I'm directing a scene for class with a couple that is in conflict from the beginning of the play in which they appear, and want my actors to get a feeling for what their "normal" relationship is like. I think a quick-and-dirty way to do this (we have very limited rehearsal time, too much so to do the improv work I'd like) would be to have them read a scene or two together in character where the people were still very much in love, and just enjoying each other.

(My scene is for two men, but I'm open to looking at scenes for a man and woman and seeing if I can shuffle pronouns or a few lines to make it work.)

So, can you remember any scenes from plays, movies, etc. where a couple was spending time together happily and peacefully?

I am trying to find sheet music or a recording for this song, written by Mary Hale Woolsey. I can find the lyrics, but I can't find the tune anywhere! There is a piece of the song in a play I'm working on, and it's very important that I figure out how it goes.

So, if you could link me somewhere, or even record yourself singing it, that would be wonderful! The part of the song I'm looking for, specifically, is this one:

"I have a garden, a secret garden where thoughts like flowers grow day by day. 'Tis I must choose them and tend and use them and cast all wrong ones like weeds away."

I'm working on a song for auditions, and I love it; I connect to the character really well, it isn't at all overdone, and it shows off my voice well...or it would, if it wasn't for this one note.

There is a bridge section where I have to sing the word "chance" on a C (the one above middle C; I don't know the number), and then in the last verse I sing the word "mile" on the same note. With "mile," I can mix it and get a nice, powerful sound, but on "chance," I can't; I can hit it, but I can't keep the pitch, and it sounds ridiculous to have one note in my head voice when everything else is my chest voice or mixed.

Does anyone have any thoughts? Is there something I might be doing wrong, technically? Is there a way to modify the vowel in "chance" so I can hold it that won't sound ridiculous?

When I "grow up," I want to be a drama therapist (it's like art therapy or dance therapy, but with theatre), specifically working with adolescents. I've also always wanted to have the opportunity to work in a group home for middle or high-school age kids (I really enjoy that age group, and feel like they get underestimated in a big way), and it's looking like I'll have a few years after my undergrad and before getting licensed to pursue that.

When I'm ready to look for a position, I'll be 22 with B.A.s in Theatre Arts and Psychology, and two years of working as a telephone counsellor and sexual assault victim advocate under my belt. I love the age range, but I'm worldly enough to have realistic expectations. (I know it'll be hard, but also rewarding.)

What sorts of qualifications do group homes look for in their general staff? Is there any experience I can be gaining now (I'm 20, and halfway through both degrees) to make my application more attractive?

Several years ago, I played on a forum and LOVED it. I've tried sporadically to find one again, but everything I stumble across is very dead or has a backstory that's impossible to keep up with. How do you find a roleplaying forum? (Preferably one that's just writing, without "canon" characters to make things difficult.) I mean, is there a databast somewhere, or do you all know of anywhere to check out?

When I was much younger, in my early teens, I had some peppermint schnopps (my dad let me try it, about a shot's worth) and I had an allergic reaction - I didn't feel weird, but I broke out in hives and had to take Benadryl. Ever since, I'm paranoid that I'm going to have a bad reaction to other liquors. When I drink, if I don't go very, very slowly, my nose and the mask of my face start to tingle and go a bit numb. (This doesn't happen with beer or wine.)

I don't drink to get drunk, I never have, but there are a whole host of drinks I would love to try if it seemed that this was a fairly normal response and not the beginnings of an allergic reaction. The doctor's suggestion, when I inquired, was to either not drink at all or just try things and see what happens, but I would like some opinions before picking an option.

My friends and I keep coming up with words that sound like what they mean (twitterpated, phlegm, etc.) I KNOW there's a word for it, and it isn't onomatopoeia. What is it?

I'm pretty good with dialects, I just don't happen to be super familiar with this one. I've read up on it here and there online, and I've seen a few movies with characters who have South Boston accents, but I'm having a really hard time finding women with that accent to learn from.

So, do you know of any resources to help me develop the dialect? Are there any traps I need to be particularly careful about falling into? Do you know of any movies or television shows that prominantly feature women with a South Boston accent?

I'm applying for professional summer work this year. In addition to acting auditions, I'm going to a sort of open job fair for educational and technical theatre opportunities (so, teaching classes, running boards, etc.)

I've only really gotten involved in technical theatre this past year, so I don't have twenty tons of experience, and what I do have is very varied. I'm not sure how to lump it all into a resume. (I have some directing experience, some true technical experience - boards, run crew, etc. - and some teaching experience, but only two or three things in each category.)

So, my questions:

- Should I just make three separate headings?

- Should I include directing and teaching experience, since those sorts of jobs are a part of the job fair, or make two separate resumes?

- Can I include other relevant information - clerical skills, for example - that would make me useful to companies, or should that go somewhere else?

- If I'm not clear on what to call a position, or my role was more extensive than the position title implies, is it okay to provide a (very brief) explanation, like in a business resume?

There are a million resources out there for acting or business resumes, but this is a funny middle ground.

I've been saving a percentage of my income forever, planning to donate it to an organisation that provides support and resources to GLBTQ teens and young adults, specifically those who live in homes and communities that are not supportive or are outright hostile towards their gender or sexual identities. Considering the (proportionally) astronomical suicide rate of GLBTQ teens and young adults, I think it's incredibly important to get the word out, to tell them that who they are is absolutely okay, and provide them with resources to deal with life, wherever they find it. I know there are organisations that help with this kind of thing, and I've been researching vigorously, but, honestly, there are just so many it makes your head spin. I'm a student, and don't have a ton to give, so I want to make sure to find somewhere that uses their resources wisely and effectively. (Obviously, I do what I can as an ally on a daily basis, but bigger organisations are infinitely more qualified than I for networking on that scale, and I want to help a bit.)

So, are you familiar with any organisations either aimed at helping GLBTQ youth, or who help as part of their overall mission? Who have you found to be the most effective? Is there anywhere you find particularly ineffective?

My school is doing a big name musical next year, and there is really only one role I could possibly play, aside from the ensemble. I'm right physically, and I have the voice for it, but it isn't where I "usually" sing (I'm a soprano, and it goes down to G3, but I have it), so I want to make sure to choose audition material that showcases that part of my voice to advantage.

How do you find songs with specific characteristics, (in this case, lower and melodic)? I have "Loving You" from Passions, which goes down to G3, but Sondheim is an audition no-no, and it's a little dark for the role. Are there any web sites where you can sift through songs or roles any more specifically than by general vocal part? Are there any shows that you know, off the top of your head, that might have songs to fit these characteristics? Can you recommend a better way to look for material?

We have a few scores in our library, but most are overdone, and I don't have the resources to buy reams of sheet music in hopes that something will fit.

I've always been told I'm a soprano, and have, for the most part, trained as one, though several of my trustiest audition pieces are actually mezzo songs. (Physically, I am a character actress, and they just don't make many soprano roles for my kind. Since I can sing lower, I do.)

My range goes several notes below middle C, and I have a good low belt. Can I include that on my resume somehow? I've seen some people say "soprano with low belt" as a vocal range. Is that okay to put? Is there a better way to get the same information across?

I'm directing a "10-minute" play for my final Directing class project. Auditions are Monday, which means I'll be working with actors before I know it. I'm not too worried about the process of the actual show, but I have no idea what kind of warm-ups you can do with a cast of three; I've only been in a show that small once before, and it was very different from this one. Can anyone recommend physical and vocal warm-ups, preferably some sort of game or exercise, that I can use with my cast? Websites are great, too.

A community theatre near my house is doing RENT over my Christmas break, and the auditions are coming up soon. I have no idea what to do.

I’m a soprano with a strong low belt. The theatre asks that you audition with a song from the show, or in a similar style. Here’s the thing: I won’t get cast in a lead female role. I just don’t look like any of the parts. Would it hurt my chances of getting any part if I auditioned with a song from a character I could never be cast as? (I wouldn’t want to audition with a song from the ensemble, because they aren’t written for a single person, so aren’t designed with pursuing a goal in mind.) My other option is to sing a song I know from a pop-style show. It’s a touch traditional for RENT, but it shows off my belt, voice, and diction nicely, and I can act the heck out of it.

What do you think? Do exactly as asked, even if that means learning a new song two weeks before the audition, or veer off the path a touch and do something I know I’m good at? Any additional tips or song suggestions?
