I can't give two references...?
Ok, i'm applying for a job locally online. I'm 18, and finished my A-levels last year. I'm currently applying for a job (I was busy in the first part of my gap year) and I haven't worked before.
I'm applying for a job online, at it has asked for two references. I contacted my school, they said they had a reference on record-so I assume if I ask two teachers there, they will send the same reference out. I haven't been employed before, so I can't ask any former employers for one. And i can't submit the application form (its an online one) unless I have two. What do i do?
I should also point out that of the teachers I had for my A-levels, I had 3, but I can't contact two of them (they both left...convenient).
EDIT-my first reference is my personal tutor from school, and I can't really use my subject teachers-for my third subject, I had 3 different teachers over the 2 years, and I don't know where they have gone or whether they would know me well enough to answer questions for a reference.
I did some works experience at school, but is was mainly shadowing. My closest works experience would be the stuff I did 4 years ago-as it was for one week, I doubt the person remembers me. (I applied for a job a year later and they didn't remember me). I also don't visit my GP at all (only once in the past 7 or so years...i don't get ill, and when i do, I don't moan much)
Still stumpted...but thanks for all your suggestions. As its an application form and I have to fill in boxes for a second, I doubt it would be a good idea if I said N/A for them...would it?

The Head Teacher/Principal of your School - a lot of employers will be suspicious if the school sends 2 references - and your GP.

A couple of ideas for you:
- can you ask your personal tutor in addition to a subject tutor? You personal tutor is more likely to write a personal review rather than use the on record version.
- did you do any work experience or placement as part of your A-levels? If so can you ask the supervisor there.
- failing all else a personal reference is better than nothing. They can at least provide a 'character witness'. Have you ever done any voluntary work, or been involved in any clubs? A youth leader would add a bit more weight to a reference than just your neighbour...

Think of your parents friends then - someone with 'standing' in the community who has seen you grown up - local counciller, policeman, nurse/doctor, company director - you get the picture? ITs basically a personal reference from someone who has known you for some years.
