  • Do Split Infinitives Require the word "to"?

My professor is a huge stickler on grammar, and I am not completely sure on all of the rules regarding split infinitives. How I understand it is the first word is what you are trying to do, and the second is the degree in which you are doing it. An example is "to explain efficiently" versus "to efficiently explain."

What I am unaware of is whether or not split infinitives require the word "to" before the infinitive. An example of this: "not necessarily defined by" versus "not defined necessarily by."

Also, when is it appropriate to split the infinitive? If I were to say "I want to legally change the drinking age," this statement is technically wrong. According to the professor, it should be "I want to change legally the drinking age," but this sounds grammatically wrong.

    Any suggestions/advice would be appreciated.

  • What does 14KGE Mean on a Necklace?

I know that 14K means 14 karat gold, but I am not sure about the 'E.' With that, what is the difference between a piece of jewelry stamped 14K vs. 14 KGE?

  • Best Tea Remedies for Sore Throat?

I've had a sore throat for almost 2 weeks. I went to a doctor, and he claims it is nothing more than the common cold. I personally have never been sick for more than a day at a time, so this is completely abnormal for me.

Any suggestions on which types of tea to use (green, white, black, etc), or specific flavors to use in the tea? I was never a tea drinker, so my knowledge of it is limited. Any other advice on other remedies would also be appreciated.

  • Jade Dragon and Phoenix Pendant?

I have a pendant made in Hawaii. One half is a Dragon, the other a Phoenix, and the material is jade. It is meant to break apart in the middle to divide into two pieces (similar to a friendship necklace).

I am unsure of the proper way to break it down the middle without actually breaking/ruining the pendants themselves. It is too strong to break by hand. Any suggestions or information is helpful.

  • Why is my Question not Showing?

I've asked the same question 4 times in the last 2 days, and only once have I seen it come up under the list of questions in the category. That is also the only one that has had responses. What is the reason for it not showing up in the search/browse engine?

  • How to Tell Parents About the Relationship?

I'm 22, and have been dating this guy for a few months now. There's nothing I don't like about him, but I'm worried about telling the family. Unfortunately, my family is traditional Polish Catholic, and can be extremely stubborn...

With that in mind, you could probably assume that this is about inter-racial dating, with me being white and him being black. I personally have no problem with inter-racial dating, but I'm really nervous about bringing this up to the family. I live with my grandparents, who are even more old school.

It's not like we're looking at marriage or anything like that (it's only been a few months), but it's something that will have to come up eventually. Any suggestions on how to go about doing this? Would it be better to talk to them before I bring him to meet them, or do both at the same time, in hopes for less potential yelling? If anyone has any advice or experience in the area, it would be appreciated.

  • Sonic Mega Collection Plus for PC?

Does anyone know if the "Sonic Mega Collection Plus" for the PC will work for Windows Vista? I know it works for Windows XP, but I have not seen anything that says whether or not it does for Vista.

Anyone have any idea on any Sonic games for the PC for that matter?

  • I'm Physically 22, but Mentally 13?

I'm a 22-year old female, but I feel like I'm still in middle school when it comes to relationships. The only guy I've tried dating was a friend whom I've known since the age of 4 (and that hardly even made it to making out). This is not to say that I wanna get laid or anything like that; I want to get myself at an appropriate emotional maturity level.

I need to get out of this bubble I've built up my whole life. I'm afraid to take risks; if I have more than 2 drinks I'll get drunk and end up like my parents, if I get to close (sexually) I'll get pregnant and screw up my life plan, if I lose the weight and then gain confidence, I'll prove everyone else right (as in I'll never be happy/find someone being overweight, from my family).

I was hanging out with a guy friend (known for a few months, grad student), and he tried to kiss me. It's not like 'OMG what are you doing?' I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing, like I'm in middle school again. I never really dated in h.s or college, and personally sex scares me (because of the pregnancy thing, and having no confidence).

I could lose about 50-75lbs, I know there's a pretty side to me if it were gone, but what I hate is the concept that in order to find that person, I need to lose the weight. I need to get this mindset out of my head, so if/when this were to happen again, I don't feel so kiddish and actually relax.

I know this is alot, and I'm asking like 50 questions at once, but it's frustrating. I'm getting to the age where if I meet a guy it's more than just dating; it's where people are really looking for a real relationship.

  • Who Hates having Roommates?

The walls in college apartments are somewhat thin in my opinion.

It's 3:30am over here, and I've been trying to get to sleep for the past 2 hours.

It sure doesn't help when you can hear one of them giggling and humping her guy all night long.....

Anyone else with similar roommate situations/experiences?

  • What's the Stupidest/Most Pointless Laws?

This is pathetic: you're pulled over for whatever reason, they ask for your registration, and it's in the glove compartment. Say there's two cops, one on each side of the car, and you have a friend with you. You ask your friend to grab the registration from the glove compartment, and (s)he hand's it to the police officer. Because you (the driver) did not physically hand it to him, you will get a ticket for no proof of registration.

What are some laws that you think should be eliminated?

  • Yahoo Answers Email History?

You know how in regular emails, when you respond to someone or vice versa, it shows the previous message(s)? Or how in your inbox there's a 'sent' category to see what you have sent to other people?

Does this exist for Y!A email as well? If so, where/how do I get to that? I've been able to reply to people and they have replied back, but I would like to see what I last sent them (if it's been 6 hours since I last talked to the individual, I'm not going to remember what I said).

  • If you could be anywhere right now?

Where would you be/what would you be doing if you could be there/do that right now?

I would be back in Hawaii (was there for 5 weeks this summer and was certified in scuba diving). I would finally go to Maui (I was on Oahu and the Big Island), and would go scuba diving and snorkeling all day long. Swimming with all of the fish, turtles, octopus, dolphins, discovering sunken ships, find shells.....

It was by far the most amazing experience I have ever had so far in my 22 years of life...

  • Why do Whites 'Worry' So Much?

Most would say that the Asian culture is interdependent (what an individual does affects the whole culture, alot of networking/concern of others), and the European/European American culture is independent (what I do affects only me, I should not let others affect my decisions).

If this is true, then why is it that throughout most of American history, European-American's (America in general) have always been concerned with how others of a different culture live their lives? They 'worry' so much about the other people in the world, that they forget about their own. An example would be how America goes out to some of the third-world countries to help the homeless, when America has the same issues.

Also (while this may be a little out-of-date today), many people of European descent seem to have an attitude that if an individual is not the same as themselves, then there is something wrong. Where other elasticities seem to accept people regardless of background. Why does it even matter; it's not as though trying to change other cultures is going to change their own issues?

It's like, how do you expect an adult to take care of a child if they can't even take care of themselves? I wouldn't want someone like that taking care of me.
