, so it's now running 1.24.3. Now the game is really slow to the point of being unbearable to play. It freezes every 4ish sim minutes (including during the night and on every speed setting) on a one sim household. I have put it on minimum settings and it's in window mode but it hasn't made any difference. I downloaded it from EA so I'm not playing it from a disk. I have an external hard drive, but I don't think I can install it onto that.

Would uninstalling the update restore my game to how it was (not overly fussed about keeping save files/families I've created, but it would be nice)? Is it even possible to uninstall the update? Is there anything else I can do to make the game run any faster?

  • American parents: Which do you find easiest?

My family and I are moving from Wales to Michigan for a year for me to study with the university there in Ann Arbor. We all have names which are relatively rare in the US, so I wanted some input as to which you would find easiest to pronounce/remember/spell. Please note that the kids are used to using their middle names as their first names, as my Italian family cannot pronounce their Welsh names. Obviously this won't be an official thing, just what we will introduce ourselves and our children as.

I'll give you 2 or 3 options for each of us, so please pick 1 or put them in order from easiest to hardest or whatever. Feel free to comment if you want too.

Colwyn - Isaiah - Teodoro (eye-Z-EYE-ah, he hates the American ih-Z-AY-ah)

    Celyn - Elijah - Leopoldo

  • One day long period. Erm, why?

I have PCOS, so I only get my periods 3 or 4 times a year (some years I get 5, others I get none, it varies) and they each normally last about 12 to 16 days. The shortest I've had before was 9 days, the longest was 22 days. They are always very heavy, with super tampons lasting at most 2 hours.

Last week, I had a light period which only lasted one day. It had been 2 months since my last period. There was a slight cramping, but nowhere near what I usually get and it went away with paracetamol. I used a pad in the morning and a tampon in the afternoon and, even after leaving the tampon in for 6 hours, it was nowhere near full. This has got me slightly worried, since my periods are usually so long and heavy and painful and this one was the complete opposite.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what might have caused it?

What sort of chores would you consider appropriate for a 13 year old girl, a 10 year old boy and an 8 year old boy? How many per week? What rewards/punishments?

  • Help! What do I call them?

My partner and I have been looking after my niece and two nephews (ages 13, 10 and 8) after my sister stopped being able to look after them in February. They are half-siblings of my six children (all have the same father). We are currently their legal guardians and my sister has asked us to start the process of adopting them, which all of the children are ok with. All nine use our first name rather than calling us mum to avoid confusion (2 mum family). I would love to just say that I have nine children rather than separating them out into my biological children, my partner's biological children and my sister's biological children, but I'm not sure if that's the standard way to do this.

Do we call the three children our children? Are we now their mums? Step-mums? Are we still just aunts?

This is for a middle name for our new arrival. It will be used as a first name when we speak Italian/Sicilian or when we go to visit my family in Sicily, so it has to be a good one!

He has 5 siblings whose Italian names are:

    Samanta

    Maria

    Leopoldo

    Teodoro

    Elisabetta

    It also has to fit into the rest of his name, which is;

    Cai Josiah _____ Russo-Jones.

    All suggestions are gratefully received!!

  • Middle name suggestions please?

I gave birth to a little girl 5 days ago and my wife is due to have a little boy in three weeks. We have their first names chosen, but are still undecided on middle names.

They have 4 older siblings whose names are:

    Carys Olivia Samanta (f) (kah-riss oh-liv-ee-ah sah-man-tah)

    Caerwyn Ahijah Maria (f) (care-win ah-hee-jah mah-ree-ah)

    Colwyn Isaiah Teodoro (m) (koll-win eyes-eye-ah tay-oh-dor-oh)

    Celyn Elijah Leopoldo (m) (kell-in eh-lye-jah lee-oh-poll-doh)

These are the names we have so far:

    Cariad Adaiah (f) (cah-ree-ad ah-dye-ah)

    Cai Josiah (m) (kye jo-sye-ah)

We are looking for Italian names for the second middle name. Any suggestions? Thanks.

  • Question about the Pill?

My wife is due to give birth soon and after that, she wants to go back on the Pill, which she takes to regulate her periods as she suffers from PCOS. However, the nature of the syndrome means that she has no idea how soon after giving birth her periods will return - it could be 3 weeks, it could be 11 months, as her cycle length varies a lot.

I know that you're meant to start taking the Pill on the first day of your period, but how strict is that? She could be waiting a year for her next period, but she'd like to return to the Pill sooner rather than later, in order to reduce the pain of her next period. Can she just randomly start on the Pill and expect her periods to conform to the new cycles or does she have to wait for her next one to come?

  • Should we treat them as twins or just siblings? Also need naming help?

My partner and I are pregnant. She is due 4 weeks before me. Should we consider the babies twins or do you think they should be considered siblings? (They have the same father).

Also, how close should their names be? Their older siblings are called Carys, Caerwyn, Colwyn and Celyn (Colwyn and Celyn are identical twins). We are considering the following:

    Caeren

    Caelen

    Cariad

    Cai

    Caridwen

    Cadoc

    Catrin

    Ceirios

    Cadfael

What do you think? Rate? Best/worst? Any additions? Any feedback is very much appreciated.

  • Upcoming CP - couple of questions?

For our civil partnership next month, we are having 2 ceremonies - one in Wales with her family and one in Italy with my family. We are entering from opposite corners at the back of the room and walking up the aisle together. For the second ceremony, my father is keen to push me (I'm a manual wheelchair user), as a way of giving me away. However, for the first ceremony, we are still undecided as to what will happen. I could push myself or my fiancee could push me or someone else could push me?

When we get to the front and for the vows, we have three choices: I could bring a standing frame and stand up, although the frame is quite hefty. I could remain seated and she could remain standing. Or, she could sit down next to me. Opinions?
