  • Is there something you can do in an interpreted language that you can't do in a compiled language?

Is there some functionality you can do with an interpreted language such as python, that you can't do with a compiled language such as C? For instance, how would you handle something like first-class functions in C? To me it seems like there might be certain things you could do in python you could never achieve in C, but I need a definitive answer on this before I pick the language for my next software project.

  • What should we name our new cat?

We have a female cat named Lucy. Our old cat (who passed away at age 10 from kidney disease) was named Lips, or Lippy. Our old cat is a Norwegian Forest Cat. The new cat we are getting is also a Norwegian Forest Cat since we fell in love with the breed. So... what should we name our new kitty-cat?

Ideas so far: Captain Majestic... and Ricky (to go with Lucy)

Any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks for taking the time to read this question!

  • Can you help me with this advanced windows batch scripting problem for experts only?

Ok, this is a toughie to reproduce. This is part of a larger problem, but I've narrowed down the issue to something very specific. If I can solve this problem, I will solve the bigger problem in the most elegant way possible. I would like a solution to this specific problem....

Heres a batch file, lets call it: "test1.bat"

    test1.bat:

    @ECHO OFF

    SET TMPTEXT=%~1%

    ECHO %TMPTEXT%

Now, on the command line call the batch file like so:

    test1 "blah "something;something else""

    The output should be:

    blah "something

I want the entire string output. I need a method of escaping the semi-colon, or the double-quotes, or some way to get that batch file output the entire string not splitting it up.

What I'm trying to achieve is: I have a text file with environment variables in it. I want to output all the lines in the text file, from a batch file, and substitute the environment variables. I'm using a for /f loop with a call to the above batch file to replace the environment variables... my only problem is semicolons in the command are throwing everything off!

I would be really surprised and grateful if anyone can solve this problem.

  • Is it possible to get a B12 injection liquid and syringes without prescription in USA?

In Canada we used to buy this all the time from Shoppers Drug Mart with no prescription. Now we move to Washington DC for 4 months temporarily and my wife needs the stuff (she is B12 deficient due to operation she had.) but all the pharmacies here require prescription. Does anyone know of a pharmacy or place to get this stuff that doesn't require prescription?

  • Traveling with cats by air - work opportunity what would you do?

I work at a job that requires travel for extended periods of time. My wife is currently unemployed. I currently have a work opportunity for 4 months in Washington, DC. I currently live in Toronto, Canada.

I would like my wife to come with me to Washington. My employer is offering me a raise if I go, and would be very disappointed, possibly with repercussions, if I turn down this job.

My wife needs our cat to travel with us, she loves the cat very much. She also demands that the cat travel with us in the cabin because the cat is very bad with traveling. This creates a stressful situation.

Is it worth traveling with the cat by air for a 4-month relocation? The job pays for everything, and with the raise I would be making additional income. We have a substantial debt and need to find ways of alleviating our financial situation, this work could help. If I turn down this work and lose my job, I could be in trouble. However, the cat, and traveling could cause some stress with my wife. I love my wife and enjoy spending time with her throughout the week, so I wouldn't want to leave her behind. What would you do?

  • Anyone remember an old toy with tiles attached to strings, that could be folded and unfolded to create shapes?

    Description from my friend:

"remember that old toy that was like all these tiles connected with complex strings and you could like fold them over, and fold them again, then unfold them differently - it was so cool"

"it was one item, made of a bunch of small tiles, wired together

but the wires were sort of like, wrapped around the outer edge of the tiles, and cris-cross all through em, so you can rotate them against each other and they stay attached"

If you have any idea, or guess even, what this toy could possibly be, you may just earn 10 points.

  • Can you please explain my cat's strange behaviour?

We have a male cat (Norweigen forest cat) about 7 years old, he is a black colour.

We have this one dark-brown blanket he will sit on and start kneading his paws on it. He kneads his paws for a little while. If you move him or disturb him he will meow. He seems to revert to a kitten-like state when he starts needing like this. He needs hypnotically for a little while and meows if we disturb him. Sometimes he'll do the same thing to either me or my wife, like, he'll start kneading his paws on our lap and if we disturb him he cries out "meow!!"

He's always done this since he was a kitten, but lately he does this almost every night - and it usually only happens one particular brown blanket we have.

Does anyone know what he is doing or what is going through his mind when he does this behaviour? Any information would be appreciated, thanks!

  • Have you seen a funny flash movie with a Japanese sounding nonsense song?

I had this on my computer a while ago. It was a japanese sounding nonsense song that had subtitles to go along with the song. It was hilarious, wacky, and it made very little sense. Does anyone have any clue what I'm talking about? It sounded like a popular funny song, I forget what it's called, I'd like to download it again.

  • What should I get my fiance for her birthday?

My fiance's birthday is coming up soon. Really soon. (Less than 2 weeks) Like usual, I've forgotten to get her something until now. Normally I'll get her to choose her own present and give her money so she can buy it herself. I'm not too romantic, as you can tell. Anyway, this year I'd like to surprise her with something she'd like.

She's told me she might want shoes, a purse, perhaps jewelry, clothes. I've gotten her clothing and jewelry in the past, it seems kind of boring.. however if that's what she wants... I just don't know! Does anyone have any ideas for what I should get her? Thanks for the help.
