  • How can I make Unix grep stop as soon as it finds a match?

I've got a command like this:

    find . -name "*txt" -exec grep -l "mypattern" {} \;

I really only want to know if "mypattern" exists in any of the .txt files (I don't care how many times, just a yes or no), so I want grep to stop as soon as it finds a match rather than going through the 300 or so files found by the find command. Is there a way to do this?

  • How long does it take to get from Palo Alto, CA to Napa, CA in weekday afternoon traffic?

I need to be in Napa, CA at 6 pm on a Wednesday. What time do I need to leave from Palo Alto to be sure of arriving on time? Google says it only takes 1 hour 40 minutes but I know rush hour will add some time to that...I just need to know how much. Thanks for any advice!

  • Help with Spanish translation (no online translators please)?

I'm trying to translate the lyrics of this song "No me llames extranjero" by Alfredo Cortez. I'm having some trouble with this: "Míralos, se van al cielo por una risa paloma que los reune en el vuelo."

They go to the sky ...... which unites them on their flight.

What is "por una risa paloma" here? "by the laugh of a pigeon"? "for the laugh of a pigeon"? Please help me out.

  • Questionnaire for homeschooled students (part 1)?

My husband and I are planning to homeschool our girls (currently 3 and 1) and we've read a lot of material at parents but I'd like to get the perspective of homeschooled students themselves. Please share your experiences! Here are some questions to start off and any other comments are welcome. Thank you!

    1) During which ages or grades were you homeschooled?

    2) Why did your parents or guardians choose to homeschool you?

    3) What type of homeschooling did you do? (particular curriculum, unschooling, etc.)

    4) Who was/were your primary teacher(s) (mother, father, both, self)?

    5) How did your teachers handle subjects with which they weren't familiar themselves (e.g. foreign languages or advanced math)?

    6) Describe a typical school day for you (if you can!), at various ages if possible.

    7) Were you homeschooled alone or with siblings or other students?

  • Why does it sometimes take forever to download attachments from Yahoo! Mail?

About half the time I try to open or save an attachment I receive in my Yahoo! mail account, it gets stuck on the "Getting File Information" dialog box. For example, it will sit showing that little paper icon floating from the globe to the yellow folder for ten minutes (on a 21kb PDF file!) until I give up and cancel the whole thing. I've tried closing and restarting the browser but that doesn't help. It seems to be random and unrelated to file size or type. Is there any solution, other than just waiting until Yahoo! is in a better mood? BTW, I'm using IE 6.0, but I don't think it's browser-related because I only have this problem downloading from Yahoo!

  • What's a good semiformal dress for someone with VERY short legs?

I have VERY short legs (I even have to hem petite-length pants; the only thing I can wear off the rack is capris, and they look full-length on me). I love long floor-length evening gowns because they elongate my legs, but I'm going to an semiformal event where I've be overdressed in one. A "cocktail dress" is supposed to be knee-length, but I look terrible in dresses of that length, especially the sheath style. What are my other options? Is it possible that I could look all right in a knee-length dress with a particular type of skirt?

  • Looking for a lipstick & lipliner in a single unit?

I'm looking for a lipstick and lipliner in a single unit (like one on each side). I think Avon used to carry a product like this but I don't see it on the website anymore. Does anyone know of any other brands that might have this?

  • Is this evening gown appropriate for winter?

I have a long wine-colored, velvet, spaghetti-strap gown with a shawl made of some sheer material. The fabric suggests winter, but the style suggests summer to me. In which season would it be appropriate to wear it?

  • Why do people send out random MySpace friend requests?

It's happened to me a couple of times now where I get random MySpace friend requests from total strangers with whom I have nothing in common. Some of them are obviously the equivalent of spam, wanting me to look at some naked woman's webcam or something, but others are from seemingly normal people whom I don't know at all. I'm not even active on MySpace---how do these people find me and why do they want to be added to my friends list?

  • Why does my eye makeup always end up UNDER my eyes?

I don't put on any makeup on my bottom lids because it always smudges terribly (I usually use Revlon ColorStay eyeliner which is supposed to be waterproof/smudge free, whatever). So now I put mascara on my TOP lashes only. Within a few hours, I have black smudges all underneath my eyes. I don't rub my eyes or anything. I've tried putting on different kinds of primer, etc, that are supposed to keep makeup from smearing, but nothing seems to work. All my eye makeup ends up under my eyes, even if it apply it only on top.

Do I just have weird eyes, or is it possible that I'm applying it wrong? Please don't just tell me your favorite brand of makeup unless you've actually experienced this problem before and had it solved. As I said, I've tried lots of different brands, including those that are supposed to be smudge-free, but everything smudges!

  • How do you say "Welcome to America" in German?

I've heard "Willkommen nach Amerika", "zu Amerika", "bei Amerika", and "in Amerika". Are all these options valid?

Please don't point me to an online translator; I'm looking for answers from native German speakers.

  • For Korean speakers who have seen "Lady in the Water"...?

When the Korean mother is telling her daughter the story of the narf, is it real Korean, or a bunch of nonsense syllables? And if it's real Korean, does she actually use the words "narf" and "scrunt"? If not, what does she use instead? Thanks!

  • Baby gift for a second daughter?

The newborn is the second child (both are girls) so the family already has all the essentials. It's okay if it's a little impractical or extravagant, since it's a gift from coworkers. I have $70 to spend, some of which should go to a token gift for the 2-year-old so she doesn't feel left out. I'm under extreme time pressure (my boss was supposed to do it but she ran out of time) so it needs to be easy to find---no online specialty stuff. Thanks in advance for any advice!

  • When and how much do you tip a valet?

I've heard $2-5 is an appropriate tip for a valet, and in the past I've always tipped when I get my car back, but I've read in some places that you should tip both when you leave your car and when they bring it back. Is this true? Also, does the amount change if it's for a private party than for a restaurant or something?

Thanks...I'm going to a formal event and don't want to commit a faux pas.

  • What goes better with a cream-colored dress, silver or gold?

I'm wearing a cream-colored dress to a formal event and need to buy some shoes and an evening bag. Should I go for gold or silver, or some other color? Silver matches my skin and hair better but I think gold matches cream better.

  • Is it okay to wear plastic hair accessories to a semi-formal event?

I have thick hair and the only way I can wear it up is with a special super grip plastic clip I have. It's black, the same color as my hair, so it blends in pretty well, but I'm worried it will look cheap or tacky. I was thinking of getting some jeweled pins to clip up my hair in the front, to draw attention away from the black plastic clip. Would that work?

The only other option I have is to go to a salon and have them use 75 pins and a ton of hair spray like I did at my wedding, but I don't really want to spend the money and time since this event isn't THAT formal, just a gala dinner. Any suggestions?

  • What jewelry goes with a cream-colored dress?

I've got a formal cream-colored gown I'm planning to wear to a gala event. What kind of jewelry can I wear with it? I think pearls might clash since they're white, but could I do pearl drop earrings since they'll be farther from the dress? Does a gold necklace work? Any other suggestions?

  • What's a good gift for an eighth-grade girl?

She's into soccer, softball, tween movies and actors, Harry Potter, arts and crafts, music (but I don't know what kind---I've already done the iTunes gift card), dogs and cats. She babysits my two young daughters, who love her. This is for her "eighth-grade graduation" and she will be attending a competitive private high school in the fall. I'm looking to spend around $30.
