"Eye for an eye - tooth for a tooth" mostly featured as a negative aspect. What is the positive discussion?
The discussion in the Talmud on this matter of "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth" results in the demonstration that revenge is NEVER justified. What is the essence of this discussion?
(By the way, the discussion is very factual, almost scientific!)
14 AnswersReligion & Spirituality2 decades agoWhat was Onan's real reason that he avoided to have a child with Tamara, his brother's widow?
"If a man's brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and have children for his brother."
What is the point behind this law?
8 AnswersReligion & Spirituality2 decades agoIf the saying is true:"Every country has the government the people deserve!" - Is that true of yours?
Please also explain if you are prepared to do something to change your government - even if it is a very small and local thing. Or have you decided to do nothing - besides speaking or writing about it?
12 AnswersCivic Participation2 decades agoWhere does the expression "that's OK" come from and what did it originally mean?
I work nowadays as a "degustateur". I offer people to have a taste of a new dish - or an ancient recipe. Some of those who refuse to taste it say, "That's OK!" and move away. I then grin inside of myself and silently ask, "Do you know what you have just said?"
3 AnswersWords & Wordplay2 decades agoWhere does the term "break a bone" come from and what does it really mean?
Surely, when someone is going to give the performance of their life you wish them all the success in the world? You don't want them to break a bone - nor to break their neck! So what does this term really mean and where does it derive from?
I'm so curious about if anybody finds that out! Please remember to add the link. Thank you!

3 AnswersHistory2 decades agoTo develope your personality and support your country, would you consider doing a National Service?
The military is a form of National Service. However, I also consider a civil service; the U.S. Peace Corps, the German "Zivildient" as ambulance drivers and paramedics, and any other Service where you oblige yourself to serve your country for a given period of time and also agree to the required disciplin to optimalize your capabilities in carrying out your duties.
Another possibility is that you voluntier to do charity or other community services diligently for a period of at least a year (ca. 20hrs/week) - although this could be done in installments, e.g., as a student, you would oblige yourself for 4x 3 months vacation.
Do you see the life's experiances gained by such an endeavor, the developement and strengthening of your character and integrity? Do you realize how this would look like on your resume and the better chances for employment to jump-start your career?
Do you see how it would strengthen the ecconomy, the social structure, above all, the good name of your country?
3 AnswersCommunity Service2 decades agoWhy does "You're yellow!" should mean you are a coward?
I suppose this has nothing to do with rasism, i.e., skin colour, and it may be somehow connected with the Yellow Flag, meaning quarantine, e.g., infectious sickness on board ship or in this house - challanging a person to enter anyway. I'd be most thankfull for the scorce of this information, too, as it seems to be an expression used in USA only. Thanks for all your efforts.
