I received a new visa debit card from my bank. The card seems okay. However beneath my name there is embossed an extra letter: "Y"

I've never seen this on any of my other cards. Anyone from the card industry know the reason for this? I can call the bank after the weekend, but your answer will be a great help until then.

Racism, xenophobia: what to do?

A checkup on French society reveals a serious problem: over the past ten years, according to official statistics, racist threats and assaults have grown by 14 and 16 times respectively. Antisemitism is becoming less and less taboo. According to recent opinion polls 24% of people asked believe there are too many Jews in France, and 71% that there are too many Arabs. Racism is pervasive: 45% understand voting in favor of the National Front.

Thus, it is urgent to react to this danger, to counter the political expression of popular nationalism found among the National Front, to counter the establishment of neofascism on a European scale that Etienne Balibar brought to light in November 1990's Le Monde Diplomatique.

I consistenly encounter believers in abrahamic religions who describe how their own faith, or perhaps more accurately their need for faith, arises because the alternative is unthinkable--death. They can't or won't imagine a permanent end to themselves.

I try to imagine what it's like from their perspective, but it still confounds me. Anyone out there sympathetic enough to break it down for me?

Why exactly should people at VT get a benefit that someone who, for example, had a parent or beloved friend die in a car crash that same weekend does not receive? Their tragedy is no less meaningful, no less crippling, only less public.

Okay, I grasp all the mechanics of iambic pentameter, except that discussions of form, like of sonnets, seem to treat stress as if it is too obvious to explain. They only give examples. Listen, I must have no ear for this aspect of speech. As I speak and hear in English inflection changes to suit the whim of the speaker--not to mention regional variation.
