  • 4.3 (6cyl) I/O marine engine quit on first outing of the season?

I'm having a disagreement with the diagnosis of the cause is on what surely is a catastrophic engine failure. A friends boat 4 years old and low hours was dry docked all winter, proper winterizing is still a big question.

The debate is "What the %@#* Happened!". The boat was put to use for the first time this season recently and ran fine for about 45min then RPMs started to slow down and adding power did not work and the operator shut the engine down. On inspection the oil was milky and motor would no longer turn over. The person using the boat says its just a cracked exhaust manifold. I say its worse than a manifold because of the milky oil. Can a cracked manifold mix water and oil? I said it has to be the block or head. We looked and cant see any cracks. Any ideas where the crack or leak is?

The debate is important because depending on where the damage occurred this could go back on the person responsible for winterizing the boat.

  • outside heat and air pack replace?

I have a 3 ton trane gas heat and air combo pack outside my house. Its 20 years old and had it serviced twice in the last 7 years. Fact: the heating part looks and runs great. I have no AC. The AC side leaked down about 3 years ago. The service guy came out (tried to sell me a new unit) charged it up and it worked great for 3 years. Now when it quit again I just figured it would need another charge, a new guy came out and said he couldn't charge it because the coil was plugged, and said to get a new unit. Im alittle skeptical because every time I have something looked at its "you need a new unit" no matter what. But is there ant way to fix a plugged coil so it will take a charge?

  • Spare power for my boat?

I have a 25ft cabin Cruiser that is perfectly up to spec with marine code as far as the electrical system. I want to add a power system to be able to run a microwave and a TV while not hooked to shore power. Forget adding a generator-too many negatives to list. My idea is I have a small compartment in the cabin down below that is big enough to hold a "Sealed" 12 volt battery with a 2000 watt inverter. If my calculations are correct that will be plenty of power for a weekend of heating quick meals and a couple of hours of TV.

My concern is having the battery and the converter in a confined space that's not very well ventilated. The space is a stair space with the tread that opens from the top and would be open during the powering of Appliances but closed up when not in use.

Does any one see any danger from keeping a sealed battery (Optima) in a confined space?

  • Tax question- I am the executor of an estate?

I have put the estate in a trust within leagle guidlines and dispurse the interest to myself and brother, we are the only beneficaries and I use a CPA each year to keep it all straight. I send my brother a K-1 form each year so he can claim the interest on his taxes.

I just found out that he has not filed taxes in years!

My question is--If my brother gets in trouble wit the IRS can the IRS come back on the trust I set up?

  • Boat Pricing, Not sure what I am looking for.?

What do I need to look for here? This will be the first boat I have owned but I am experienced with smaller water craft.

I want a used model that has a small cabin (air conditioned would be nice) I live near a lake that has access to main rivers and would be using on week ends, will rent a slip on the lake to keep it. I want one that has been maintained but I am pretty good with a wrench too.

A friend said I needed a cuddy cabin crusier. I am hoping to find one I like in the low $20s lower would be better. My question is, is there real hope here or am I going to be finding junk in my price range?

  • How do we tell our friends that we like to be by ourselves without hurting them?

Our friends are always planning a dinner or outing on weekends for me and my wife. We have 3 married couples we are good friends with they all start calling Thursday night. Somtimes my wife and I just want to have no plans and be left alone on a weekend or go on a short trip together with out having to report in on everything we do. They feel bad when we tell them we dont want to do anything with them.
