  • Why do some chapters in books start with all capital letters?

For example: "THEY AROSE BEFORE DAWN the next day."

  • How Should I Deal With Ongoing Dog Tick Problem?

I have two small dogs and they both starting getting ticks recently. I think this is happening when they go in the back yard. I keep having to remove the ticks and using tick solutions. I've had one of the dogs for 9 years and this has never been an issue before. Do I need to start looking into some kind of repellent to place in the back yard?

  • Are there billing companies for non-medical companies?

I have a few rental properties and I am interested in finding a service provider that will send monthly statements to my tenants, accept online or mailed in checks, keep track of amounts owed, and possibly refer overdue payments to a collection agency or handle it inhouse.

  • Why is it that every other living being can give birth unassisted except for humans?

It seems strange that something so normal as giving birth requires highly trained experts who presumably did not exist thousands of years ago.

  • Build your own server or buy one?

I have a decent computer that I can use as a server to practice for my various tech certifications and I'd like an opinion other than my own on this topic. Would there be much benefit to buying an OEM server vs using my desktop? The desktop in question is an optiplex 790 with 8gb of RAM, i5 3.1Ghz.

The only drawbacks I can think of is that it is small form factor and only has a 250GB hard drive. The other issue is that it doesn't have a remote console feature similar to HP ilo, dell DRAC or IBM RSA. I'm currently using this as my primary computer and if I used it as a server, I would have to buy a cheap monitor for it and/or look into whether dell sells a DRAC card that I can install and also consider buying a RAID enclosure to attach to the PC or a NAS device to attach to the network.

Considering all these potential extras that I would need, I'm wondering if it makes sense to go for an entry-level OEM server from dell which at the time of this writing, prices start at $400, similar with HP as well.

  • Can someone help me with my DIY residential solar project?

I'm new to the topic of renewable energy with solar panels. I've been doing some research and I think I have a general idea of what is required in a DIY scenario. However, most of the guides have very limited information regarding the use of an enclosure, box, etc. The information that I have found usually points to some home-made enclosure or leaving the batteries exposed. I'd rather not do that if possible.

The closest I have gotten is the Xantrex PH-1800, but it is not officially offered to the general public, so their website does not have any documentation posted on this. Here is some info on my scenario and the type of system I'd like to set up:

    Portable:

I live in a house with plenty of space in the yard, and a spare bedroom, however, I don't plan on living here for much longer, so I'd like a small enough system that can be moved to the next house (possibly apartment) I move to.

Here's a picture of one that I found, although again, this one is only sold in bulk:

    http://image.made-in-china.com/6f3j00lCf%E2%80%A6

I'd like the container to allow for battery replacement. If it's a small container/enclosure, I'd like for it to be scalable so that I can add more batteries down the line if need be. The xantrex enclosure seems to offer that feature, but I'm not sure if that might be too advanced for me. I have a strong tech background, but limited electrical.

    Scalable:

To begin with, I would like to simply power just an AC for 4hrs that uses 600 watts. If I'm calculating this right, then I would need 6 deep marine cycle batteries so that I don't drain them past 50%. I would also need an inverter rated at 600watt minimum.

Going back to the enclosure, ideally, the enclosure would have hookups that allow for adding/removing batteries without changing the solar panels. If the charging speed slows down, that's not a big deal for my scenario. Is there a such thing out there?

These requirements are not set in stone, so if I missed anything, feel free to subsititute numbers where necessary. The most important feature I'm interested in is scalability so that I don't have to throw away components down the line. I'd rather buy a 1000watt inverter now even if I would only use 600watts, assuming this doesn't produce another inefficiency. If it does, please let me know.

  • Can someone offer advice on buying or creating a solar powered backup system that has small solar panels?

I'm interested in a solar charging system that would be used as a backup power source. The speed with which it takes to charge is not really a big deal, the bare minimum would be enough. I would prefer to have a system that charges slow, takes up less space with regards to the solar panels and offers enough capacity to run a large appliance such as an air conditioner for example for several hours.

I haven't had much luck finding a commercially available solution that meets these requiremetns, so I'm guessing I may have to go the DYI route.

Can anyone offer some advice/guidance on how to proceed? Also, one other question. If given enough time, would pretty much any size panel eventually charge a battery?

  • Help with Paragraph in my book?

I'm reading a book on C# and I'm having a hard time understanding the paragraph below. It says that a malicious programmer could change a public value, but once code is compiled how is this even possible unless the programmer had access to the code used to compile the program, in which case the programmer could do more damage than just modify a value:

"Up to now, the FailSoftArray class simply

used a public integer field called Length for this purpose. This is not good practice, though,

because it allows Length to be set to some value other than the length of the fail-soft array.

(For example, a malicious programmer could intentionally corrupt its value.)"

  • What happens when blood banks do not get enough donations?

I always see signs from the red cross saying that urgent need for blood donations is needed. Is this an exaggeration? If not, are there any examples where lots of people have died due to insufficient blood donations? Any articles or reference material would be great. Thanks for checking out my post!

  • Why do companies outsouce their IT support?

I have often been told that it is to "save money", but I don't understand how that could be possible. The company I work for bills me out at $100/hr in a contract that has been in place for around 14yrs. I get paid $20/hr with zero benefits. Other than my 40hrs of labor, this customer does not get any other type of additional services, etc. I also pretty much never interact with my direct employer other than a timesheet. This has been the same type of scenario with every other outsourced IT company that I've worked for and this is a similar experience for other people I know in this industry. How does company A save money by paying 100-125/hr to an outsourced IT company which in turn, does nothing more than to pay the employee $20/hr??? Again, zero benefits.

  • If I donate money and it doesn't go to the charity does that still count as a good deed?

I've been taking only surveys that give me the option of cash or donate it to a charity. I have no way of knowing if they're actually giving the money to the charity. Would it be more responsible to just take the cash and then give it directly to the charity? If it did this, then the amount would be lower, but I will know for sure that they're getting it.

  • Which is a better choice?

If you had to pick one of the following options, which do you think is better?

    1. Buy a regular car for say $20,000 and have $50,000 left over for as many vacations as you could squeeze out of it.

    or

    2. Buy a $70,000 car and not take a vacation.

Assume that for the 1st choice you would work through your vacation days in order to afford that nice car.

Assume for this example that you work schedule allows you to take a large amount of paid days off for the 2nd choice.
