From a space-time standpoint, does "NOW" exist?
I was taught to see time as a football field laid out before me and I'm on the 50 yard line. All of the past to my left and all the future to my right. Both Past and future already exists and its only a trick of human perception that I experience a "now".
I'm curious if that is still the common perception, albeit over-simplified. From a space-time stand point; from a string theory stand point, does "NOW" exist?
I got this idea yesterday and I can't shake it. I think that "NOW" is real. But not only that; NOW is actually the edge of the universe. Tomorrow is outside the universe. I've always known that there is no edge of the universe that you could get to by flying x many billions of light years. No matter how far you went that way, whatever you find would still simply be a part of this universe. The very notion that we aren't submerged in the middle of this huge thing but that we are riding through time on the crest of a wave or time bubble at the very edge of the universe, well, its out there I grant you.
BUT think about this: If I'm right, there could be no future time travel. All you could do is put yourself into a kind of suspended animation while you literally wait for the future to occur. And doesn't that kind of describe what Einstein said about not being able to travel faster than the speed of light?
I'm not going to say that a wormhole couldn't exist but I'm more inclined to think that if one did exist, it would be an exit of this universe rather than a potential transit to another point in the past of future of this universe.
So I really just wanted to get some feedback.
5 AnswersAstronomy & Space8 years agoWhy does my boyfriend over-react just because I disagree with him?
We've had some awful arguments over this and I don't understand why. He acts as though if I disagree with him, that I have somehow disrespected him. I say, "well let's just agree to disagree." but he wont let it go until he gets me mad. He'll pick pick pick at it all the while telling me that I'm the one who can't drop it. We've gone through this 5 or 6 times. Usually they end with him sulking.
Later, I go and look the thing up online and find out whether I'm right or wrong. If I'm wrong, I tell him so. Because I don't have a problem being wrong.
I'd like for him to see that he has a bigger problem that me thinking I know everything. Yeah, ok, I'm a know-it-all but I'm not smug or condescending about it. And if somebody can prove to me I'm wrong, fine; I've just learned something I didn't know. I'm cool with that. But if I should suggest that I think maybe he's using that word incorrectly, a big argument will inevitably be the result no matter how politely or gently I try to present it.
I'm beside myself as to what to do about it. Last time, I WAS wrong and so later on when I tried to admit I was wrong and he was right, he started the argument all over again. As if I had personally attacked his credibility.
In some ways, it seems like he equates me disagreeing with him to me not believing him. I don't know how to deal with him when he gets this way. And I don't know if we can continue as a couple.
2 AnswersLesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender8 years agoDoes "Windchill" mean ANYTHING when it comes to water freezing?
I've been wondering if the water in my automobile radiator (yes water, I had a bad leak and had to refill with plain water) ... if that water could freeze because of wind moving through the radiator might make it colder than the normal air temperature? I've always assumed that wind chill is a perceptual thing about moisture on human skin and how fast that moisture evaporates. But then again, isn't that how a radiator works? exchanging more heat when the air moves more quickly... I don't know.
So if the air temperature is reported to be 35 degrees F and I jump in my car that's been sitting in the cold all night and I head off down the highway at 65 miles per hour, could the temperature in the radiator drop below freezing before the car heats the water enough.
Or is the concept of "Wind Chill" irrelevant to my radiator?
2 AnswersPhysics8 years agoWhy does the breakdown of realtivity at the center of a black hole seem to disprove Einstein's theory?
I just sat through an hour long show on the science channel and heard a claim that seems silly to me. It said that since Einstein's equations seem to break down at the center of a black hole, that means there's some flaw or undiscovered mistake. I am floored by this notion; not that Einstein couldn't have been mistaken, but that anyone would expect ANY laws of physics that govern normal space & time to apply at the center of a black hole. I mean, we're talking about space time so bent it has literally stepped out of the way... The space isn't here anymore. How can we expect the laws of physics to apply when there is no space there anymore. The SPACE is somewhen else. Its not there anymore. Physics is irrelevant if the space/time no longer exists. I would expect any and every equation that described physics in normal space time to fail at that point. Every equation.
Now, if we could go back in time to just before the black hole formed, then yeah ok, try your equations there. But once the hole has formed, time stops inside the event horizon. And nearby space begins to fall in. Thirty years later, you can stand outside the black hole and there's still the effect of gravity on the neighboring space time, but that space inside the black hole simply doesn't exist anymore. That space is now thirty years ago. That's why there's a black hole!!!

1 AnswerOther - Television1 decade agoCan a virus lock your files?
Someone told me he had been attacked but some kind of virus that LOCKED many of his files to such a point the computer was no longer bootable. This guy seemed a little paranoid to me. He believed it was a personal attack.
I was just curious if such a virus exists and can infect you remotely over wifi?
4 AnswersSecurity1 decade agoWhat Windows XP file configures all the drivers?
I'm trying to move a working hard drive to a different old PC (a dell 8100) and something in the drivers is preventing the PC from booting all the way, even into safe mode. Some driver is conflicting with the other system. Even in safe mode, it stops immedialtely after loading agp440.sys if that means anything to you. Both systems used AGP graphics cards but they are not similar types or brands of cards.
I installed a second drive and the same version of Windows XP so I have a working install that is bootable and from it I can read all the files from the drive that wont boot. But Ideally, I want to fix the old drive so it will boot.
What file in Windows XP loads all the dirvers? I am thinking to copy system.ini from the new install that does boot over the same file on the old drive. My thinking is that it will re-direct it to drivers that wont conflict. But I don't really know if that is the correct file or the only file.
This is my nieces computer and she has a lot of apps installed on the old drive. That's why its important to get the old drive to boot again.
1 AnswerSoftware1 decade agoVelocity after free falling 10 feet?
I remember these formulas after free falling for x many seconds, but lets say I want to know the velocity of an object after it has free fallen 10 feet or 20 feet. And if I understand it correctly, the answer should be the same regardless of the mass and I'm making no allowance for wind resistance.
2 AnswersPhysics1 decade agoWhat does it mean: "Gishanged"?
A friend, now in his late 60's once told me of an expression his Father used occasionally. He never knew what the expression literally meant. This expression comes from either rural Georgia or possibly Texas. He pronounced it with a southern accent "Gishanged" with the accent on the "hanged". I told him it sounded like a contraction of "I guess your hanged", meaning stuck. He wasn't sure based on his father's use, what it meant.
Is anyone familiar with this expression?

I use MS Internet Explorer 8 and I am seeing warnings more and more often saying that my browser is no longer suported and I need to move to Internet Explorer 8. Is this just a defect in the scripting on these websites?
Tonight a website said I was using IE 6. No. I checked. Its IE 8. There's no doubt about that.
2 AnswersOther - Internet1 decade agoWhat word or phrase means 'group mentality'?
I'm trying to remember a word or phrase that describes an aspect of group or mob mentality. Like the line from Men In Black, K said "No, a person is smart. People are dumb, panicy and dangerous." The concept is that people acting as a group are not as smart nor as kind as any one individual in the group might be. I keep thinking there is another word that goes beyond "mob-mentality" or "group-mentality". I'd also be interested to know if theres a psychological technical term so I can do more research on the topic.
1 AnswerWords & Wordplay1 decade agoWhat do think will really happen to the History Channel in 2012?
I sincerely hope a screaming bunch of disillusioned fifth graders takes the place over and turns it into a channel for rerunning Blues Clues and old cartoons. As a followup question: Do you think we should all call our cable providers and ask to have the History Channel pulled?
8 AnswersAstronomy & Space1 decade agoFrom The Sound Of Music, what is a 'rue-ays' "Eager young lads and rue-ays and cads ..."?
From the movie The Sound Of Music, the song "Sixteen going on Seventeen" contains the lyric "Eager young lads and rogues and cads will offer you food and wine" Except, in the movie the charactor ralph doesn't sing "rogues". What he sings sounds like 'Rue-ays'. I did find a definition of Rogue as vagabond; implying a street person. And I think Rue is french for street. So I'm wondering if he actually sang some french or austrian word rather than rogue.
3 AnswersLyrics1 decade agoDoes Leap Year affect the time of sunset?
I seem to recall years when the the sun was down and the sky was dark by 4pm on the winter solstice; and yet this year at the winter solstice, the sky wasn't completely dark before about 5pm. I was wondering if this was just my imagination or does the sunset at winter solstice actually happen at a different time year by year and is this part of what Leap Year is trying to put back in synch?

3 AnswersAstronomy & Space1 decade agoHow to move files greater than 4 gigabytes from PC to MAC?
Hi all...
Reecently I needed to capture video straight to my PC laptop since my expensive MiniDV camera's tape started getting ALOT of drop outs.
The Win Vista system drive allowed me to capture several files over 4 Gigs each. Now I need to move those files over to my Mac for editing. So far as I know FAT32 is the only PC hard drive format that the Mac can read. Unfortunately, FAT32 doesn't allow files over 4Gigs in size.
Does anyone know another easy way to move files over 4 gigabytes in size from a PC to a Mac. I have several external drives and could format one of them to anything if it was readable by both.
Or is there a simple networking solution? Years ago it was impossible to get a Mac and PC to share files. Is that still true?
4 AnswersDesktops1 decade agoWhy can't Y!Answers block the same question from being asked over and over again?
I don't understand why Yahoo Answers allows the "Will the earth End in 2012" question to be asked over and over several times a day. I don't understand why they allow it to be posed in the Space and Astronomy section.
I don't answer the question. I flag it as innappropriate and state that it's miscatagorized.
4 AnswersYahoo Answers1 decade agoWhy did my PC refused to start up? It's HD activity light just flickered at me.?
On two seperate occasions, I pushed the power button on the front of my PC and got nothing but a faint clicking from the speakers and a faint flickering from the HD activity light. It wasn't normal hard disk activity. There was no whirr of the drives or fans starting up.
Last evening it wouldn't start at all even after leaving it unplugged for a few minutes. This morning, it flickered a coupld of times, but on the thrid attempt, it started up normally and I'm using it now.
The flicker is a consistant 3 or 4 clicks a second. Can anyone tell me if this is a powersupply problem or a motherboard problem?
1 AnswerDesktops1 decade agoHow do I get sound from a Mac Mini?
A friend gave me his Mac Mini for free if I can fix it. The hard drive went bad and Apple wanted too much for him to consider having them fix it.
I have replaced the hard drive, re-formated it and installed Leopard. Its a 1.66GHz Intel core duo mini, now with 1 GB of RAM and a new 320 GB hard drive.
I thought all Mac Mini's came with basic sound support. This unit does have a 1/8th inch mini phone jack with the headphone icon as well as an input. But according to the System Prefs sound page, there's no sound hardware. And I've heard nothing from headphones when plugged into the phones out.
Is it possible I just have a driver missing? Any hardware or software tests I can try would be appreciated.
1 AnswerDesktops1 decade agoDo I need a release to shoot video in a school if I'm being hired by the teacher to shoot it?
A teacher & consultant has approached me about shooting a video about her teaching technique. She wants me to shoot a day in her classroom. If I can't include the kids in the shooting, it will be a very dull video. I know that there will be no broadcast or sale of the footage. She only wants a dvd to use when she's working with other teachers. I will recommend she gets releases from every child's parents.
What I want to know is this: Can I be held liable in any way if she doesn't get releases or am I basically working as her subcontractor?
