  • How should I handle hints at a suicide attempt from someone I know who's in prison?

I try to be a good christian and have tried to be emotionally supportive of someone I know who got sentenced to 40 years in prison. If he doesn't win his appeal he won't get out for 39 more years when he's 75 years old. Due to the length of the sentence they have him in maximum security, although he is not violent.

He has repeatedly alluded to the fact that he's not mentally equipped to serve that much time and is going to kill himself if he loses his appeal next month. I can't say as I blame him. He was offered a plea deal for 8 years by the D.A. but he rolled the dice and went to trial and lost and now he's doing 40. He is still a human being, although it's quite possible that he deserves the sentence he has been given.

What can I do to help him-- or at least not hurt him?

  • Am I justified to ask my roommate to help pay for stuff that's broke?

A friend is renting a room in my house and stuff keeps coming up broken that he seems to be involved with. Yesterday when I went to start the snow blower a pair of shoes that he'd left lying in front of it got sucked in and shattered some gears inside it. Today I noticed that there is a small crack in the kitchen sink that wasn't there a week ago and goes all the way through so it leaks if I put water in it. He of course does not admit to it, but it's only he and I living here. He also used my bike without asking and somehow popped the tire several months ago and hasn't done anything to fix it.

Am I justified to ask him to pay for some or all of these things? I'm sure he won't want to but the rent that I'm getting from him ($375 per month, usually paid late) is barely even enough to fix all this stuff...

  • How long do I have to run the central AC in the winter to fry the compressor?

Its from the 80s and the homeowners insurance will buy a new one in the spring if this one can't be fixed... I'm tired of having it serviced every month... Will it kill the compressor if I turn it on in the winter by accident?

  • What is the best brand of outdoor faucet?

Like the kind you hook your garden hose up to. I heard the Kohler makes the best stuff but it doesn't really look like they make ones for outside the house. I am tired of dealing with crappy dripping faucets that are hard to turn off and want to get some really good that are easy to turn on and off and won't leak...

  • What is a good brand of air compressor?

I want to buy a small air compressor for my garage - what is a good brand of air compressor for home use?

  • Is there a law that realtors have to give you copies of what you sign?

I just bought a house and had a buyers agent who was doing all the paperwork. She never gave me copies of any of the stuff I signed and I complained to her in email that I had not got copies. Eventually she emailed me back with a copy of my offer to purchase but nothing else. Now I am getting screwed because of a water problem that was only partially disclosed and because they did work and never pulled permits. The seller is definitely at fault, but what about my realtor? I have proof in email records that she never provided me with a copy of the sellers disclosures or anything else...

  • Someone I know just got sentenced to 20 yrs in prison. Why do I feel depressed like it happened to me?

I know him, but I never really trusted him. The truth is he probably deserves what he got, but I feel really sad and nervous about it, like it's happening to me, or maybe it seems like he is being executed or something. Why am I bothered by this?

  • What happens when someone dies and there is no will and nobody hires a probate attorney?

My business partners dad died in Wisconsin and he had a small business and a house but they think his medical bills are going to be far more than his estate is worth so nobody is paying a lawyer, they are just taking all his tools and stuff and selling them and keeping the money and letting everything else sit and not planning to hire an attorney or pay the hospital or any creditors. What will happen? Will the state eventually take the house and sell it and do their own probate or what?

  • Will laminate floors in an upper unit increase the amount of noise the people living below hear?

I am buying a condo and it's an upper unit. If I replace the old carpets in there with laminate wood flooring will that make more noise to the people living below as opposed to carpet?

  • When buying a home is location or quality of the place more important?

I have a 2 yr old daughter who lives with me as well. I can get a 20yr old condo in a prime location where I want to live that is somewhat dated on the inside, or I can get a brand new condo that has a clubhouse with swimming pool, jacuzzi, tennis courts, etc. further out in the country but not really close to anything. They are both the same price. Which will I be happier in?

  • My biz partners dad died - how long before he should be functional at work again?

His dad died from lung cancer 3 1/2 weeks ago while they were on vacation with him. He was gone for 2 weeks before that for the vacation so I have been doing all the work for 6 weeks and can't handle much more.

He has been back at work for 3 weeks but isn't doing anything besides redecorating his office into a shrine to his dad and sifting through all his dads old checkbooks and stuff. I feel like I'm totally on my own running the company - he adds no value but I still have to pay him.

Am I right to confront him about it now or do I need to give him more time? He is pretty much non-functional in his job and the rest of us in the office can't carry him much longer. We are 50-50 partners.

  • Why are Indian people so difficult to deal with in a service business?

We provide computer repair services for a mid sized community and I cringe every time an Indian person comes in the door which isn't very often, but when we do serve Indian nationals 100% of the time after the work is done they make lengthy arguments for why they shouldn't have to pay us. We politely tell them that our prices are not negotiable and they go on and on and won't stop debating it for like an hour at which time they threaten to call the better business bureau, dispute the charges with the credit card company, not send us all of their friends who they then say they were going to send us if we didn't make them pay, etc...

We don't have this problem with anyone else. Is this a cultural difference or how can we stop this from occurring? We have everyone sign a written agreement that spells out very clearly what we charge and they sign it and then don't think they should have to follow it... We have even considered not accepting any more work from them since it's a major loss of productivity to have to debate someone for an hour over a $45 or $85 charge and it's even worse if we let them get away without paying.

  • Am I right to feel shafted after my girlfriend stuck me with the whole cost of a trip to Germany?

We never talked finances much but she was always poor mouthing like she was broke, so I tried to help her and paid the whole trip. She never offered to pay for anything and I felt pretty good about helping someone who was down and out.

Eventually I found out she's not broke at all and just has some kind of poverty complex even though she has no bills and her job pays big money- almost 3x what I make and she has over 100k in her checking account and also gets 25% of her ex-husbands lawyers salary on top of it. Her vehicle is free from her job, she has no credit card payments and her dad rents her a house for cheap.

I have been feeling cheated and broke up with her for it. I confronted her about it and she said she thought that guys just like to pay for everything and she would take me out to dinner and pay for that. I didn't take the dinner and broke up w/her instead. And I did it in txt message just to try to make her feel like she made me feel.

  • Girlfriend has been snooping through my private papers in my desk?

I took a short nap and when I woke up all the paperwork in my desk drawer was moved around and it looks like she was reading the private notes from my therapy. I am really hurt and offended and feel violated and things were already not going well with her. We've only been dating for 3 months. She has been acting strangely since then too which is to be expected because the notes were mostly about my failed marriage and ex-wife. Very private stuff.

Should I even mention this to her- I am sure she will just deny it and act offended if I say something but everything is all shuffled around in there now and my notes from therapy were dislodged from where they were.

  • Should I confront by girlfriend for being cheap or just break up with her?

We've been dating for only 3 months... She makes quite a bit more than I do but she is always poor mouthing that her ex-husband ripped her off in their divorce and she doesn't have enough saved for retirement (she's 47 right now and I'm 9 yrs younger than her). When we go places she offers to pay about 1/4 of the time and I always accept, but still I feel like I'm being taken advantage of. She's quite vocal in that she believes that women and men are equal, but still I end up footing the bill for 75% of the stuff we do and I'm not that well off where I am quite sure she is making six figures since she's a successful pharmaceutical sales rep.

We went to Germany last month for the Oktoberfest and I paid for the tickets, hotels, etc which I guess was fine since I was the one that invited her. I would have accepted if she'd offered to help out. I brought with me $1400 cash which was almost fully spent and she brought $1000 and didn't spend much of it (she didn't volunteer to pay for much). So the other night she mentions in conversation that she needs to go back to the back to deposit all her extra cash from the trip because "my boyfriend wouldn't let me pay for anything in Germany". When she didn't offer I ended up always paying, but it ticks me off that she is saying that I "wouldn't let her pay" since I always accepted her offers when she did offer. So I ended up paying for 95% based on her non-offering status... Should I just break up with her or how should I deal with this? I can't afford to pay for everything, she makes quite a bit more than I do and still expects that I am the one footing most of the entertainment bills.

We don't live together, we each have our own homes and our own expenses, and her expenses at home appear to be quite a bit less than mine too. Help!

  • My ex ripped my heart out yesterday and then txt me happy birthday today. Should I respond?

We have been seeing each other again for a few months and I told her that I still love her. She has been stringing me along for the past few weeks and yesterday told me she doesn't want to be in a relationship with me and that I should move on because she wants to sow her oats. She was emotional and crying when she left and seemed shocked that I don't still want to talk on the phone with her and stuff since I told her that now that I have closure I need to work on accepting the rejection and building a new life without her. Today is my birthday and she just sent me a text message that says "Happy birthday jason!".

Should I even respond to it and if so what should i say?
