I am a triathlete, with much experience in the field, which has provided invaluable knowledge into the subject of sports physiology. I plan to study medicine at Gonville and Caius College Cambridge, and specialize in sports medicine and musclo-skeletal therapy or become an orthopedic surgeon.

  • Files disappeared from portable hard drive?

I'm having issues with my Maxtor 1TB hard drive. I've been using it as a back up for data I use at work as well as old uni notes and presentations. However i've started noticing over the past few weeks, some appeared to have gone missing. However it's just the case on my Mac, whenever I view them there some folders have just disappeared.

I know they haven't disappeared off my drive as the drive's storage space hasn't decreased by the amount of the folder (which was several GB so large enough for me to notice the change). I can access the files fine when I connect it to my TV for some reason. Can anyone provide any help to allow me to access from my Macbook again?

  • Does snoring stop you sleeping?

I've basically had trouble getting what I would call a good night's sleep for several years now. However, I can largely date it back to two years ago, when I got my brace.

I have to have a brace because my bottom jaw is too short, and the corrective surgery (which I am getting this December) requires my teeth to be moved forward. However, since January '12, I can largely remember yawning all day from around then, and from September last year I started noticing my sleep is terrible-usually around 3-5 hours maximum, around half what I would normally get.

I've also seen TV programs where people who snore have it largely resolved by using a device in their mouth that brings their bottom jaw forward. I've been told I snore before, and since my teeth have been moved I've been told I really snore.

As I could have it resolved soon (time will tell after my op) I just wanted to ask if snoring could be the cause of my insomnia. I've ruled out a number of other causes-I've tried numerous mattresses and pillows, I haven't had any significant stressful events, I usually wear an eye mask and earplugs (they don't work, and I never needed them before). I've tried reading, non-prescription sleeping pulls, exercise and the like before bed (exercise generally not right before bed) but they don't help.

And if anyone asks why I haven't seen a doctor...I lived in a place where the doctors would dismiss me , because I was a student with my A-levels at the time my sleep troubles started, so they would have put it down to exam stress. As I had virtually no pressure on the exams (because thankfully I had done so well before) I felt no pressure whatsoever.

Many thanks for any response you can give.

  • I can't give two references...?

Ok, i'm applying for a job locally online. I'm 18, and finished my A-levels last year. I'm currently applying for a job (I was busy in the first part of my gap year) and I haven't worked before.

I'm applying for a job online, at it has asked for two references. I contacted my school, they said they had a reference on record-so I assume if I ask two teachers there, they will send the same reference out. I haven't been employed before, so I can't ask any former employers for one. And i can't submit the application form (its an online one) unless I have two. What do i do?

I should also point out that of the teachers I had for my A-levels, I had 3, but I can't contact two of them (they both left...convenient).

  • Joining wmv.001, wmv.002... files together on mac?

    Hi All,

Just spent about an hour trying to join together 5 wmv files together that have been split into wmv.001, wmv.002, wmv.003, wmv.004 and wmv.005. However, every program i try to use (macacha, hjsplit, winrar, Split and concat etc.) doesn't work at all on my mac. Just wondering if anyone has any better programs that i can use as i am pretty annoyed at the moment that nothing is working.

Thanks for any help you can give

  • Help with bulletpoints on Microsoft word please...?

Hi all. Basically, whenever i get past 100 items on microsoft word on a bulletpoint list, from the 100th point i get a huge indent for every item after 100, like when you press tab to indent the a line along a page. Whenever i try to delete it, it just deletes the point. This is really frustrating me as it looks horrible, so any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks again

  • The full requirements for medical school?

Hi all! I am currently set on going to medical school in the near future (i am currently in year 11). I believed that my current plan would work-until i found out that to go to any university to study medicine, you are required to have done a shadowing course, over 2 years, in a medical establishment. Luckily, I have managed to sort this out, as one of my relatives is a nurse at a geriatric home. However, I think there are a few more unexpected suprises-and I would like to know as much as i need to know. I have recently rechecked the internet for anything, but have been unable to find anything at all. Is there anything I am missing? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Here is my current list of things that I have now, or will have by the start of the first term (September 2012):

*GCSE's in French, English language, English literature, Mathematics, Statistics, Biology, Chemisty, Physics, Business studies, Home economics, ICTand Religious studies

*AS and A levels in Biology, Chemisty, Maths and Sports studies (currently considering an AS level in Physics or Psychology, with research done in spare time)

*A completed Bio-Medical Admission's Test and UK Clinical Aptitude Test

*A 2 year shadowing in a Guernsey Geriatric home

    *A first aid qualification

*A works experience placement in a Pharmacy for 1 week

*A hepatitis B full immunisation course, and antibody blood test

*A second works experience placement in a healthcare environment (currently undecided)

*Private research into medicine-escpecially orthopaedics and internal medicine

If anyone can think of anything else I could do to help my application into medical school, please leave an answer. Thank you very much for your help!

PS:The college i intend to apply to is Fitzwilliam college in Cambridge University

  • Name print for tri-suit?

Hi. I am planning to participate in some ITU (International Triathlon Union) triathlon races next year. I am planning to buy a tri-suit to use, but I would like to have my name printed on it, with all the usuall information as well-ITU symbol, Country flag, brand name, country "initials" (eg GBR). How would I be able to do this? I live in Guernsey, so any of you know where I could have my name printed on a tri suit? (Guernsey is the small island in the Channel)

    Thanks very much

  • Becoming a medical specialist in the UK?

*I am planning to go to Cambridge Medical school (Girton College) in the UK. After graduation, I wish to gain a specialist qualification in sports medicine and musculo-skeletal therapy. In the UK, how would this be possible? I cant find any medical specialist schooling facilities. Where would I go for each of the medical specialist groups? (eg opthamology, nephrology, cardiology)

*I am also deciding whether to become an orthopedic surgeon instead. In the US, i know this involves 5 years of training, 4 of which are spent as a registrar. How does the system of becoming an orthopedic surgeon work in England? And how many years, on average, would you be required to work as a registrar to become any type of surgeon?

    Thanks very much!
