Mechanics: What is this on 99 Dodge Intrepid, at end of upper radiator hose (pics available)?
Hi folks, I have a 99 Dodge Intrepid. I had a small leak around this block shaped thing at the end of my upper radiator hose. Its not the thermostat, thats on the bottom one. It looks like some pressure relief valve. The leak wasn't coming from the valve thing at top, but along the sides of it. Its been a slow steaming leak that only required 1/2 gallon of antifreeze per week to keep topped off. I didn't realize until today that my radiator fan fuse was blown. After sitting at a long drive thru restaurant line today, the temp hit 3/4. By the time I got home the light came on and poof, this thing popped off and exploded antifreeze all over the engine.
Please pictures of this at http://sharpnetwork.net/car.htm
My 2nd question is that a few weeks ago, I asked a mechanic how much this would be cost to replace. He said about 400.00, most of it labor. He said he would have to take the head off, or valve cover, not sure and thats why it was so much labor. If you look at the pics I have, it just looks like 4 small nuts holding it on. One screw might be a little tricky to get to, but other than that, it just doesn't look like something the head needs to be taken off. Is this true, I got the feeling I'm being taken advantage of. I decided to try to buy some more time and I got some High temp silicon rubber and put a whole bunch on this on it. The cover that came off still fits perfectly inside the grooves and is a snug fit, so I'm hoping because of this and me getting the fan fuse replaced, that it might possibly last or at least buy me some time. What do you think?
1 AnswerDodge1 decade agoWhat is this metal bar hanging under back of car (pics included)?
I've had a 99 Dodge Intrepid for past 2 years. Runs and rides great. My neighbor noticed something hanging that I've never noticed before. It sort of reminds me of an anti-sway bar, but I thought those were only on the front axle. Please take a look at these pictures (taken from the ground, under rear bumper). http://sharpnetwork.net/car.htm . The bar is detached from both side and it looks like it really doesn't even need to be there. Sort of looks like part of suspension, but suspension/shocks behave normally.
2 AnswersSafety1 decade ago1Gb memory shows as 917504K in POST, is this right?
I have two 512Mb chips installed. I could of swore that my memory countdown in POST used to show a higher number, like 7 digits (ie 1024000 for example, not an even number of course, but something bigger, I thought. Does this sound right? Task manager is showing 916976K Total physical memory. Am I delusional about a higher number? If you got 1Gb of memory on your machine, what does your POST or task manager show you?
7 AnswersOther - Hardware1 decade ago4 Geforce 9600 Video cards, How does it share processing power?
Ok, I have heard of putting two video cards into a computer for dual monitor support, but I was at a computer store today and they had an expensive demo gaming system with 4 Geforce 9600 cards in it. I asked whats the point of 4 cards and he said all 4 cards contribute/share to video processing. How does is this possible, is it automatic? I saw the 4 vga ports in the back and monitor only hooked up to one, but how can the computer share video processing power between 4 cards? Does it just automatically do it? I've never heard of such a thing. He said that system gets 115 fps. Holy smoke. My geforce 5200 only gets 15 fps on a heavy duty game.

How does Seth Green come up with all these hilarious skits every week!? I mean I can get creative, but to come up with this stuff over and over again, he's a genious. A couple months ago, Fox paid him 150 Million dollars for the next 22-28 (forget) episodes.
4 AnswersComedy1 decade agoMechanic/Transmission expert, what do these trouble codes suggest?
Problem started 2 days ago and no prior warnings. First I noticed, after it was warm, that when it would slowing to a light, when it was time to shift back into 1st, that it did it kind of hard. I think it has some sort of electrical motor to shift very slowly and smoothly. While it was warm, i put it from park into drive and it was kind of a hard jerk, which is totally abnormal.
Yesterday: Ran fine when cold. Then started doing a hard jerking shift into 2nd or 3rd, can't remember now. On way home, getting on freeway, it took longer than usual to get into overdrive. Got off the freeway, now its no 3rd or overdrive. A couple of times it did finally get into there. The car has Overdrive, 3 and L gear (no 2 on shift column). The car is behaving like I have it in 3 (which I believe is really just 2nd, because I've used that once a long time ago, so I recognize that it does rev higher in
Today: On the first start of the morning, it did shift to 3rd when it was time, but 5 mins later, it upshifted to 2nd and has been stuck there all day. Tach is about 3k at 30mph.
Trouble Codes that came on yesterday:
P700 Transmission Control System Malfunction
P0715 Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
P0732 Gear 2 Incorrect ratio
P0734 Gear 4 Incorrect ratio
P0733 P0733 Gear 3 Incorrect ratio
Was hoping a TPS would popup in there and that was the problem, but it did not. Are all the sensors, etc on the inside of the transmission and does this mean the tranny needs rebuilt/replaced, or is there any other possibility?

Check Engine light came on, but by the time I got home, the auto parts stores was closed and I couldn't get them to check the code.
So what do you think? Is my tranny going out, or could there be some other reason (ie vehicle speed sensor, the sensor for what gear you're in, etc). This is a great car and I'm within a couple of month paying it off, this is frustrating. The car I had before, the tranny went out. Its got about 177k miles on it.

Ok, so I went to subway because she wanted a foot long sub, but so did I. I didn't have enough for two footlongs. Just one footlong and one 6 inch. But I figured since she's petite that she probably wouldn't eat a footlong. Was I wrong or is 6 inches enough for a woman?
12 AnswersWomen's Health1 decade agoWhy Brake light fuse blows once a month?
I have a 99 Dodge Intrepid. I have this annoying problem that my brake light fuse blows about once a month. Luckily I haven't been pulled over for it yet. Any ideas? The default fuse is 15amps. Last time I went up to a 20 amp. Still blew. Now I'm out of fuses and only had a 30 amp I just now replaced. If its blowing, then its blowing for a reason and moving up in amps is not the idea solution as I might be preventing it from blowing if there is a valid reason. But since it takes 30-40 days to blow, i don't think there is a short circuit
4 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoCar A/C blows hot air, but system is charged?
I just bought a 99 Dodge Intrepid. It blows hot air. I figured, no problem, i'll just get a can or two of 134a and fill it up like I've done many other cars in the past. The a/c compressor comes on by the way. I was able to get a can of freon in there but it wont accept another can. I think my guage on this cheap thing I got from last year is broke. It says 110 psi which is way overcharged. I hooked it up to my other car which I know for a fact is properly charged. The guage on that read 100 psi , so I guess the guage is messed up. But regardless since I can't get any more freon in there, I have to assume its full.
Is there anything else that might cause it to blow hot air even though the compressor is kicking on?
6 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoNo spark from one wire, even when replaced?
93 Chevy Corsica 3.1 105k miles. Bought this car used 1 month ago. Ran good until today, no warning. When I got off freeway today I felt vibration at the light. Normally it idles so smooth you can't tell its on. Soon as I stepped on gas it was putt putting along. Behaving like when one cylinder isn't firing.
Pulled 4 of the 6 wires off the plug to check for spark and the one closest to front passenger side had no spark jumping to ground. I didn't see any metal inside the boot so I figured that was the problem. I bought a single replacement wire and it still runs the same and there is still no spark coming from this wire. At first I thought it might have been the crankshaft position sensor wire shorting against the engine because it happened in a 92 Lumina 3.1 (same engine) I had in the past, they are notorious for having that problem. The original wire protectors (snake tube thingy) is on it so that wasn't it. Code for EGR since I bought it, but cleaned the blocked holes today.
4 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoRefrigerator fan stop working?
I bought a used Hotpoint fridge. Of course a couple of days past the 30 day warranty I have problems. The fridge was ice cold all the time, very cold. I could hear a fan blowing before but now I don't. The compressor works still and I don't think its the thermostat since it still cycles on/off. Its not cold enough to keep milk good more than 2 days. I think the fan was used to push the cold air around, I guess, and I think thats the problem. I never tinkered with fridges before, but I am extremely knowledgeable with electricty, multimeters, relays, etc. Any suggestions on if this might be something I can tackle and check out myself and possibly fix? Where would this fan be located and I can try to check the wiring on it or possibly hardwire it to test it?

This song was redone my Mary J Blige on her album "The Tour" done in 1998. Album info for her song is at: http://www.rhapsody.com/maryjblige/233990_thetour , however, this does not have a 30 sec preview like all the other songs... Sorry..
I'm looking for the original artist of this song. When I was a kid back around early 80's, my dad used to play this song on his reel to reel tape deck all the time, haha... So this song came out before 1982, I estimate... Most likely a 70's or 80's song.
Thanks in advanced!
3 AnswersOther - Music1 decade agoIntermittent Power Steer fail; Relay makes a clicking noise when this happens?
I have a 96 Mercury Sable. A couple of days ago, the power steering seems to fail for a minute or so and then returns back to normal. It can be steered with one finger and then all of the sudden it feels like the car is turned off and I have to wrestle the wheel. I know power steer pumps are not electrical, but there is a strange thing, coincidentally happening at the same time which has never happened before either. I am seeing my fasten seatbelt light come on and off, and at the same time, I am hearing a relay clicking down in the fusebox by my feet. My seatbelt light only comes on when the car is first turned on, it doesn't come on whether its fastened or not (by the way I do use the seatbelt). Is there any plausible explanation to relay clicking and the power steering? This thing only happens once or twice a day and only for a minute or so at a time. Other than that, I dont get the relay clicks while I drive...
1 AnswerFord1 decade agoHVAC-Compressor unit outside stop working, only humming noise now, any ideas?
I noticed today that it was hot in the house, even though it was only 76 outside. I hear the furnace motor running all day, so thought it was strange. Felt air coming out of vents and not cold, just regular house temperature air coming out. I do know it was working last night because I felt the cold air hitting me in bed.
I went to see if that big unit outside was running and it is not. The fan blades do not spin and I do not hear the familiar humming noise of the compressor running. All I hear is an electrical humming (the kind you hear by high power transformmers on the telephone poles. I'd like to be armed with some knowledge before calling the hvac guy so I dont get ripped off.
A friend said something similar happened to him, and it was just a motor. My question is that would the fan motor not working also cause the familiar humming noise of the compressor to also not work? Is there a chance the whole unit don't need replaced by the symptoms I described? Thanks in adv...
7 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoWhat causes humming noise/vibration around drive shaft area?
92 Mercury Sable:I have this humming noise that increases with the speed of the car. It almost sounds like the car has some big truck tires on it. The treads on the front tire were getting low and I just had them replaced thinking maybe there was a broken belt, but there is absolutely no change in the noise. I can fee a low level vibration in the steering wheel. It sounds the most worst once I get past 45, but it makes the noise at all speeds.
One note, while I drive straight if I give the steering a quick short tug to the right, it gets a quick burst of "extra loudness/humming". If I give it a quick tug to the left, it actually gets really quiet.
I went back to the tire guy he started checking for play in the wheel. No noticeable play, when holding top and bottom of tire, but he turned by hand until transmission lock stopped movement and there was a slight clanking noise when it hit the transmission lock. He said that noise meant front end problem, does this sound right?
4 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoCar won't turn off.?
My cousin called me today because her GMC Blazer wasn't turning off. She was asking for me to take her battery out, but I knew the car wasn't going to stop if I did that because the alternator would still be kicking out juice, so I didn't bother doing all of those steps to cut the car off, she still had to drive home.
When the key was turned in the off position the dash lights, heater blow fan, etc would all turn off correctly. When the key was moved to the On position, all the dash lights, blower fan, etc started back up. So that made me rule out the ignition switch being faulty. But it has been 11 degrees and colder the past few days. I kinda figured it was due to the cold and something sticking somewhere.
My question is, what actually makes the car turn off when you move it to the off position? For example, on a lawnmower, the off switch simply grounds the spark plug wire to the chassis ground and short circuits it, so to speak. What exactly happens on a car?
6 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoHow does postal machines tell how much stamps you have on evelope?
I know that stamps have an invisible ink that glows under ultra violet light, and thats how it tells if you got a real postage stamp on it. The automated machines it slides down reads stamps and address. But how does it tell you have the correct amount in stamps? You know, lets say I put on a 37 cent stamp instead of 39 cents, or lets say I put an old 31 cent stamp and a bunch of 2 cent stamps to equal the 39 cents. Does each demonination have different color invisible ink or something to match the amount?
2 AnswersGovernment1 decade ago96 Merc Sable - Left Channel in Tape Mode dont work?
When playing the radio, the left channel plays fine. When playing a regular cassette or using the cassette to CD adapter, the left channel can be heard, but its like the volume is at the lowest possible level (ie volume = 1). The right side is loud and crystal clear. I have cleaned tape heads with alcohol and q-tip. I was gonna pull the radio out 4 days ago and see if I needed to solder the wire on the tape head, but I decided to listen to it again and it somehow played correctly. Both left and right channel were loud and crystal clear. Its been playing fine for 4 days but tonite I got in and the left channel sound is almost non existent (ie volume =1 on left side). Since I can faintly hear the left channel, that leads me to believe the wire is still connected to the tape head. If it was completely off, then their would be absolutely no sound from left channel. I've been using a mp3 player connected to the cassette to CD adapter and been enjoying it. But now its "mono", any ideas?
