I love physics, biology and writing, in that order. Unfortunately, my knowledge of those subjects is inversely proportionate to my passion.

  • Can I prevent user deletion of an Excel '03 file-in XP-on a server?

I want many users to have (read-only) access to the file and access to the drive. I do NOT want them to be able to delete the file. Will simply allowing read-only access with password protection protect it from deletion by those users without the password?

Also, will mapping the drive on a computer allow all users of that machine to see the drive, or only that user whose login was used? I'm new at this, but it's pretty important to get it right. Any links will be appreciated.

  • Can an employee be required to set up equipment on his own time?

This barely matters to me, as I'm moving to a different job, but the employer requires telephone operators to have all computer programs open and ready, have other reference materials available, and to be answering the phone just after punch-in time.

Since desks and computers are shared between shifts, and there is only the locker area to store such materials - which belong to the employer - this means about 8 - 10 minutes each morning and evening caring for the materials.

Does anyone know the legality of this? (I mean *really* know, not guess at. I can do that myself.) I'm just curious.

  • How does the drilling fluid get *out* of the hole?

When drilling a well, does the drilling fluid seep out of the hole into a puddle? Is it pumped out? No matter how much I read, I can't seem to find this information. I have read about some systems that collect and treat it, but how does it come out? (I'm fascinated by oil and gas recovery and the equipment and processes involved, but have only the 'Net to do any research. Someday, I'm going to visit an offshore rig, by golly!)

  • Replacing brake light switch in '87 Honda Civic . . .?

We're a mom and daughter with no experience, but it looks simple enough. Two things:

    1. How do we determine if the car is a DX, Std., LX or something else. (No plates on doors, and the title or registration don't say.)

    2. The plastic pieces on the floor beneath the brake pedal made it obvious what was wrong, and why the brake lights wouldn't go off, but the replacement part has no such plastic? Any advice?

  • Will most manufacturers/dealers substitute XP for Vista on their new machines?

I use my home computer for writing, and I'm likely to have two or three large .docs, an Excel workbook or two, and several pictures open in Photoshp while I'm doing research online. My current system is old and tired, and can harldly handle even that, but I'd hate to waste the resources I can afford running Vista.

I don't do high-intensity gaming, don't need to edit videos, play around with music, or any of the things that people need killer machines for.

I'm not a geek, and the numbers are swimming around in my head when I sleep! I want something fast, with as much memory as I can afford, but my budget is only about $500. I've seen a number of machines that look good to me (I don't need a monitor, thank goodness.) but they all come with Vista. Any recommendations?

  • Illinois drug repository?

Does anyone know about the laws in Illinois regarding the donation of (unopened) targeted cancer drugs for the use of local cancer patients? If it is legal, do you know specifically where to take them in Chicago? It would be a shame to waste $10k worth of a drug because a regimen was changed, while someone who couldn't afford them hopelessly watched their tumors grow.

  • Regarding moon phases . . .?

I now live in California and have recently noticed that the moon sometimes looks more like the letter U than the letter C (or a backwards C.) Everything I find on moon phases shows the C-shaped moons, and talks about light reflected from the "left or right side" of the moon.

Does the moon sometimes look U-shaped from everywhere, and I've just been unaware of it for most of my life, or could it be that my new home has a different perspective (though that hardly seems to make sense to me.)

  • When were mechanical odometers replaced by digital?

My daughter thought I was crazy when I asked her how she knew that a car had over 200,000 miles on it. She didn't know that cars EVER rolled over to -0- after 99,999.9.

  • Yikes! I got a violation!?

Ok, 10,000 points and 1 violation, no biggie. And I will contest it, because I believe it was unwarranted.

But my real question is this: Does ANYBODY know the system for determining what happens to accounts (profiles?) that get violated? I've read that my Yahoo! account can be suspended or even terminated and, since my ISP partners with Yahoo!, Yahoo!Mail has been my only mail, um, thingy, (the program through which I recieve my mail - server? client? something like that) for years and I need to know if violations (not just one, obviously) can put that at risk.

At the very least, does anyone even know where to begin to look for this information? It's not in the CG or the Terms of Service (well, that says they can terminate my account at any time, but clearly they don't do that willy-nilly, as the advertizers wouldn't much like having no one to advertize to!) But WHERE?

  • Are the advertisements on the left side of the screen new?

I remember wondering how Yahoo! could afford this. But now there are advertisements. Is that new, or was I just missing them before?

(I have absolutey no problem with a few advertisements; sombody has to pay for this!)

  • What jobs do illegal immigrants do that Americans won't?

I stay out of here because of the unreasoning hatred that fills the topic. But I've come up with a few, and I wonder how many others you can think of.

Spraying herbicides and pesticides without protection.

Demolition of old buildings filled with lead and asbestos, and carrying off the debris without a mask.

Painting and sand blasting and other construction work without protection.

In fact, any job that it would be illegal to perform without OSHA-approved protection is commonly handed off to people who don't understand the language well enough to realize that they are putting their lives at risk. They aren't "real" people, are they? That seems to be the thinking, at any rate.

    Any others?

  • Agonizing pain and death, or nausea and baldness-which would you choose?

In a lot of answers (and questions) I hear about how AWFUL cancer treatments are. I don't usually hear it from people who have actually experienced them, but from someone who knows someone who said . . . These posters are often advising a terrified person, who knows someone who knows someone who said . . .

Now I know that reactions to treatments vary, and that some reactions might be pretty awful, even deadly. But I've known hundreds of cancer patients, including my mother, father, sister, brother, myelf and my son. While some of them died, very few of them who had treatment thought it wasn't worth it for the chance to live.

And the USUAL reactions I've seen are fatigue, nausea (treatable with drugs quite often), a tendency to infection, skin problems and baldness. There are certainly other side effects, but really, overall, most cancer patients I've known say they simply aren't that bad.

So why do people insist on telling these stupid stories to newly diagnosed people here?

  • How could I tutor a few kids (or adults, I guess) online?

I think it's something I'd enjoy doing, and I have a lot of time on my hands right now. I don't especially want to get involved with a formal program, but I'm afraid to simply offer here, as the parents would worry that I'm some kind of predator.

I'm not a teacher, but I'm fairly well educated. Due to some health issues, and severe financial limitations, I don't feel as if I'm giving back to society right now, and my brain is my greatest asset, so I think this would be great.

    Is it a pipe dream?

  • "Bad" words. What do you think?

I've seen several questions asking why people must place positive or negative labels on words. These suggest that the shock value of the words is an indication of how "anal" the hearer is. Some even suggest that those who don't want to hear about this f'n thing and that f'n thing are closed-minded and stupid.

I once got a preacher (at some weird encounter group or other, many years ago) to shout the F word over and over, so I'm hardly unfamiliar with the concept.

I'm older now, and quite certain that if all the current cuss words became a standard part of the formal language over night, most young people (and some who are not young, but haven't grown up), would immediately start searching for words to freak out the previous generations, in order to prove to themselves what rebels, and how open-minded, they are! It's a necessary part of becoming an adult to prove that you aren't your parents!

  • Post-mastectomy lymphedema. Any advice?

I began with only one arm (cancer as an infant), so lymphedema in that hand and arm kinda sucks. I also have pretty severe eczema on the hand, which leaves openings for all kinds of nasties to invade. Of course I'll be working with docs, but I'd love to hear your tips, tricks or horror stories. And has anyone had it just "go away?" (This just started in the past week, with an infection that is being treated. I'm having a *real* hard time with it emotionally, but I'll get over that, so be honest.)

  • Where can I buy inexpensive salwar kameez?

And what is the correct plural? Would it be offensive to Indian-born woman for an American to dress like that? (I think I would look nice, and the style looks so comfortable, but still so well-put-together!) Also, what is the name of the pants with tight ankles?
