I love my rats. Sugar, Dash and Pepper. Sometimes when I have free time I try and do my best to answer Y!A questions and emails, mainly in rodents. I like to answer all questions in rodents but I do not get the chance to, so many are posted between 3-8 I just can't catch up, so I focus just on rat answers. Sorry, but I do get around. My sign off is Hope I helped, just for your information =p. Feel free to mail me.

  • Take the derivative of (x)/(sqrt (x+5))?

    When I take the derivative of (x)/(sqrt (x+5)) I use the quotient rule and get: [(x+5)^(-.5) times x - (sqrt (x+5)] / (2(x+5))

    What am I doing wrong?

  • Freezer dried fruits for rats?

    Hello,

I got a package of freezer dried bananas, and I was wondering if I could give it to my rats as a treat. They love bananas but I don't like putting them in the cage because they get covered with bedding.

    What do you think?

  • Guinea pig owners...?

    Hello,

I have been researching guinea pigs (I might adopt them in a few months) and I was wondering if males and females have any personality differences in relation to humans. Are males or females more energetic?

    I'm looking for a couch potato =)

    Thanks,

  • What do you think are the most important things to tell new guinea pig owners?

    Hello,

I was wondering what the Y!A community thinks the fifteen most important things are to tell new guinea pig owners. I'm not buying a guinea pig (although I want one) I'm just wondering what people think they are.

I think it would be helpful if you did ten things you should do for your guinea pig and five things you shouldn't.

The person who answers with the most complete guide in 15 things, will get 10 points.

    Thanks,

  • Quote from the bible discussion?

    Isaiah 45:7 (King James Version):

I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.

Doesn't this pretty clearly say that God created evil?

  • God - The good, The bad, Not his problem?

Hey there - thanks for reading my question.

I am agnostic, probably leaning more towards atheism than a specific religious belief but anyways here is my question.

It seems to me people always credit God (or gods depending) on the good things. God cured my cancer, God saved my life, God turned my life around.. etc etc etc etc.

But when it is something bad, say a war. "God doesn't create the evil in the world, people do. It isn't God's fault, people are doing those things. Why should God always be blamed, the people did those things."

Why do you think this is -

Do you think it is right -

And why do you believe that God did all the good things instead of people, say angiogenesis researchers.

  • Red speckles in rat bedding / nesting area.?

    Hey there,

First thanks for reading and possibly answering my question. I would prefer it if only rat owners with considerable knowledge answered, but all are welcome.

Well today when I woke up this morning I checked out my rats and their cage. Filled up water bottle, added food and some veggies, etc. Then I noticed in their nesting area (they have an area where they move bedding to and sleep in) I noticed that there were a lot of tiny red speckles. I first guessed this was blood, so I examined all my rats, I didn't find any marks / cuts on them. So I thought maybe this happened because one of my rats (Dash) was in heat last night? That is my first question.

If it isn't that, what else could it be? Porphyrin build up in urine? Can that happen?

Only one of my rats shows any symptoms of porphyrin production, my albino rat Sugar. She also has been going through some over grooming lately, if that is relevant.

What do you think it is, and more importantly should they go to the vet?

    Thanks,

  • Hamster question HELP!!?

    Hey,

First off sorry for the title, it is somewhat misleading.

I was wondering why so many people post questions about housing TWO Syrian hamsters together.

Has anyone ever done a quick Google search "Syrian hamster fighting", "Syrian hamster solitary". What do those people THINK?

Why do you think people still buy Syrians in pairs?

Why do you think pet stores sell them in pairs?

Do you think pet stores should be allowed to sell them in pairs?

Do you think people should be able to buy them in pairs?

Any personal stories you would like to share about why you need to separate Syrian hamsters is welcome.

  • Veterinary care in small animals?

    Hey guys,

Well more and more it seems that on these forums people are asking for ways to treat their pets at home. Why do the buy these animals if they cannot afford proper veterinary care?

I've always said "don't get the pet if you can't pay the vet", yet seemingly people either cannot afford to or don't see the point in paying for a "cheap" animal.

How much did they cost to have? What about children who are adopted? Should they not have proper medical care?

My question to you is this -

    1. Why do you think people get animals if they cannot afford proper care (that includes veterinary care, proper caging, and proper bedding and toys)?

and 2. What are your personal thoughts on the subject?

    Thanks

  • Ratty quiz for you ratty experts (or owners)?

    Hey guys,

Well I thought I would make up a short rat quiz to test the knowledge of the rat answering community.

    One rule -

Don't copy other peoples answers, this test is to get an idea of whose information you can trust about rats on Y!A.

1-3 are true or false questions

    1. True or False, female rats if spayed have a lower risk of cancer?

    2. True or False, male rats cannot be housed with other male rats?

    3. True or False, male rats cannot have oranges but females can?

4-10 are short short answer questions

    4. If a rat has a red discharge from their nose, what might they have? And what is this substance around the nose called?

    5. A rat is pregnant (an owner sees the mating taking place) approximately how long will it be until the rat has its babies and how many will there be (on average)?

    6. Name 5 treats that are acceptable for rats, 5 treats that are unacceptable for rats and 5 treats that can be given in moderation for rats.

    7. How many cubic feet is recommended per rat in a cage?

    8. Name 3 reasons why rats should be housed in at least pairs.

    9. Please name at least 5 different rat colorings.

    10. Explain the difference between standard and dumbo ears and the difference between rex and normal coat.

The person who gets the best score will get the best answer, all people who answer the questions correctly will be acknowledged.

    Extra credit:

If you are feeding a pregnant mother or a litter of new born ratlets, what should you emphasize in their diets?

    A: Fats

    B: Sugars

    C: Carbohydrates

    D: Proteins

  • Guinea pig question haha 20 characters now Y!A?

    Hey,

I am thinking about getting a pair of guinea pigs (in the future) and I had a couple of questions I would like to ask people.

First - what pair of guinea pigs do people suggest, male or female ( I DO NOT WANT TO BREED)

Second - Are C&C cages easy to build? None of the petsmart / petco cages seem big enough for cavies

Third - There are no guinea pig breeders in my area, in your opinion should I get it from a shelter (MGPR) or from a "backyard breeder"

Fourth - If I get it from a shelter should I get a very young pair to bond with me, a older pair that is already tamed or a neutered boy / girl pair?

Fifth - what is the best bedding for guinea pigs, this one I get different answers on.

    Thanks so much =)

  • Porphyrin on PEW rat?

    Hey,

First thanks for reading / possibly answering this question.

One of my three female rats ( Sugar ) is a pink eyed white (PEW). Her fur on the back of her neck (not all the way down her back just the neck area) and on the side of her neck are stained a reddish brown color, like porphyrin. I should point out here that it is extremely light, its almost like 90% white fur, 10 % reddish color.

The only thing is, I have never seen porphyrin around her eyes or nose. She is completely healthy, well tamed and well fed with almost no stress in her life.

My other two rats are black hooded and agouti, so maybe they have the same thing but it just isn't showing up on them?

    Here are my two questions-

    1. Is this something that should be checked out by a vet?

    2. How would I remove this 'stained' reddish color from her fur

    Thanks very much

  • Question for a hamster / rodent expert?

    Hey,

Recently there have been a few people in the rodent section who claim to be experts. (Yes I'm looking at you Bre). Not only is this sad and pathetic, it is also misleading to the people who follow their advice. Bre claims he is an expert about rodents when he also says he is 11 years old. When he is answering a question he will say he has '18 guinea pigs and 10 hamsters' or '8 guinea pigs 2 hamsters 4 rats' it changes every time.

This is supposed to be a question so here it is,

What do you think about people who pose as experts on Y!A when they clearly aren't?

And for you Bre, stop saying you are an expert. -.-

  • Rat question (its 20 words now)?

    Hey,

I have had my three rat girls for a little over a month (about 32 days) and they are all doing great, they love play time their diet is healthy no signs of illness etc. etc.

However, although they love being out they do NOT like to be picked up.

They scuttle to the other side of the cage.

I assume I am doing something wrong when I pick them up? They are all hand tame and take food from me etc. but they do not like the picking up part?

Any help would be much appreciated

    Thanks so much

  • Dear guinea pig community?

    Hello,

I am looking into guinea pigs, and I have done lots of research ( I am not getting them any time soon but maybe in the future) but one thing I find so much controversy on his how many and if they should be male or female.

I have decided I want males, one that is more relaxed and will just sit with me. However, I read that they are A) happier in groups but B) will fight.

I seem to read about equal amounts for A and B.

Will bucks fight each other? Or well they be good friends.

    Thank you very much

And if you have any tips that would be great

  • Quick Pet Rat Question?

    Hey guys,

Two of my three rats (Sugar and Dash) curl their tails up when they walk around. Is it because of the wire flooring on the cage? Or is because they are the only two to run / walk in the wheel.

    All answers very much appreciated.

And a web link to verify what you say would be great.
