I am Australian (please stop assuming i am from the USA). I have a Science degree form an Australian university (BSc in Evolutionary Biology, and Biomedical Science, with First Class Honours in Immunology). I am an atheist. I have a defacto partner, but no kids. I have an interest in music but i am not taking it too seriously, it's just a hobby interest, genetics is my main goal. If you can't be botherred giving actual answers to my questions, just don't answer them, please don't flame them. If you want to correct my spelling, tips are welcome, always room to improve, just e-mail me and be polite and succinct.

  • is there any evidence that pure talk therapy actually works?

I really can't afford a psychologist, I'm a grad' student and my scholarship is about to run out so i should be putting money aside for while i'm writing up. But i need some help or i'm going to end up not finishing at all and on a disability pension like my brother.

I'm onto my fourth psychologist this year. The first two were referrals from my family doctor who were absolute weirdoes and made me feel uncomfortable straight away by the first or second session, i just knew it wasn't going to work with them.

The third tried to treat me for anxiety but was really fixated on exposure, so i just got wrapped up in being anxious about that, it honestly made me worse, things that never bothered me before got scary because i got wrapped up in thinking about how scary they were.

The fourth (the current one) had some good evidenced-based stuff on her website (ACT, mindfulness, etc.) but, by the third or fourth session with her, it felt like we were still taking a history. I asked what were we going to do and she said "i'm not here to give you advice". But i can't tell what she IS there for?

To her therapy seems to be just a "place to talk". I can see how that might help some people who find it hard to talk to people or don't have anyone else to talk to, people who start lots of things with "doc, i've never told this to anyone before..."? But i have two or three really close friend who i can tell anything. I find it way easier to talk to my friends than a psychologist, and i can do it for the price of a cup of coffee, or for free. They listen to me, and i listen to them, it's part of a healthy relationship. Pure talk psychology seems like some sort of prostitution, paying a fortune for something that's normally part of a reciprocal relationship. I have nothing against sex workers, i don't mean it as a slur, just i don't think i need to buy something that i'm getting for free as part of my relationships?

Is there some benefit of a professional that makes it worth it? is there some way i can get more out of this?

I'm willing to persist with the talk therapy if it's worth it, i can find the money if i have to, but is it actually any use, or just a huge waste of a lot of $2 minutes?

  • do you think this sounds truthful?

"I'm not trying to seduce you. :)

And you always tell me the truth, so I tell you the truth too.

The truth, in your case, is often flattering."

  • is there anything i can do to stop people drinking this dangerously?

Someone's invited me to a party, the plan for the party is an intricate drinking game, where it seems the typical player would end up consuming over 20 standard drinks throughout the night [aussie standard drinks i guess that's over 16 american drinks] and the goal is about 26 drinks (20 american standard drinks)

I was thinking of just giving it a miss and figuring anyone who does go is an adult who can make their own choices, but i looked at the attending guests and out of 25 guests at least 5 are aged 19 to 22 [the host is in his late 20s]

i now feel kinds guilty just ignoring this, it seems really creepy, 20 drinks is enough for alcohol poisoning, but i don't know how i could stop anyone getting hurt if i did go?

    what do i do?

  • Catholics who use natural family planning?

If sex is for reproduction why can Catholics have sex at times when conception is almost impossible?

How is that "better" than having non-reproductive sex with someone of the same gender?

    goes to graduate school

    listens to podcasts

orders a decaf skinny latte at the pub

uses their internet phone to look up the ingredients of vegan washing powder in the supermarket

openly kisses their transsexual lesbian girlfriend at a German avant-garde concert which features more "found object percussion" than actual instruments

  • do trans female clitorises have any erectile tissue?

i read somewhere that they just use "skin" from the head of the penis, but that doesn't seem like it would make a very realistic and responsive clitoris? is it just an oversimplification? or do they really just use skin?

do they use a bit of corpus cavernosum as well?

i've heard Dr Suporn uses most of the penis to make vulva? but do others just discard all the erectile tissue?

  • can transsexuals and "chasers" ever be "just friends"?

  • do i really need the keyboard for the windows surface?

does the windows surface have a keyboard on the touch screen or do i need the keyboard to do any typing at all? i want to use it lying on the couch/bed for editing word documents (not lots of typing, but the odd bit here and there), i don't want to have to find a table for it to type, that sort of defeats the purpose of having a tablet.
