How to heat condo in winter if I go on a trip?
Condo has a PTAC unit in living room (like you see in hotels) - this is the only source of heat for living room/dining/kitchen area. It also doesn't have a thermostat so I have to manually go over and turn on or off at the unit. I asked GE if a thermostat could be added to this old model and they said no. So, how do I keep things at a minimal temperature in winter if I go away?
5 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 year agoLeftover odor after death cleanup?
How can we get rid of leftover odor following death in a residence? Person was deceased for some time before being found. Hazmat team already removed some items and parts of the carpeting. There's still a lingering odor, though.
6 AnswersCleaning & Laundry3 years agoCan cell phone towers affect tooth sensitivity?
I had about 3 or 4 sensitive teeth that bothered me. After moving to a new residence about 12 miles away, none of the teeth bother me anymore. There are a lot of metal fillings in my mouth. There was a cell phone tower (actually more than 1) right across the street from where I used to live. Could the cell phone tower have been affecting my teeth? I have no other explanation.
2 AnswersDental5 years agoSearching for good pizza in Portland, OR area?
I miss the good pizza on the other side of the country. I realize that the thing missing from pizza in Portland is the sauce - there's hardly any on it. It's like it's only brushed on as coloring. So, where can I find a good pizza in the Portland, OR area that actually has a lot of sauce on it?

1 AnswerDecorating & Remodeling7 years agoHow to reinforce Ikea dining chair?
Anyone have any ideas how I can reinforce some Ikea dining room chairs? What comes loose and is wobbly even after trying to tighten is what holds the cross side to the front leg.
The dining chairs I have are Ikea Aron. They aren't available anymore but you can see a picture here: http://www.ikeafans.com/galleries/index.php?n=1237...
7 AnswersDo It Yourself (DIY)7 years agoHow do I get smell out of imported clothing?
I received a sweater as a gift. It was made in China and reeks of some chemical smell - smells like solvent or gasoline almost but maybe it's formaldehyde. Anyway, the odor is very strong and I can't wear it that way. This is a wool sweater, so how can I get the smell out of it?
2 AnswersCleaning & Laundry1 decade agoCanada/US Border Crossing - can I bring these items with me to Canada?
I am a US citizen going to Canada for a 4 day vacation. I have a question regarding some things I would normally take with me on a trip:
1) computer and camera - do they have to be declared at the border either way?
2) Is it ok to bring vitamins?
3) I often use either an herbal combination (valerian/skullcap/hops) or L-tryptophan to help me sleep. Are either of these items against Canadian customs rules?

I have quite a few Canadian coins (over $50 worth). My local US banks won't exchange Canadian coins. So, if I drive my coins across the border into Canada, will a Canadian bank exchange them for US money without my having an account at their bank?
3 AnswersPersonal Finance1 decade agoCan magnetic field affect alarm clock?
So far, I have had problems with 3 different alarm clocks (even different brands). They were all battery operated, digital display. In each, case the clock works just fine at first. Then the alarm will only go off sporadically, even though it's been set and turned on and even when new batteries have been put in. So, can an alarm clock be affected maybe by magnetic fields or by being near where the pipes run under the apartment? There's also 3 cell phone towers across the street from me.
2 AnswersOther - Electronics1 decade agoIs there anyplace I can read the Detroit century box letters?
I saw some of these letters from the 1901 time capsule in a special exhibit at the Detroit Historical museum in 2001 but when I tried to search their website I couldn't get anything. Is there someplace online or a published book that has these letters? They were very interesting to me, but I don't live in the area anymore to try to hunt them down in person.
1 AnswerOther - Society & Culture1 decade agoCan I use a portable heater on a 15 amp circuit?
I have a portable oil filled radiator type heater. At the warmest setting, it is 1500 watts. The circuit breaker has 15 amps for the bedroom and living/dining area outlets. I read someplace that you should only use 80% of capacity, which in this case would be 1440 watts. (15 amps x 120 = 1800 and 80% of that is 1440) So, does this mean I shouldn't use this heater?
2 AnswersOther - Home & Garden1 decade agoAre flat bedsheet smaller than they used to be?
I'm almost certain that in the old days (like 1950's and early 60's) the flat sheets used to be larger (wider across). It seems like you could tuck them in all around and they would stay tucked in, more or less. This is for a regular bed, nothing extra deep. So, have the flat bedsheets actually gotten smaller?

3 AnswersNon-Alcoholic Drinks1 decade agoWhy has the cost of housing gone up so much in relation to wages?
In 1950, the federal minimum wage was 75 cents per hour, or $1,560 per year. It was possible to buy a new house for $5,000. Cost of house was 3.205 times minimum yearly wage. This July, minimum wage will be $7.25/hour, or $15,080/year. If the ratio stayed the same, a new house would cost 15080 x 3.205 or $48,331. So, why has the cost of housing gone up so much?

After you give notice to a landlord (lease allows him to show apartment to prospective tenants with 24 hr notice), how do you make sure your stuff is secure? It seems like anyone can come in and scope the place out, then break in later and know exactly what you have and where it is.
