  • What can I do about jealous dog?

I have 2 small altered, male dogs, a Maltese and a Boston Terrier. Both are both very sweet, well-behaved dogs - considered individually. But the Maltese is jealous and mean to the Boston! If I am holding M and BT comes near, like just to investigate or be petted, M will growl, bare his teeth and even has been known to jump down onto BT (who is larger). BT may not eat until M examines his food and permits it. Tonight M was in a particularly hateful attitude and was forbidding BT to eat. M circled BT repeatedly. Then he would strut away a distance, turn and look back and strut back and circle. When I removed M from the room, BT was still too nervous to eat until M returned. On his return M went over to BT and signaled permission to eat.

I love them both, but can't stand this behavior. If it were children I would know what to do, but I don't think empathy can be taught to dogs.

  • How do you adjust a knitting pattern to use worsted weight yarn that calls for baby yarn?

I found a baby hat pattern that I want to knit, but it calls for baby or sports weight yarn and I want to use worsted weight yarn. Does anyone know a formula for changing needle sizes & number of stitches to make this work?

  • Can feeding only canned dog food be healthful?

I have struggled to find a dry dog food that my silky terrier/maltese will eat. He will eat meaty chunks style cans, but I thought he needed dry food for his teeth. I have starved him to dry and other methods and have him eating 1/2 can plus 1/2 cup of dry now, but is gaining more weight that I think is desirable. When he ate canned only, his weight stayed stable at a muscular, but trim, level. Would it be okay to just give him 1 can a day of something like Alpo Chunky varieties and quit worrying?

  • What kind of harness will my dog not chew through?

My small (14 lb) dog likes to wear "clothes", bandannas, sweaters, harnesses, and will wear a bandanna for a week at a time between baths without bothering it at all. But although he likes to put on and wear a harness, and will fight me when I try to remove it, he will twist around until he has it in his mouth and chew through it quickly. I know that I could limit his wear to when we are going somewhere, but would really like for him to wear a harness all day and only remove it at bedtime. Does anyone know of a dog harness made of a material that he can't chew through - OR COULD IT BE THAT I am not adjusting it properly? Am I leaving it too loose around his neck, or making it uncomfortable somewhere?

  • Do you have the old pattern for a crochet spiral clown baby mobile?

I think it was originally put out by a yarn company as a free flyer in the '60s.

  • Can I make my Amaryllis bloom?

I know the standard treatment of an amaryllis bulb is to remove it from the soil when the leaves begin to yellow, store the bulb for 6 wks. then replant BUT......

I set my plant on my porch for the summer and it never died down or yellowed. Here it is time to replant and mine is still growing! What can I do now? If I leave it in the pot but cut the foliage back, will it sent up a blossom shoot?

  • Help with dry food my dog will eat.?

My Silkese (hybrid Silky Terrier/Maltese) puppy is now 10 mo. old. When I first got him he ate Diamond Small Breed Puppy Food (dry). That is what we kept him on through 2 bags of food. Then on the 3rd bag he refused it. After his not eating for 2 days, I bought some Science Diet Puppy. He refused that - wouldn't even taste it. Next I tried a variety of things from the pet store including the one that comes in a roll like sausage. Finally in desperation I got some canned Pedigree. While I prefer dry food for various reasons, I started giving him that. He ate it for about a month. Now he refuses it. He will pick out some kinds of pieces from Benneful but leaves the really hard ones.

Can anyone suggest a dry food that has a super-appealing smell and taste and not too hard a texture?

  • Will my neutered dog quit humping?

My dog is 9 mo. old and was neutered at 6 mo. Recently he started trying to hump my arm. I didn't think castrated dogs did that. Will he eventually stop? How do I get him to quit this disgusting practice?

  • Are steam hard floor cleaners worth having?

I would like to hear from some people who own Shark floor steam cleaners and Hoover Floor Machine steamers and any other brand. Do you like it? Is it worth the money? Is it easier and more effective than sweeping and mopping your floor. Any other information that you would like to share.

  • How long will a puppy cry at night?

I haven't raised a puppy in a long time and have forgotten. I am putting my 12 wk. old new puppy in a crate at night, and he is crying - okay, howling and screaming. I want him to learn to sleep in his own bed and not roam the house, but I have forgotten how many nights we will have to endure this unhappiness before he gets used to it.

  • Why can't I lose weight?

I have long been eating low fat. I don't actually count calories, but eat only small portions of whole grains, fruits & veg. and sm. portions of meat. About 6 weeks ago I began restricting my sugar to 5 tsp./day. Nothing happened. Three weeks ago I began walking. I am up to 30 min. each morning - up and down hills. At first I dropped 3 lbs. Now I am back up to where I started. What am I doing wrong.

  • Why does my cat "talk" to his prey?

He doesn't vocalize often except when he is playing with a rabbit-fur covered toy mouse. Then he carries it around and has a conversation at the same time using a variety of sounds and syllables. Also he will pounce on it, smack it around, toss it, and chase it while vocalizing. If it gets under a piece of furniture to where he can not get it, he will meow at it loudly complaining.
