How and why did White America embrace hip-hop?
Hear me out, I'm a Black man in my late 30s, I didn't grow up around hardly any white kids until college (1995), and didn't really hang out in majority-white social circles until 1997 right after Tupac and BIG's deaths. It didn't dawn on me until a couple years ago that whites really got into hip-hop around the time of the Chronic ('92) or even a bit before. I'm wondering what prompted that. Me and my peers embraced it in large part because it was 'our' music, that people who looked and talked like us were represented. That can't be why white people bought in. Now hip-hop has devoured the pop music genre, mostly due to its popularity amongst white folks. I feel like white folks embracing hip-hop is a big piece of the U.S. cultural puzzle that I don't get. My black friends who grew up around whites can't really explain it. Any answers? Thanks.

I could've sworn that while Barry Bonds was playing, "BONDS 25" was on the left field wall in SF, next to the other retired numbers like "MCGRAW NY" or "OTT 3" etc. I thought the Giants had retired BOBBY Bonds number sometime before 1993 but allowed Barry to wear it as an exception, being his son. Now, I don't see #25 retired anywhere in the park, but assume it's unofficially retired, similar to #34 by the Dodgers for Fernando Valenzuela.

It seems that half the people I know outside of my family either need pills, have some sort of diagnosis, way too hyper or something. Most of these people are over the age of 30. Do people like myself and others who are able to cope without prescriptions or excess caffeine have some sort of responsibility to the world? Just asking.

3 AnswersEconomics8 years agoIsn't it sometimes better not to talk when emotionally upset?
I saw a TV show recently where a guy's father had just died and he was outside chopping wood. His well-intentioned lady-friend asks him to put the ax down and he eventually, literally, cries on her shoulders. But, in real life isn't it sometimes better to keep chopping and chopping or running or doing something physical until the pain of life subsides?
I suspect more men would agree with me than women, but welcome all answers.
