Weight decrease with altitude?
I've heard reliably that as a mass is brought further away from the center of the earth, its weight decreases. Does anyone have a simple formula for, for example, if a person who weighs 100 lb. at sea level travels to a city 5,000 or 7,000 ft above sea level, or a mountaintop 12,000 or 29,000 feet above sea level, how much that person will weigh at each of these locations?
1 AnswerPhysics1 decade agoPeak wastewater flow from dormitory?
Are there standards for estimating the peak instantaneous wastewater flow from a large dormitory. I have info such as the number of toilets and the number of shower heads, and I am inclined to think that peak flow would be with about 90% of the toilets and shower heads operating simultaneously, but that yields a very large number for peak flow.
3 AnswersEngineering1 decade agoWhat ever happened to E.J.Korvette's?
I grew up in Brooklyn, NY in the 60's and 70's and left about 30 years ago. I recently visited again and heard that Korvette's department store is no more. I remember the one at Bay Parkway and the Belt Parkway as being an outstanding store, and had heard that there were others around the NY metro area. What ever happened to the chain?
2 AnswersNew York City1 decade agoGreek alphabet in Help?
When I call up Help or Tutorial from any program on my computer, the help or tutorial information displays using the Greek alphabet. It is readable (if you translate each character to its English equivalent), but sometimes difficult to read because, for example, rho, which replaces R, looks like P. What would cause this and how can it be corrected?
2 AnswersOther - Computers2 decades agoTwo questions for Mormons?
I am a practicing Catholic, but am not close-minded. I have read the Book of Mormon, having been told by Mormon missionaries that if I read it with an open mind and prayed for guidance, God would reveal to me that it truly is His word. Instead, after reading and prayer I had a bunch of suspicions about the book. Two of the easiest to repeat are:
1. During the exodus, pharao's chariots were destroyed. Therefore, at the time of the exodus, the Israelites knew about the wheel. If a group of them left the middle east at a later date and settled in the Americas, why did native Americans know nothing of the wheel when Columbus arrived? I cannot fathom an entire civilization forgetting about the wheel.
2. If one searches the Bible for occurrences of the word, "smoke," one finds that the only person who smokes in the Bible is God the Father, in Psalms 18 or 19, depending on which Bible translation you use. If God the Father smokes, why are Mormons are so opposed to smoking?

There are a few English words (in Webster's dictionary) in which "W" is the only vowel. I remember running into one or two long ago. One was an obscure Scottish word. Does anyone remember any of them?
4 AnswersWords & Wordplay2 decades agoOBD-II data retrieval?
I recently bought a new car with OBD-II. I understand that it records all kinds of data, but that only the manufacturer's computers can access most of it. I got a code reader that shows and resets trouble codes, but I wonder if there is a device out there to allow me to download much more data to my laptop.
