  • Most people driving 5 to 10 miles per hours less than the speed limit?

I've noticed in the last 2 or 3 months most people have been driving much slower than the speed limit. They are even passing each other, one going 63 miles an hour and the other doing 65 (in a 70)...and there are plenty going even slower. Has anyone else noticed this, or is this just some local phenomenon? Is there something new in the water or the air? I would love to figure out what is really going on here...and if you haven't seen this same thing, no, there is nothing wrong with my speedometer. It's been like living in an episode of the X-files.

  • Engineering degree...diverse...2 year...what options are there?

I just got a deal that no one can pass up, but not sure where to start fulfilling my end of the bargain. Here is my deal: I am 38 and have been working as a process engineer for a couple of years (process technician for several before that). For all intents and purposes I have never been to college; and therefor I don't technically even hold the title of Engineer. It is my natural job and the company I work for has promoted me with one stipulation. The stipulation is I will work globally doing what I do now (not with the title I hold from the promotion) and I have 2 years to get at least an associate's degree with a focus on diverse engineering fields such as chemical, electrical and mechanical. School will be accommodated and paid for, not to mention I love what I do, so there is no way I could turn this down. While there are a few people I can seek some advice from, I am turning to the great Yahoo Answers looking for advice as well. I would like to know some names of degrees, names of schools in Texas that offer those degrees, and anything else that might steer me in the right direction.

  • Oil leaking in the gulf kills most of the top feeders; good for marine life?

Quite a lot of the bottom feeders are eating well on the dead carcasses such as dolphin. It seems to me there is an evolutionary change that might take place in the ecosystem of the gulf. With food so abundant, can this not spawn a huge increase in the populations of bottom feeders such as shrimp, clam, and oysters? Seems like that would be good for industries like shrimping in the longer term.

  • Not lazy? Then help me with this argument.?

I am putting together an argument to point out a simple solution to the sad state of current affairs, and need your help. What I am shooting for is to make the point using as few peripheral statements and/or analogies as possible, while still driving it home to most anyone that takes a few minutes to think about it. If you don't get the point, disagree with the point, or have something to add that I am missing, please do answer. Here it is in raw form...

Here is a hypothetical situation that can be related to real life:

There is a manufacturing plant just sitting there ready to run, but there are no people to run it. Among several other processes, it is set up to mine natural resources, generate power from those resources, grow crops, build shelters, i pods, televisions, and even provide childcare and Big Macs. The funding for building the plant came from banks which are waiting for the return on investment, but nothing happens. On the other side of the country there is a large group of people who are barely getting by on food stamps and other sorts of welfare. Many of these poor people are living in conditions you could hardly imagine. Of course, they are each individually living in these conditions off of 10 people in the working world that have things okay, if not well. The people working are resentful of the people living off of them; while those living off of them are resentful in return because they want what the others have. This seems to be a paradox. Is this our paradoxical paradise?

A great teacher once said something like, ‘if you give a man a fish, he will eat well for a day; if you teach a man to fish, he will eat well for a lifetime’. There is a simple lesson there that seems to apply to the problems faced in the hypothetical situation. It is pretty simple, even if the powers that be want to make it seem like it isn’t. A question must be asked at this point, “If it is really this simple, why haven’t the problems in this world been fixed?”.

Here are some keys to keeping a civilization healthy:

    • Banks must loan money to entrepreneurs.

    • Entrepreneurs must be encouraged to take a chance.

    • Technical/basic skills training should be offered in school to those more suited for it than administrative work. More options must be available to the youth in school (if you enjoy doing it, it is likely your calling).

    • Nature works on the principle of “survival of the fittest”; if nature was wrong, we wouldn’t be here. We are a product of nature. It is only when we think we know better when we get it wrong.

    • You can’t make something out of nothing.

  • How much would installing a window in a brick home cost?

I am about to purchase a nice 3 bedroom home (first home)...but one of those bedrooms actually can't be considered one because it only has some interesting tall rectangular windows in it (they are about be about 8 inches by 4 feet tall, don't open). What I am trying to come up with is how much to ask in allowance from the seller, as I am afraid of what kind of work would be done if I was to ask them to have it done. I have looked everywhere online and can't come up with anything. Please help. Thanks!

  • My wife puts her family before us...what can I do?

I met my wife 2 years ago; we are newly wed. It seems like she puts her family before us. When I met her I was taken by her smile first, and then by her beautiful heart the way she tries to take care of her family. She always would do whatever to make sure they were okay. You have to realize they are very poor. Just coming up with something to eat is a challenge. At times they would go without food or get lucky and hunt some wild animal for something to eat. It wasn't but about 6 months into our relationship when I felt I like offering to help. I helped because I could, as I have it pretty well. And I continued to do so. I found myself putting her and her family before myself to try to make things better for them. I don't know if you know the feeling of knowing you would give your life for someone, but that is the way I feel. Now we are married and I want to make a life for ourselves, but as the rule of what is mine is yours and yours mine goes, there is nothing much left for her and me. I am concerned we will run into a financial crisis such as a medical issue or something similar and not have a way out. I have had the talk with my wife about it in times past and recently; she just tries to reassure me that everything will be fine by taking on more work. She does housekeeping, so it is possible for her to earn more by taking on more houses. Of course all of this has been talk about in more depth than I am going into here, but I don't seem to be able to get though. The only thing I can think of doing is giving the ultimatum, she either changes her priorities or we need to have some time fully apart. What the heck else can I say to make her understand? Tell me if you think I see things wrong. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to see anyone in her family starve to death or come to any harm. Is this just the bed I made and now have to sleep in it? Asking for help in a moment of a loss for perspective. Thanks.

  • Are there any truly non-biased news organizations any more?

Although I am not sure there ever really were many in the past, but I like to think so. Everywhere I look these days it seems every media outlet is biased. There is no place that gives the news without enough spin on it to make your head come right off...There are some individuals reporting on the news who, at times and at least to the best of my scrutiny, report the strait story as it really is...this I only find when the BS from the voices of the two major parties is put forth in.

I am sick of hearing half truth this and totally biased that...is there any news media outlet speaking about what is really behind all of the BS we are seeing unfold? For example, when documented facts are used to look at the current events and not someone's ideals...that is where the information and what I call news is...and if you can tell me where is is, then that is a total bonus.

  • Isn't it true the average person is most creative and productive up to 35 years of age?

Well, I think that might be stretching it a little...they might have a few more useful years in them. Even though it would be a bit morbid, wouldn't it make sense to limit the years a person lives so that we as a society would be better off for it? Once parents have raised their children, and those children are out in the world making things happen for society, wouldn't it be great if we could just make the old people not-exist? Or/and, if we could just do away with people who are no longer or ever were benefiting society; wouldn't that be awesome? All people with learning disabilities, handicaps, laze in their brains, sexually confused, and just plain worn out would no longer burden us.

It might be better if we could screen people for negative traits before they were born...or even better, we could alter the genes of the not-yet-born so they were free of at least the handicaps and obvious defects.

We could do all of this if we were to stand up and get control of the healthcare industry (I am not saying the changes should be implemented immediately, but rather after the majority of respectable people are pointed in the direction of this great thinking). Think of the Utopian society we could have for ourselves. I don't know about you, but if I found myself inferior tomorrow, I would quickly take my life for the betterment of everyone else. I don't want anyone to be directing most of their efforts toward keeping me around. It comes down to the fact that we all need to learn about sacrifice for the greater good.

I think I am on to something here and you can't make a logical argument against it...I would like to hear someone provide a better answer for the betterment of the human race that doesn't come from your bleeding heart, but from logic.

Don't get me wrong here...I am not saying there shouldn't be differences between people...as long as the different people thought like I do and were a benefit to society.

    Peace.

  • I need help setting my budget?

    Here is the case:

I make 17,000 dollars a year now (just got out of college with a degree in liberal arts), but want to live like I make 55,000. I get a whole heck of a lot of credit card offers, so I am sure they can play into this. One more thing too; I qualified for a 250,000 dollar home loan. The reason I think everything will work out is I hear that after 3 years with the company I will be making 65,000 dollars a year when the current manager retires and I take his spot...I just want to figure out a budget so I can live now like I will likely be able to in a few years. Do you know how I can pull this off or know someone who can? Surely in the plan there will be some credit cards being used to pay off other credit cards, but I don't know the specifics.

One of the thoughts behind making this plan is I have this feeling I will be better off buying things with today's money, even considering semi high interests rates (because we all know our dollar will not be worth what it does today when tomorrow comes along).

  • I have been thinking about getting fired from my job so I can get some benefits...is this wrong?

Here my situation is: I have been working 8 hours a day for the last 2 years since quitting school. I am still making 7 dollars an hour, by the way. I see a lot of my friends living off of unemployment and food stamps, which I think kind of sucks. But, they are just hanging out and playing video games while I have been working. I feel like the place I am working doesn't care about me and my job is not fun (I have to skin the chickens before they get cut into their parts). When I have time to hang out with my friends and we begin to talk about how I keep getting overlooked for a promotion (having done this same job for the last 2 years), they encourage me by telling me that I will be the first to get laid off when the time comes. And now I am thinking that I could like, slow down some more on purpose, and get in on the job cuts that the rumor has it, as taking place soon. Am I wrong thinking this? What would you do if you could live as good as you do now and not have to work? Seems like winning the lottery to me.

  • I think I have figured out why Obama can't show a birth certificate...Am I on to something?

Tell me if I might be on the right track...

Obama can't show his birth certificate because he is of the perfect immaculate birth...not born of man...he is the reincarnation of Buddha, Muhammad, and Jesus Christ. This explains it all doesn't it?

This theory explains the issue with the birth certificate, but I am sure it explains a whole lot more of what he is doing. Maybe you can help me draw the lines between this theory and his actions. If we all put our minds to it, we might be able to see with eyes opened by the truth and know when our judgment day is coming. Then when we can begin to repent for our sins and follow the true one.

  • What should I do? Two cats to choose from...?

    Here are the two cats:

    1. Cat is sweet and loving...almost too loving...can hang out by herself or in my lap for hours at a time, almost reading my mood and can tell when I have time for her and when I don't...she likes to give the cold wet nose rub constantly...licking is okay, understood and appreciated, but wet nose rub is going too far...I think the cat is trying to wipe its buggers on me...from the eye buggers to the sloppy cold wet nose...I get creeped out...but this cat also likes to poop and pee on the carpet...

    2. Cat lives in the bathroom with food, litter box, some toys and a few other cat things...it is my one bathroom and it seems to get crowded in there. Cat cries all of the time unless I am holding it (that takes place outside of the bathroom)...I have to mop the floor often because of the "mistakes" made on the floor...lucky it is just a little pee every few days...but she really likes to play in it...stomping around in it and smearing it everywhere...as well...when I use the bathroom the cat is constantly crying...there is no such thing as peace in there...when I am working on things in the neighboring room the crying coming from there is simply piercing...I feel like taking a couple of pencils and shoving them into my ears as far as they will go in in hopes of stopping the feeling that resembles a very dull rusty drill poking holes in my forehead at random.

I guess there is a 3rd one too:

This cat cost over 500 dollars only a couple of months ago...Cat is really cute and quite pretty sitting on the fireplace mantle...super soft silvery fur and shiny glazed eyes...really quiet and easy to take care of...

There seems to be too little of me to go around. I have to choose just one...please help me decide.

  • Have hope, but tried lots and still find no good way to get my love from the Philippines here (complicated)?

Here is the story, sorry if I ramble on a bit...I fell in love with a transsexual girl in the Philippines...don't remember when or how it happened, but we've been together for a year and a half...my love for her is everything...I would die for her...she has a beautiful heart and soul...and a smile that could likely bring world peace...Since I was out there I have been trying to get her here to the States, in order to marry her in one of the states which would allow it...and then I would bring the fight to Washington in order to be able to have the marriage recognized by the Federal Government....I was trying to do this by starting off with a student visa...Worked with several lawyers, including Mr. Carl Shusterman (who is likely the immigration law authority). I am not sure if I could have gotten more out of the consultation with him or not, but once he started rattling off bad news...on the day after I found my cat of 7 years lying in the road after getting hit by a car...I froze up. Now I am here and asking if anyone knows how to get a visa for someone in the Philippines that is relatively poor. I am willing to do whatever it takes. I need to have her heart here beating next to mine. Before I go and move to another country, does anyone know of any way to just get her into the US legally? Maybe in a 100 years it will be possible to just get a fiance visa...but I am willing to pave the way...I'll do whatever it takes. Any positive thoughts about this?

  • Barack Obama and family playing out in pop culture, sick of it?

It seems like everywhere I turn; on the radio, in the paper, on TV, and in conversation, people are talking about the Obama family like movie stars...and I hate that so many people are so stuck on the trivialities of the trivial lives of celebrities...but at the same time give heed to those people's politically charged voice...especially since most all celebrities are less than average people with a skewed sense of what the average person's reality is. This is all the same, but a bit inverted. Has the backbone of our country (the people) gone so soft they are now only interested in what brand of shoes the Obamas wear, so they too can be so hip? What happened to being concerned about the character of the people running the government and how their decisions will impact the future of our country? Is this done so when we all loose our freedoms and liberty, we won't even notice it? Come the heck on! Barack Obama is a brilliant man and some of his politics are a bit far off on the left side of things. For instance; if few people are thinking about what it means for the government to control the banks, but instead are watching his children grow up in a protected and privileged world, then we are doomed to a fate in this country of being slaves to the all powerful and controlling government. And we will like it because that is what we were told was best for us.

No matter what else I write in here it will come off to some as far right BS, but my question for everyone is; do you also see what I am talking about as far as our mindless pop culture is concerned? I just want to find out if it is time to head for the hills or not:)

  • Why is this LGBT...and not for instance, TGLB?

I seem to have a problem with how things are organized in this categorization. Is lesbianism more acceptable to "normal" society than gay, bisexual, and transsexualism? And is that why we should allow ourselves categorized like this? What is this all really about? Is this the order in which we are a "danger" to society? What is it we are accepting here?

If the answers get interesting, I'll have to add some details.

  • Going to send a Christmas gift to the Philippines, bit afraid customs is going to be a gift killer...?

I bought the gift a while ago...just some jewelry...want to send it, but I am afraid of the tax that is going to be imposed on it...checked online and can't find information on what it will be...my experience with sending something overseas tells me it will cost a bunch (sent some bass guitar strings to Hungary...they had to pay 40 dollars for the customs duty...and that was just a few sets of guitar strings...pretty crazy if you ask me)...

If you have experience with this, please let me know what the best way to go about sending this gift is...and what can be expected from customs once it gets there...(links cool too)...

    Thanks!
