I bought a verizon phone online and I activated it today. Will my service on my old phone be terminated automatically or do I need to do something?

My left ear was hurting today during school so I decided to take my earring out and clean my piercing and my ear. To my surprise my earring hole had become a bloody scab. I have had an infection before so I pressed on my ear until puss stopped coming out. It is still swollen, hot and hurts mildly to touch. I went to the doctors last time because during the night my ear had ate earring and she had to take it out. Please help me and tell me what I need to do.
