  • How long does it take to raise the anchor of a large ship?

    Purely curious, there are some vids of them moving slowly but nothing I can find describes how long they take typically or how fast they move when being raised.

  • Why can't I target my iframe?

    I am playing with html5/css3 as a small intro to web design, out of the blue I'm a little stuck as to why I can't target my iframe after giving it a name, probably a simple one but the reason escapes me.. the source is below, as you can see dead simple idea..

    <!DOCTYPE html>

    <html>

    <head>

    <meta content="text/html; charset=utf-8" http-equiv="Content-Type" />

    <title>Menu Bar</title>

    <link href="menuBar_styles.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />

    </head>

    <body>

    <div id="master_div">

    <div id="bar_div">

    <div class="linkBox"><a href="http://www.google.co.uk"/ target="pageFrame">Google</a></div>

    <div class="linkBox"><a href="http://www.yahoo.co.uk/%22%3EYahoo

    </a></div>

    <div class="linkBox"><a href="http://www.aol.co.uk/%22%3EAOL

    </a></div>

    </div>

    <div id="content_div">

    <iframe name="pageFrame" height="100%" width="100%"></iframe>

    </div>

    </div>

    </body>

    </html>

    So what do I have to do to make my target value in my link valid so I can open the hyperlink in the iframe?

  • Why can we control our breathing?

    I was watching tv before and a question hit me that I can't seem to find the answer to.

    We breath on reflex, we can't choose not to breath without our subconscious kicking in and breathing for us (be it if we pass out).

    What I don't get is why we can alter our breathing pattern at all, why can we choose to breath faster or slower, to hold our breath, for us then to forget about it and it become automated?

    I ask because people compare breathing to our heartbeat, yet we can't control that, or the myriad of other vital bodily actions, so why that one?

  • Should the London Underground be Automated in Future?

    Well apparently its on the cards as a possibility, personally I don't see the problem when train drivers expect a 40k salary when 21-25k would be more than fine when you consider that is the average wage of most other industries of a similar skill level, especially when it is forcing train fares to even greater heights. Though its only an opinion based on little understanding,

    So I do wonder.. What do you think?

  • Why atheism over theism?

    I'm just curious as to why? Some say because they don't have to believe, some say surely a 'God' cannot exist, some because they disagree with 'Religion' (which isn't theism), some say science...

    Many of the greatest scientists of recent years (Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton & Galileo come to mind) and philosophers though-out the ages have agreed that something set the ball rolling, that by definition would be a 'God' to us.

    At the same time I can understand the scepticism of those when presented with 'hail jesus!' types who rely on blind faith in books written 80 years (2-3 generations after actual events), and those who hold on to ancient (often unbelievable) beliefs without questioning their origins & nature.

    Also before someone says that Atheists don't have 'beliefs' then justify the facts that god doesn't exist (absence of evidence isn't an reason, since plenty of science is based on interpretation, which are beliefs (just like that god doesn't exist is a belief)).

    Anyway why..

  • Why do Christians/Jews, Muslims & Hindus a such a problem with this..?

    All their different gods, God/Yahweh, Allah & Brahman are basically the same single god. All the religions believe in a single god, people have souls, and in some form of karma or judgement based on an eye for an eye (not in the literal sense but in that you will be punished/judged for exactly what you have done), and that god's grace extends to all those who truly ask for it.

    Notch up that they all point towards human's learning something from life and that its, in some form, a learning experience for God's creation/child (which is our soul made in his/her image).

    Another thing would be that all religion's are a take on a similar message passed down at different times in different places that share the common message "god exists, learn, then go home and be judged on what you have done" etc.

    I have friends from all faiths who deny the other's god on teachings by their religion, not the word of god. Why can't they all see there is one god, he sent his message in different ways and that their all the same?

    (As for the trinity thing, god can be anything he damn well pleases, he made the universe and all and never technically appeared in two places at once as either one, though the whole god on earth thing is a little awkward and contradictory (sorry but I personally have trouble with believing in Jesus),

    But anyway, what is your opinion?

  • PLEASE HELP, MATHS involving angular momentum or something!!?

    Consider a car of mass M moving around a circular track of radius r with angular velocity w. Write expressions (in terms of M, r and w) for:

    (i) the speed (not the velocity) of the car.

    (ii) the force F required to keep the car on its circular course. Evaluate this force in the particular case of a 500 kg car, travelling at 30 m/s on a track of radius 30 metres.

    I desperately need the formula for part one as I have an exam soon and can't remember it for the life of me and can't find my paperwork with it on (this is from an past paper)

  • Why is their such a detestable, hate enciting book in the bible!?

    And yes, I'm referring to Jude, hate the clothes on their back, how can any religion who complains about the aggressiveness of others support such a book, that condemns all other religions or atheists.

    Feel free to twist the words into something nicer, but they are and always will be detestable and their meaning is clear to understand, as a warning from any other group who speaks against Christianity. Especially since it is not really a book in itself but reads in the form of a letter or note added later.

  • Can the bible be considered fact when it was written 2-5 generations after Jesus died?

    I mean from the perspective that if it was written so many generations after the actual happening then the chance of 'chinese whispers' (exaggerations) to warp the story from perhaps a more normal story.

    The bible is a very good story but it is not hard to discern the following if you were to make the bible sound more like something that could happen today?

    1) The prediction of the Messiah was simply a leader stating 'One day someone will arise to put this country right' which has been said about past leaders since.

    2) Jesus was the Messiah because he was a destined King and the facts of his birth were altered to make a good story (like he may have been born in an Inn and it sounded better as a stable)

    3) Jesus was told he was god's son since he was born and so beleived it himself and his miracles were just added to liven up a good story.

    4) Herod wanted to kill Jesus because he thought he would replace him as king. (also somewhere messiah was changed from its true meaning as the next king of the jews, to next kind of angels or something, how'd that change happen)

    5) When Jesus' body went missing it is said that the desiples bribed the guards to make them think they did it, what if they did and just changed the facts?

    This isn't a slander of the bible in any way, I just simply wish to know your thoughts on whether it can hold true when it was originally a story that had been told for generations that was written down later and so might have been exaggerated upon to make better reading.

    Lets here what you think!

  • Wht can't I ping my Proxy Server?

    The problem I'm facing is that I part operate a network split over 2 sites, each site has its own DC, and its own proxy/file server etc...

    The 2 DCs replicate to each other every 3 hours or so though dc1 points at 1 proxy and dc2 at another,

    I wish to connect from dc2 to dc1s proxy server since extra ports are available.

    Only problem... I Can't ping the proxy server!?

    The server is linux based but it shouldn't be an issue.

    I can ping the proxy when a computer connected to DC1 tries though anything under DC2 fails,

    Why?

    Please help.

  • What would this be in a dos Command Line?

    What would this be in exceptable DOS command line form:

    xcopy C:\Documents and Settings\Chris.Eagles.YMCA\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook C:\Backup /s /e /y /i /c

    because I understand that stuff such as 'Documents and Settings' becomes DOCKUME~1 and that goes for anything over 8 characters,

    also how can I find this out for myself with future command lines?

    Thanks
