I want to start a charity raising awareness about immigration and asylum?
I want to start a charity which uses media such as YouTube and facebook, etc. which raises awareness about asylum. The issues it would cover include:
- public awareness of issues facing refugees, asylum seekers and failed asylum seekers still in the UK
- research into issues facing refugees and asylum seekers, including reports on countries of origin
- response to media presentations of asylum seekers and human rights
I understand this is quite ambitious. I've looked at the charity commission's guidelines and it'd fall under the charitable purposes of 'advancing human rights' and 'advancing education'. I'm aware policy campaigning is not a charitable aim.
My main questions are therefore:
- how would I get volunteers, including web designers and so forth, to start the project on little money?
- how would I get funding?
- how do I go about establishing a charity, including, finding trustees with suitable skills, drafting a constitution, getting legal advice, finding employees, and so forth, without spending my own money?
- would it be easier to set up a company limited by guarantee without being registered as a charity (like Amnesty International) or register as a charity?
2 AnswersCommunity Service10 years agoWhat sort of humanitarian protection would you provide?
You have been asked to rewrite your country's law on providing protection to people fleeing other countries. What grounds would you allow a person to stay in your country? What thresholds would you use? What exceptions would there be, and what process would you use to choose who is eligible?
For a summary of the UK's approach, see a description I wrote at http://asylumaware.org.uk/wordpress/2011/04/what-i...
3 AnswersImmigration10 years agoCan you complete this survey about refugees and asylum seekers?
If you're a UK citizen or resident, would you mind answering a few questions about your perceptions of refugees and asylum seekers? The link is here: https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/viewfo...
Please don't look up anything before answering the questions; it's more about what you think than what's the right answer.
Also, in the answers below, if you want, you can just tell me what your impressions of refugees and asylum seekers are. If you're not a UK citizen or resident please feel free to comment below (just the survey needs to be UK citizens).
Many thanks!
3 AnswersGovernment1 decade agoWhy did Matthew telescope Jesus' genealogy?
Why did Matthew omit individuals from Jesus' genealogy (called telescoping), stating that there were 14 generations from David to the exile and 14 from the exile to Christ? As Matthew was writing primarily for Greek-speaking Jews, who would have been knowledgeable of David's lineage, why did Matthew make this change? With his insistence on mathematical neatness and his intended audience it seems that it's unlikely just to have been an oversight.
(Note that Matthew's genealogy is not the only example of telescoping in the Bible.)
12 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoWhy do many Americans oppose a government run health care service?
As a British citizen I'm perplexed to the US's opposition to socialised health care, particularly since:
1) The US has the lowest life expectancy of any G7 country, including the UK. Its life expectancy is lower than that of Cuba.
2) An American spends on average almost two and a half times more for health care than a British citizen ($7290 a year per capita compared to $2992 in the UK). It has the highest expenditure on health care as a percentage of its GDP (16%) in the world.
3) Health care was ranked the lowest in industrial countries by a study conducted by the Commonwealth Fund. According to the WHO, Isa's health care comes 37th out of 191 countries. The UK comes 18th.
4) 62% of all personal bankruptcies are believed to result from medical debt.
5) 15.3% of the population is completely uninsured, with 35% of the population being underinsured. The Institute of Medicine believe that 18,000 people die unnecessarily every year because they are uninsured or underinsured. Harvard put the figure at 44,800 excessive deaths a year due to a lack of insurance and another study put the figure at 100,000.
So, despite the high expenditure associated with privately provided health care, the actual service provided is poorer than in all other developped countries, who all have socialised health care. If the US had socialised health care, the costs per person would drop, the quality of treatment would increase, the amount of people accessing health care would also increase and the life expectancy would probably increase.
Therefore, why are many US citizens opposed to socialised health care?

If you can give a statistic, can you say which Inquisition it is, and also, if possible, how the statistics compared to secular courts at the time?

What motivates people to commit suicide attacks? Why do a vast array of terrorist organisations (Tamil Tigers, the PKK, Al-Qaida) make use of this method?

It seems with our hung parliament, a referendum on electoral reform *might* happen. Would you want this, and if so, what system would you vote for?
12 AnswersElections1 decade agoWhy does the USA spend so much more on healthcare than the UK?
The UK spends 8.9% of its Gross Domestic Product on healthcare, 83% of this funded by the state. This equates to $2992 dollars per person.
The US spends 16% of its GDP on healthcare, the majority of it through private health services. This equates to $7290 per person per year. This is the most expensive healthcare system in the world.
Why is there such a disparity in expenditure on healthcare? Why does the UK and all other G7 countries have a higher life expectancy than the US? Why does the US spend more than $2500 per head more than the next country, Norway?
And why, given how costly the American health service is, are there so many people who aren't able to access adequate healthcare?

10 AnswersOther - Politics & Government1 decade agoWhy are some Americans so opposed to socialised healthcare?
As a British citizen who takes the welfare state for granted, like in most European countries, I'm incredibly surprised at the opposition given to social healthcare in the US. Could some Americans please explain why this is such an issue? To me, it just seems that the wealthier members of American society simply don't want to help pay towards the care of their sick. It seems far more patriotic to me to fund a social healthcare programme for your own people than to support a war in a distant country.
14 AnswersPolitics1 decade agohow many minimal pairs are there between voiced and unvoiced "th"?
In English, there is the voiced "th" (this, mother) and the unvoiced "th" (thing, bath). However, the only minimal pair I can think of is "teeth" and "teethe". I have a feeling that most minimal pairs will involve a noun-verb pair, but most of these aren't minimal pairs since they involve a vowel shift (e.g. bath and bathe).
4 AnswersWords & Wordplay1 decade agowhy doesn't the monitor always work when the computer is turned on?
when the computer is turned on, the monitor doesn't always come on. It doesn't seem to connect to the computer and goes into power saving mode. It seems that timing is important, if you turn on the computer and then wait a few seconds and turn on the monitor it often works, but if you don't get it right, the monitor goes into power-saving mode and after that it's impossible to get it to connect to the computer. The only way to get it going is to shut down the computer and try again.

3 AnswersÉtudes supérieures1 decade agoHow do I go about finding/applying for a Masters in France?
I would like to do a masters next year, but in the UK it's probably going to be too expensive. I already speak French and have lived in Paris, and would like to do a masters. However, I'm finding doing research online a little counter-intuitive, and I can't find that much information. I'd particularly like to study the Middle East, but that's slightly problematic since I don't speak Arabic.
So, yeah, any help would be useful.
1 AnswerStudying Abroad1 decade agoDo you know of any places I can teach English in the Middle East?
I'm hoping to move to the Middle East to teach English, preferably Lebanon (Beirut in particular) or Amman, Jordan as I have friends living there, but I'd like to find a job before I leave. Do you know of any schools which teach English, any vacancies, or any websites where I might find information on teaching in these two countries/cities?
Many thanks.

7 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoDo you think a church service promoting gun ownership is going too far?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/8122767....
Don't you think this is too far? Ok, I'm against all private gun ownership, so that may shape my views, but there's nothing in the Bible about the right to bear arms (and no, the American Constitution isn't canon), nor indeed that your "life is worth protecting."
What do you think?
27 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoWhat would you say is good art?
I've recently asked a question on whether graffiti is art and many people said it is when it's of a good enough quality. I think a lot of people would say this about art in general. But what defines good art?
For example, was Francis Bacon, who Margaret Thatcher described as "that man who paints those dreadful pictures" an artist? (I don't want you to say however just whether you think Bacon was an artist)
