  • Should we do away with cars?

Wreckless drivers have caused so many death and suffering to other people. Should we do away with cars, since if there weren't any cars, these things wouldn't happen like that?

(Does this kind of reasoning sound familiar?)

  • A few questions about my rats...?

My wife and i bought a pair of male rats 1.5 months ago and i've got a few questions.

First of all, the rats are finally used to us. We have a little area between our bedroom and living room which, when we close all the doors, becomes a 1.5 X 1.5 m area where we let them out of their cage to run and play around. And over there they are totally ok with us, they climb all over us, etc.

The thing is, as soon as we let them out of the cage in our bedroom (where their cage is located) which is quite big and has plenty of places where they can hide (under the bed or cupboard) it is almost impossible to get them back in the cage (took us 2 days once). They become very skittish and hide all the time.

It's weird, it's like they're a completely different rat when they are in the big area. In the small area they seem fine, in the big room they hide whenever a noise is made.

Should we just play with them in the small area and not let them out in the big one?

Also another thing - they only like being touched and petted when they are really tired and about to sleep. They also hate being picked up (it's almost impossible). Is that normal? Is it because they are young? What should i do to make them more used to being picked up?

One of them seems to be more ok with being picked up than the other one.

    Thanks

  • Why such a different treatment?

How come when an atheist makes a claim that is not supported by research (basically he/she just pulled it out of his/her %£$&), fellow atheists rarelly challenge that person, yet a christian is treated differently?

    Example:

"The vast majority of biblical scholars within the last 100 years discredit big parts of the bible, and deny the divinity of Jesus"

I've spent enough research in that field to know that it is not true. Yes, there are biblical scholars that do that, but it is NOT the vast majority.

Other examples and statistics they like to use:

"The majority of academia/intelectuals/scientists are atheist."

    etc.

I tend to challenge both a christian or an atheist when i hear something that i think doesn't make sense. On certain things i can agree with an atheist, and yet dissagree with a christian. Anything else would be hypocricy, right? Why such polarity?

  • Is Anthony Flew no longer a great thinker?

Since he went from atheism to deism?

Someone here said that most great thinkers in this world are atheists (which is a big pile of BS).

Anthony Flew was greatly respected for his rational thinking by his fellow atheists before he changed his mind.

Does this mean now that he got half of his brain surgically removed (since according to some you need to be stupid to think that there is a God)?

  • Why can i only raise my right eyebrow separately?

I can either raise both at the same time, or just the right one. But i cannot raise just the left one. Why is that? Are the muscles on the left side different from the right one, or is it just a matter of 'teaching' the muscles what to do?

  • Would you speak your mind, or keep it to yourself?

I spoke to an old woman who was telling me how she was beside her husband's bed when he was dying, and although it was difficult for her, she was telling him to go ahead, because his mom is waiting for him (on the other side).

Although i do not believe in the immortality of soul, i didn't tell her anything then, because it was something that kept her going and meant a lot for her.

As an atheist, would you just nod your head when she's telling you this or would you tell her: Sorry ma'am but there's no God or soul...too bad

    What would you do?

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm Christian btw, but i personally believe that the doctrine of the immortality of the soul is not biblical but came from neoplatonism (and no, i don't need you to paste me a list of verses, i'm educated theologically, and have heard them all...)

  • When you ask for 'evidence', what exactly do you need?

Do you want us to bring you a 'piece' of God?

I thought science long ago distanced itself from the teaching that if you just collect enough 'facts' you will get an accurate, objective representation of reality.

The problem is not evidence, but the interpretation of it. Different people will view evidence in a different way. Some may see many things in this life and world and see it as evidence FOR God, some may see it as evidence AGAINST God. Our interpretation of it is already worldview influenced.

So, since science has distanced itself from Naive Realism, why don't you?

  • Believing in God is the same as believing in santa, the tooth fairy, etc....oh really?

I'm tired of some atheists out there who keep saying that belief in God is the same as believing in santa, the tooth fairy, unicorns, etc.

Then how come you can't find a sane grown up person still believing in santa, and yet there's a few billion theists out there, many of whom are renowned scholars, scientists, writers, philosophers, etc.

I know that many people believing in God doesn't make it true, but you saying things like that just shows your ignorance and rudeness towards many people with a different worldview than yours.

I don't mind an atheist telling me that he just can't believe in God because it doesn't make sense to him, and that's fine - i could still sit down and have a normal conversation with him about other things (without having to shove my beliefs down his throat). Why is it so hard to do that?

  • When people 'throw around' the words 'scientific fact', do they actually know what they are?

A scientific fact is something that is objective and verifiable - once it's verified, it is used to form a scientific theory. Example: Objects stick to the earth is a fact - and out of that the theory of gravity is constructed.

People here seem to use it all over the place. Someone asked: Can you quote at least 10 things from the Holy Bible that can be proven scientifically as facts?

A claim regarding the past cannot be 'scientifically proven' as fact (since history cannot be repeated in a lab), but can be more or less plausible given the evidence (which is raw information ready to be processed).

People just try to sound smart by saying things like: we use scientific facts, while you only use faith. Quite a 'black and white' picture that is...

  • Have we forgotten that it's actual real people that are behind the pixels on your monitor?

Whether you're a theist or an atheist, a belief system (or a worldview - since atheists don't like to be associated with the word 'belief') is something that is not just a matter of brain, but also a matter of heart - we are not purely logical beings.

I am all for a good discussion between different worldviews, but why do we often need to bash each other like that? If philosophers in the past few thousand years couldn't agree upon issues regarding truth, what makes you think you are so great that you can bash other people's views like that?

Remember, people (sometimes trolls) are behind the avatars and user names.

  • Isn't that a bit 'oxymoronic'?

There are so many examples where a hardcore right wing Christian would be so loud and proud about being pro-life - trying to save as many fetuses as possible - but at the same time loudly and proudly cheering for war. Isn't that a bit oxymoronic? Shouldn't 'pro-life' cover all shapes of 'killing'?

I always thought that every good christian would oppose war (especially if it doesn't make sense), and only after i actually met a few American Christians i realized that i am deadly wrong. Why be so protective of fetuses, and yet not care about thousands of lives (of both American soldiers and Iraqi people).

I once heard a preacher preach how the war in Iraq was such a good thing because it opened up the door for evangelism in the middle-east. I almost vomited when i heard that. What is wrong with some people?

    (I'm a Christian btw)

  • Are there any American Christians here who are not republican?

I'm a christian living in the UK, and i've been to the States twice (i'm married to an American). Also, the university i attend here is Christian and quite international, so we get a lot of Americans there.

I am genuinely interested if there are any that are democrats (blasphemy!!! lol), because so far i only met one.

I'm asking this because i'm quite appalled at some things. Last year during the elections, i had a conversation with an American girl and i was telling her why i would vote for Obama if i were American, and she said: "But i thought we (Christians) are supposed to vote republican" I idn't know if i was supposed to laugh or cry to that statement.

  • What alternative exercise can i give my hamster?

My hamster hates it in his ball. Evey time i put him in, he starts scratching and wants to go out. And as far as i can tell he isn't using his wheel too much (not sure if he knows how, or is maybe too big for the one we have). What other kind of exercise things can i give him? I heard it's bad if they don't get some exercise.

The worst thing is that he's hyper at the time when we're asleep, so we can't let him out of the cage without supervision.

  • Any atheists here that were present at the Obama inauguration?

If yes, did it bother you that there were so many religious elements (like the long prayer and so on...)?

What did it make you feel like?

  • Has anyone read 'Darwin's Black Box'?

I haven't read it, so I'm asking for genuine opinions of those who have read it. What is his main thesis, and do his arguments hold any water?

I've read in a review that: 'Michael Behe is not a creationist. He believes in the scientific method, and he does not look to religious dogma for answers to these questions.' Is this true?
