  • [mac] No | symbol in Terminal?

When I type the | key in Terminal, the ø symbol will appear instead. I can type | in any other program though... Any suggestions?

I tried switching between US and US Extended keyboard layouts, but they both have the same effect. I think it must be some kind of setting in Terminal itself, but I cannot seem to find it...

  • Yucca plant dying, help?

We have been given a Yucca plant under our care for three weeks. The owner said it's a really easy plant to take care of, it'll survive everything, it just needs a lot of sunlight. It's not even necessary to water it, we just have to spray it every 3 days with some special liquid he gave us.

After a couple of days, we took the weekend off and I made the mistake to switch off the heater in our apartment: it's freezing out where we live and temperatures in the apartment might have been just above the freezing point I suspect :/

When returning, I probably made the second mistake: I saw the plant and I thought "oh no, she's been here in the cold al along" and I put her on the heater, putting the heater on maximum. Later on I read that plants in general don't tend to like temperature changes…

Now it's one week later and we've sprayed her always on time, keeping her by the window and on the heater (it's a tropical plant so I figured she'd be more comfortable when warm). But the leaves are turning yellow and hard one by one… Now the majority already look dead.

There's another thing I'm worried about: the low temperatures outside make the humidity very low, and since tropical areas are to my knowledge always very humid, I wonder whether the plant also suffers from the low humidity… Should we spray it more then?

I also read that it's most common for plants to die b/c the owners tend to give them too much water. As the owner told us not to water it, we didn't. But the soil of the Yucca looks quite dry so it's quite tempting to water it once in a while? Can we do that or will we cause more harm?

Is there any way we can save this plant and make it look as best as it can when the owner picks it up again? The owner is a really nice guy and we feel really bad for not being able to take care of his plant :/

I appreciate all answers and have a happy new-year all of you Y!Answerers ;-)

  • How to adjust valves on a Suzuki Savage?

I have the Clymer's manual, but it only describes how to remove/inspect/install the valves.

I just need to adjust them... I know where to find the "valve adjustment cover" and I know that the space should be 0.08, but how do I proceed? :p I know to be careful, and that big risks are involved when I would adjust them badly, that's why I'm asking ;-)

I should start off with somehow bringing the piston to some position, right? And then adjust the valves to the correct position. That's all I know...

I'm a noob, I know that, but I want to learn how to do it, and I cannot find anything online, that's why I'm asking here...

  • Foldable bike slower?

I'm having an argument with my friends over a foldable bike. They say it is per definition slower than a regular bike, and I have unsuccessfully tried to convince them otherwise.

The main argument would be that the smaller wheels would somehow cause the bike to go slower.

My counterargument is that the size of the wheels doesn't matter, providing that you have gears that compensate for that. It doesn't matter how fast the wheel has to spin, the amount of friction with the ground will be the same.

Another argument is that a spinning wheel causes a field of gravity outwards. This outward force would help the bike keep its speed.

My idea is that that kind of force doesn't play a role in the movement of the bike, but even if it would, the outward force of the large spinning wheel would be quite the same as the one of a small wheel spinning faster.

Let's suppose the width of the wheels of both types of bike are the same.

The only thing I can think of is the friction at the point where the wheel is attached to the fork. The amount of friction there would be larger with a foldable bike, because the wheel spins faster and thus makes more spins for the same distance travelled with the bike.

The question remains: would this amount to a significant difference for the user, and would the weight of a lighter foldable bike not nullify the higher amount of friction?

  • How hard is it to install a turbo?

And which turbos can I use? For example, if I want to buy an 2001 BMW 520, can I install the turbo that alfa romeo now puts on their 1750cc engines? Because that turbo is state of art and amazing :) :) Or are there a lot of things to consider? And how much would that alfa romeo turbo cost approx.?

  • Einstein time travel up to date?

What I learned of Einstein's time-travel-theory is that a tiny portion of the center of every mass consists out of something else than space. An object in that location would be able to control time, but not space; as opposed to us (we have control over space, but not over time). (I don't understand why he jumps to that conclusion)

The only way to time travel would be via a black hole, and only when the black hole has shrinked in size so much that it is beyond the boundaries of that inner "thing" in which space does not exist. You would have to be slingshotted through the "thing", avoid collision with the black hole, and get back into space, in order to time travel.

Because even light cannot escape from a black hole, it seems very unlikely that humans will ever be able to do this.

Is this somewhat correct? And has someone already corrected or questioned this theory from Einstein?

  • How much does a turbo cost?

In general, if you need to replace a turbo, what would you be likely to pay? I don't have a clue, so I'ld like to know a pricerange...

I recently read on ebay some guy replaced both turbo's on his 20 year old maserati biturbo, and it cost him nearly € 8000 ($10,900)! That's almost what's the hole car was worth!

  • toenails and tight shoes?

About a year ago, I went to see my doctor, because my two outer small toe nails started to become thicker, and at the usually white lash was a bit yellowish. They also started to grow a tiny bit to the side.

My doctor said it was because of my tight shoes, so I never wore them again. But those two toenails have remained the same until now… How can I get them to heal? I'm wearing sandals now most of the time, but that doesn't seem to cure them…

    Help :(

  • broken clutch after 2 months?

The other day a friend of mine had a problem in his 2 month old company car. According to him, his car went into high revs and it lost most power. Then smoke came from under the bonnet.

He called a mechanic who said that the clutch was worn out.

Is that possible?? After two months??? The guy is not a racer kind of guy, he drives by the limits…

  • Why do Americans buy trucks?

I just read that the Ford F series is the best sold car in the world, and it only even sells in America.

Primary confession: I'm European. And I don't really get the whole idea of driving a truck for fun… I took a look at the F series and while beauty is in the eye of the beholder… this is really an ugly car! :/ Not just on the outside, also on the inside… There's plastic everywhere and the ride must not be confortable.

My girlfriends father has a diesel Nissan truck, because they have horses and really need one. It's not a pleasant ride, the diesel shakes the hole cabin, there's plastic everywhere and while this is quite a long vehicle, there's no space in the back at all. All the room is spared for the back. Which makes sense, considering the purpose of a truck.

But why on Earth would you ride a truck if you don't need the space in the back?

    Curious for your answers,
