which phone cards to buy to call from China to US?
I'll be in China for 10 days and am looking for a phone cards to call from China to US. I won't have a cell phone, so I'll call either from a hotel or from a phone booth somewhere in China.
Please send me your recommendations. I'm looking for quality and "guaranteed/proven to work" instead of the cheapest and having to jump through fires to make my first phone call.
Thanks.
5 AnswersChina1 decade agowhat will be my (income) tax rate for 401K withdrawal after retirement?
Let's say I'm 65 years old now, not yet retiring. My current income is about $200K, so my income tax rate is the highest (state & federal.)
In a few years, I will retire and plan to withdraw about $50K per year from my tax-deferred 401K account.
What will be my tax rate then?
7 AnswersPersonal Finance1 decade agoreal estate loan denied; transaction failed; whose fault is it?
A friend of mine is in the middle of this strange situation. He had a real estate agent representing him in buying a house; offer was accepted. However, he applied the loan himself, not relying on the real estate agent's help nor her recommendation. The escrow was supposed to close this week. Now his lender informed him that his loan would not be approved because his greencard status had expired! First question: given the timeframe (the seller has already moved out, etc.), what options does he have? Second question: if the transaction falls through, will he lose the deposit? Last question: if he loses the deposit, whose fault is it: my friend's fault, the real estate agent's fault, or the lender's fault?
8 AnswersRenting & Real Estate1 decade agoDo I have to provide any explanation for cancelling a real-estate contract by not removing loan contingency?
I signed a contract to buy a house ten days ago, with a clause to remove loan contingency today. After seeing all the numbers provided by the lenders and concerning that the market might fall further, I have decided to cancel this contract. I told the seller's agent, in writing of course, that I'd not remove the loan contingency and cancel the contract instead. Now the sellers and their agent are asking me again and again with more "explanations"; otherwise, they would not release my deposit check. Who is right?
7 AnswersRenting & Real Estate1 decade agowash sales on a gain?
I just sold my stock A for a long-term loss of $50K.
I then sold my stock B for a long-term gain of $50K.
Can I then immediately buy back stock B (same number of shares) and still offset the two gain/loss to not pay tax on B's 50K capital gain? If yes, wouldn't this be an always-win situation for me: not having to pay tax on B's 50K and now own the same number of B's shares at a higher cost-basis?
5 AnswersUnited States1 decade agowho is responsible for keeping track of 401K's rollover accounts' cost basis?
I have recently rolled over many of my former employers' 401K accounts into my current 401K account. None of the statements mentioned anything about the breakdown of these transfer amounts, e.g. their cost basis right before the transfer.
Do I have to know the cost basis of all my 401K accounts?

1 AnswerPersonal Finance1 decade agoAre federal and state tax rates the same for 401K distribution as ordinary income?
I read somewhere that we "might also pay state tax" on 401K distribution and wonder where the "might" happens vs. "might not". Also if 401K distribution is the main source of income, then will I be taxed the same as that is my income? In that case, what is the current tax rate? Thanks in advance!
8 AnswersUnited States1 decade agoHow to calculate capital gain & tax for ESPP?
Specific Scenario:
1. Through my company's ESPP, I bought 1000 shares at price $10. At that time, the market price is $20.
2. Now about two years later, I'll sell it for the price of $30 per share.
Questions:
a. did I pay any tax on the $10 gain I made at the time I bought these shares?
b. what is my capital gain now? Is that 1000 x ($30-$10) or 1000 x ($30-$20)?
Thanks in advance!
United States1 decade agoWhich state has the best 529 plan?
I have visited http://savingforcollege.com/ but unless I visit all the links, I couldn't answer this question. I'm just looking for a good one in term of having a few decent investment options (not too many is ok just ranging from conservative to aggressive) and (importantly) low management fee.
1 AnswerPersonal Finance1 decade agoHow to best get a combination of mortage and line of equity to buy a second property?
Hypothetical situation:
* I have paid off the mortage of my primary residence, appraised at about $600K
* I'm now interested in using the equity of the above house to buy a second/rental/investment property, sold price of $200K. How should I do it?
Option 1: apply for a home equity line from my primary residence, e.g. about $40K equity line to down payment for the second property and get a $160K mortgage.
Option 2: is there a way that I can apply for a $200K mortgage off the primary residence to pay off the second house? If possible, wouldn't this be better than option 1?
Thanks in advance!
3 AnswersRenting & Real Estate1 decade agoCan I invest in both "state-run" 529 plan and independent 529 plan at the same time? Any gotchas?
should I even consider this at all? For example, I'm living in California and wonder if it is a good idea to invest in the independent 529 plan and a california 529 plan at the same time, like 50% of my investment in each?
