I'm an engineering student at Carnegie Mellon University with a great deal of interest in international and American politics. I voted for Barack Obama in the NH primary.

  • A creation scientist is coming to my college...?

what are some questions I should ask him?

Creationists believe Adam, Eve, animals, and dinosaurs (all vegetarian including T-rex) were made 6,000 years ago and that evolution, the Big Bang, etc. are all evil ideas made up to attack Christians. Are there any science people out there (or theistic evolutionists) who have ideas for what I can ask?

  • Isn't it funny when someone sends you a message on YA...?

and they try to argue with your views but they can't spell simple words like "sense"? You would think they would put thought into writing something to another person.

  • Why doesn't the US stand for justice?

The United States is supporting the longtime dictator of Uzbekistan, Islom Karimov. After shaking hands with Bush and visiting Ground Zero, our government called him a key ally in the war on terror.

This is a man who has abandoned all freedoms, rigged elections for 18 years, and tortures thousands of political prisoners, yet we gave him $500 million in 2002 alone so we could use his country to attack Afghanistan.

The challenge is for a private group (one not funded by the government) to land a rover on the Moon and drive it 500 meters by 2012 for a cash prize of $20 million for the first team and $10 million for the second. Will universities and companies be able to put their mark on the moon?

  • Speaking of Iran, have you read their president's message to you?

    http://www.ahmadinejad.ir/en/message-to-the-americ...

    Message to the American People:

"Both our nations are God-fearing, truth-loving and justice-seeking, and both seek dignity, respect and perfection.

Both greatly value and readily embrace the promotion of human ideals such as compassion, empathy, respect for the rights of human beings, securing justice and equity, and defending the innocent and the weak against oppressors and bullies.

We are all inclined towards the good, and towards extending a helping hand to one another, particularly to those in need.

We all deplore injustice, the trampling of peoples' rights and the intimidation and humiliation of human beings.

We all detest darkness, deceit, lies and distortion, and seek and admire salvation, enlightenment, sincerity and honesty."

  • Why did a Saudi prince get a personal tour of Ground Zero?

There's been a great deal of outrage because Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wants to lay a wreath at Ground Zero when he visited. Former NYC mayor Giuliani was outraged, calling it a photo-op and a disgrace to those lost because of Iran's ties to Islamic terrorism and oppression.

Why, then, did Giuliani give a Saudi prince a personal tour of Ground Zero in October 2001?

  • Does anyone remember...?

how four years ago everyone thought Howard Dean was a shoe-in for the next president? So don't jump to conclusions about the current race, yet. The primaries are still months away, and those will determine the election.

  • What will it take to get people to be less apathetic?

There's so much political apathy I see around me at college and with other people; students don't have the knowledge to comprehend basic current events or international problems. I ran a UN club and had to explain to high school students why Israel mattered to some people, etc. What would motivate people to end this trend?

  • What operating system should I get in a new college laptop?

I'm going to get a new laptop for college and my parents have made clear it has to be Windows, but my dad and I want to special-order XP, but my mom pointed out other freshmen will buy laptops off the shelf (with Vista).

I was against a Vista laptop because I was worried it would be too slow or include Office 2007 (which I haven't used yet), but if I want to keep my laptop throughout college... Vista will be the Windows standard.

  • Will the American economy survive outsourcing?

I'm a high school senior planning for college - architecture or engineering of some type.

I've read some economics books (like The World is Flat) and realized many engineering jobs are getting outsourced to China and India.

This worries me - will the American economy still be successful in 10 years? Will it be possible for Americans to study advanced fields in technology and engineering, and still compete with the sweatshop and low-paying megamanufacturers overseas?

  • Why is so much TV total garbage?

Seriously, if you look at most television shows these days, it's a total failure to entertain, inspire, or encapture the viewer. I'm no religious extremist, but the profanity and sexuality on TV is appalling, and making the real world worse.

I've heard Lost and 24 are good - any ideas on how to beat the common garbage and find something actually worth watching?

  • Is it possible to start a charity / community service organization without being a millionaire?

I mean I see Bono is the spokesman for The One campaign, is it possible for one person without the big bucks to start, for example, a community outreach program that would get enough media attention for funds? Or does every organization start with a multimillionaire?
