  • I want to start researching my family tree, where do I begin?

I don't even know where to start. I tried going on ancestry.com one day, but I do not feel I should have to pay to get this information. I really only know the names as far back as my great-grandparents, but that's it. Where do I start? How do I document the info? What info do I need to document? Also, one of my grandmother's is unsure who her real father is. Both her mother and father have passed so there is no way of knowing for sure. How do I figure that into my family tree?

    Thank you!!!

  • Inadvertently committed fraud on a car loan application?

A few weeks ago we got a letter in the mail from the dealership we purchased our vehicle from wanting us to trade it in or buy it back. We went in to check it out, and considered trading in our vehicle. He ran a credit check on us, and asked about our income. I figured the income in my head, and he asked if it was before taxes, and I said yes. So, he tacked another $1000 onto the total I gave him too account for taxes. The guy was pretty rude and shady, so after we left we went directly to another dealership.

We liked this company much better, and we went through the whole thing again and they asked about our income. We told him $3000 and they just assumed it did not include tax, so they tacked on another $1000 to account for taxes. We had to come back in a few days later, and again someone asked us about our income. At this point I was confused after all the numbers that had been thrown around the previous few days, and I said I think it was $4000 or so - and the sales guy immediately ran off (it happened so fast - you know how quick they are to get someone financed). So, they tacked on $1000 AGAIN to account for taxes. So they financed us with a $5000 income instead of $3000. My husband and I signed all the paperwork. Then they asked us to bring in proof of income after the weekend (it was a Friday). We came back an hour later to pick up our car, and the finance guy said he made a mistake. He asked us for our paperwork back and tore it up. He apologized and said he was thinking about something else when he typed everything up, and when he gave us new paperwork to sign, our APR went up 3% points!!! I wanted to cuss him out and leave right there, but we didn't so that's our problem, I guess.

Anyway, we went home that afternoon and I dug out all the paperwork to bring in. After adding everything up I realized the mistake. We tried to take the car back the following business day (we said we didn't have a good feeling about the purchase), but they said we were just suffering from buyers remorse and because we already signed the registration papers they had no way of cancelling the contract. Now they said we have to bring our income information TODAY. Even thought we technically lied on the contract it was not intentional. Is there anything we can do??? Trust me, I wanted to change the numbers on our pay stubs so bad, but that's just not right. BTW, we live in NC if that helps. Thanks in advance

  • I found what looked like a clear baby eel at the beach?

Unfortunately, I did not have a phone or a camera with me to take a picture, but the creature had the EXACT shape of an eel, only it was about an inch or two long and completely see through. I did not see any internal organs, but I could see it's eyes which were black. Was this thing an eel? If so, what kind could it be? I found it just 2 days ago washed up on a sea shell at the beach. It was barely moving, so I put it back in the water hoping it would survive. I found it off the southeast coast of NC.

I LOVE finding things like this at the beach, and I would appreciate knowing for future reference what it is. Thanks so much for your help :)

  • How do I know the college I will be going to is a good school?

I will be attending Miller-Motte College in just under a month. I really don't know how to go about finding out how good the school is. I know they are accredited, as I have looked on the accreditation website. BUT, does that really mean much? What else do I need to know about the college? Do my teachers have to have any type of specific qualifications as well? I really don't know how to go about this to make sure I am making an informed decision - any ideas would be AWESOME! Thanks so much for your time!

P.S. I will be taking the medical assisting associates degree program, and I live in NC.

  • My ferret is driving me NUTS!!!!?

We recently acquired 2 ferrets from a family who found out could not have pets in their rented home. One is a sweet little angel. The other is a terror! He bites people HARD, will not use a litter box, and lately he's been scratching in the bottom of his cage at all hours of the night no matter what we do. I have tried just telling him no, picking him up out of his cage and transferring him to the top (which, as soon as he is back in will run right back down to the bottom and start over), and recently I have employed a squirt bottle - all to no avail. I don't know what else to do, and am about to launch him in a tiny ferret catapult (just kidding!) Seriously though, what else can I do?

  • Computer issues: "the web address you entered could not be found"?

AAAAAHHHH! Okay, I am having this issue with my computer where when I go to some websites I usually frequent without issues, I get this error message instead of being taken to the website. Now that I think about it, sometimes when I am on a site that suggests a link and I click on it, sometimes I will get the error message as well. I don't know what to do. I have made sure that I am typing the full, correct web address and I am still having the problem. I have also added the sites to my trusted sites as well. I am currently using windows 7 and IE8. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  • How do I care for and plant orchid tubers?

My mother-in-law gave me 2 orchid tubers from her garden over the weekend (in Virginia Beach - I'm in eastern NC). She did not give me any info on the species, or growing conditions for the orchid and I cannot get a hold of her to ask. The only thing she mentioned was that they will flower in the fall. I would like to put them in a pot together indooors, and keep them in front of my sunny sliding glass door if possible. Does anyone have any idea on the species, and how I will need to care for the tubers(they still have some soil on them, too), and when to plant them? I would appreciate any advice anyone can offer!

P.S. I'm also posting another question about 3 amaryllis bulbs she gave me if you could offer any info on that, too :)

    THANK YOU!!!

  • How do I remove the hard drive from my Dell Inspiron B110 desktop?

I am going to donate my computer, but I would like to remove the hard drive first so I am not just giving away all my personal info. I have taken off the side panel, but there are several boxes inside, and I do not want to take out the wrong piece of hardware. On the top left when looking inside, there are 2 boxes and each contain a fan. The box on top is big and silver, the box below that is even bigger and green. Then there are 2 boxes to the right. The one on the top right appears to be the CD drive, since it is directly behind where you would put in a cd, and it appears to be sitting in a slot or shelf. The one on the bottom right is in a spot directly behind where the USB ports are, and has a metal cage around it. I am assuming this is the hard drive? But you know what happens when you assume, so I am asking for help before proceeding :) I am sorry, I know it will be hard knowing what I am talking about just by describing it to you. But I want my hard drive in my hand before I give it to someone else. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer, and Merry Christmas :)

  • What would be a good "American" Christmas present to give to someone from Uganda?

My husband is currently deployed in Iraq, and recently he has become really good friends with a soldier from Uganda who is also currently stationed on the same base. This gentleman has never been to the US, but would like to visit someday. He is single, quite young, and is between the ages of 18-24. I really am not sure what his interests are, but since he and my husband have become good friends, I think it would be a nice gesture to send him a Christmas gift. I would prefer it be something "american", as he has never been here. I have been to MANY stores, and cannot come up with anything. I have to send my husband's package in a few days, so I need to be able to get something soon. We live in NC near the beach, and my only idea I can come up with is to make him a shadow box with different shells and fossils from the beach here. I'm telling you, I really have NO idea! I am hoping someone out there can offer a suggestion. Thanks so much :)

  • Anyone have any pumpkin-containing recipes I can send to Iraq?

I want to bake something for my hubby for Thanksgiving, something that will remind him of home and the holiday, since I can't just ship a pumpkin pie to him. All I can think of is either pumpkin bread or pumpkin cookies. Are there any "tried and true" recipes anyone would be willing to share? Thanks so much!

P.S. It takes about 1 and 1/2 weeks for packages to get there.

  • Can someone please answer a few questions about recovering my computer?

Hi, I have been having issues with my Dell desktop for some time, and then to top it all off recently I got hundreds of trojans, adware, and malware due to a virus I got while on Facebook. A friend of my mother's who knows computers came by to look at my computer. He said there is still a virus on it so my computer will need to be wiped out and recovered. He left saying he was going to come back to do all this. We paid him $40 up front, to this day we have not heard back from him and he won't return my calls. SO, after calling Dell, they told me how I can recover my computer myself. Now, I have never done anything like this before. 1: Is it easy to do? I have already saved everything I need off of my computer so I have nothing to lose. But, when I went to Best Buy the other day, I was told if I do actually have a virus that my picture and document files might also be corrupted. This could be potentially devastating to me because ALL of my children's pictures were on there! I have learned the hard way and now have everything saved on 2 separate flash drives (in case 1 breaks). 2: If my picture or document files ARE corrupted, how do I find out myself? 3: Can they be fixed if they are corrupted? I was also told at Best Buy that recovering my computer might not get rid of the virus (don't know if that's true or not). I have been waiting to get this fixed so I can hook up my webcam and chat with my husband who is in Iraq, but I don't want to install anything else unless this problem is fixed. I would appreciate so much if someone has any info they can share.

  • How do I rip DVDs onto my external hard drive (a couple of questions, please)?

Maybe I'm making this way more complicated than it should be, but I wanted to rip all of my dvds onto a hard drive I just purchased and send it to my husband who is deployed. I was told I needed to download the following software (which I did): CloneDVD, PowerISO, FLV Player, ImgBurn, and DVD Shrink. I was also told I wouldn't have to do anything once I installed the programs, and that whenever I put in a dvd the programs needed would automatically open and run. So I did all that, installed the external hard drive (which is a WD My Book Essential Edition 2.0, 750 GB). There is no manual that came with the XHD, all it said was that it will install itself and be ready for use. I have never done anything like this before. I put a dvd into my disk drive and all the computer's doing is bringing up windows media player like I want to watch the dvd. How can I rip all of my dvds onto the XHD? I think I have a little over 100 dvds total.

Also is there a way I can separate all the movies into categories such as comedy, horror, etc. or will they all just be mixed up together?

Is there a way to condense each movie so that I can fit more onto the XHD without sacrificing quality?

Any other pertinent info would be greatly appreciated also.

    Thanks so much.

  • Any ideas on games my husband and I can play while we're apart?

My husband does not have a computer yet. I wanted to buy 2 board games or something that we can play while we are on the phone with each other every night. I would send him 1 game, and I would keep the other one. Then, when we have the opportunity to talk we can play the game for a while. The only problem is, I can't think of a game that would work. I thought Scrabble, but then we would basically have to tell each other all the letters we have. Does anyone have any ideas?

  • In the market for buying a good digital camera for taking pics of small, detailed pieces - any suggestions?

Hi, I am looking to buy a new digital camera. I will be taking alot of pictures of handmade jewelry, fossils, and shark teeth, but at the same time I will be using it for the family. Mainly because I don't have the money to buy 2 separate cameras. Also, it would be great if the camera was waterproof - you know how kids can be! Any help would be appreciated!!

  • Is there a photo printing site that develops nude photos?

My husband and I took some *explicit* photos together before he left for Iraq. I accidentally loaded them onto our computer with the rest of my photos, and now the only way to print them is to send them to a site and have them mailed. (My printer is really crappy). Is there any site that might print these?

  • Questions about traveling/vacationing in Ireland?

My husband and I have decided we are going to vacation in Ireland. Are there places you recommend we see/visit? Where are some good places to stay? Did you buy a vacation package or tour the country on your own? Any other advice you can give? Thanks!

  • Would the Montgomery GI Bill pay for this?

I have been told starting in August of this year, Army spouses can start using the GI Bill. I want to start taking online classes from GIA. This is the only place I know of that offers these kinds of classes for a gemologist, diamontologist, etc. (except for in CA and NY, which is 12 hours away). The courses are mostly online, but for most courses you are required to go to various sites for lab classes. Can I collect benefits for doing something like this?

  • Need some help from someone who likes writing for children (books) please?

Ok, this is kind of complicated so please bear with me. My husband just left for Iraq. I was trying to think of a way to help my youngest child (she's 4) cope with him being gone for 13 months. I came up with the idea that I would gather pictures I've taken with the 2 of them together doing different things, and put them into a photo album and come up with a story to go along with the pictures. I have a variety of pictures(there are about 30), such as her counting his fingers when she was a baby, him tickling her, them playing pat-a-cake, them making breakfast and lunch together, them hugging, her giving him a kiss, and I took a picture before he left of the 2 of them in bed pretending they were sleeping. My idea was to put the pictures in order and make the story go as if they had a big adventure one day and did all these things together. The problem is, the both of them have different clothes and haircuts in the various pictures, and my daughter is noticeably younger in some of them. It is obvious all these pictures were not taken in the same day. Now I feel like the idea isn't going to work. Also, I want it to be a story, not just pictures with captions. And I would like the wording to be fairly simple yet fun so my daughter can read it once she starts learning to read. Does anyone have any suggestions?

FYI: this is my second post of this question, but in a different category. Not sure where it was best to post this!
