  • American law could end my relationship? What would you do?

Hi all. I am in my mid-twenties, I’ve been dating an incredible, beautiful and intelligent woman my age for about 20 months. The thing is, she’s here on a student visa and her job (she just got an offer) is across the country. I have an ideal and lucrative job in my city, in an industry which is basically non-existent in the place she’s moving to. I will basically have to take a pay cut and cross my fingers that I can find anything at all if I were to move and she knows this.

Several of my friends (of various ages and genders) have told me to cut her loose and focus on my career, they say at my age girls are everywhere and I’ll have a midlife crisis if I follow and eventually marry her as I’ve only dated and been with one other girl.

But she expects me to either move or do long distance... she saved me during a time when I was medicating for clinical anxiety over an extended difficult life situation, and if I do not marry her it could potentially leave the door open to her being kicked out of the country if she does not get a temporary green card...

I love her, I could see myself one day marrying her, but I’m not excited to do long distance (for a SECOND time because of an earlier relationship) in the prime of my life... any advice would help...

  • MS International Business, International Relations, or International Economics to go into private sector jobs?

Internationally-focused jobs like finance, supply chain management, etc.

    Is it a bad idea?

  • Need some tough life advice about work/education options from people who've lived it (long sorry)?

My profile: Economics bachelor's student from a non-target school, 3.3 - 3.6 is where my ending GPA will probably be, I've published three studies through a major political/economic think tank where I work in the U.S. (won't name which for anonymity), will probably publish more (one year of bachelor's left), I have international internship experience in economic and financial research (but not big companies)

    Options:

    1. Go to home country (fluent in the language), study finance or international relations in a good school (albeit probably unknown in the U.S.) and likely get a good job through connections (lower pay than a U.S. counterpart)... Come back to the U.S. eventually

    2. Stay in my school and get a master's in finance or international relations (I live in a major city with good employment opportunities but no real connections and I wanna change jobs)

    3. Go to another major city (San Francisco, Chicago, etc.) and try find work and a school I can get into there... study finance or IR...

I don't care about money atm. Long-term goal is to get an MBA, but I need more work experience first. Sorry for all the parentheses. Thanks!

  • Personal questions about morality in the job-hunter's world?

I have the opportunity to join a very large (though not well-known company) in a position that would be pretty advanced for my age (an accountant, I'm a college student).

The company which deals with animals (and is not a financial services firm) has had a past reputation of not taking adequate care of them or even abusing them in the past, such that the USDA has sued them multiple times.

Because the company is relatively unknown, nobody has heard of these cases.

    My two questions are:

    1. Would putting an experience like this on a resume reflect poorly on me, though I had nothing to do with their past?

    2. More importantly, should I feel in any way guilty or am I partially responsible if I did get an offer and stay working with them?

  • Chance of getting into UT Austin, Baylor, UH, or Texas Tech for a MS/PhD (please read)?

    3.30 GPA - Math Major/Econ Minor - UT Dallas - Current Sophomore

    Haven't taken GRE yet.

No relevant work experience to econ (it's hard to find econ jobs without a masters...).

Research experience with an Oxford PhD in economic development, research experience in cliometrics with a PhD candidate from UT Dallas, research experience in economic inequality with a Stanford PhD.

President of the Economic Honor Society, past President of the International Political Economy Club

Past internship as an Econ Analyst in a foreign underdeveloped country, Past internship as a linguist in a foreign underdeveloped country.

    That's all that's relevant really.

  • How good do you think my prospects are for getting into the FBI (in the future)??

Goals by the time I apply (7 years from now):

Earned a double major in Finance and Economics from a fairly well-known state school

Graduated with at least a 3.4 GPA

Fluent in Spanish (I speak it with the same proficiency as English)

Intelligence analyst for the Army (for four years)

Research during college over cartels and crime economics (I don't know if it matters)

Never done drugs and no criminal record

And yes, I know that it would be no James Bond movie.

  • How long does it take to become a Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer? Should I apply to be one (please read)?

I'm getting a bachelors in Economics and Finance in two years.

    I'm a really strong swimmer.

I've been a certified lifeguard before (which is not to say it's as hard as the CG, but it's relevant).

I'm looking for a meaningful way to help others.

I'm looking for a way to fund a graduate school education and make money on the side.

So, do I have the time (given that my GRE will only be valid for five years) to enlist in the Coast Guard and become a Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer? Or would I have to retake the GRE?

  • Accounting or Finance? What are they really like in practice?

Trying to decide between which to pursue (will need CPA or CFA)...

I'm strong in math (taken the hardest math classes at my school) and would really like to go into business.

I enjoy making models (I'm technically an economics major but I have enough free classes to double major) and I'm pretty sociable.

    Thanks!

  • An ex-army friend got it in my head I could travel as an officer if I joined the military after my bachelors?

    Is it true?

I'm assuming this is if I joined Navy or Air Force only..

I'm going to graduate from college with a degree in economics. I still have two years left so I could technically do ROTC in that time no?

  • Generalist Education versus Specialist Education (long sorry)???

I really don't buy into the whole "specialization," aspect of college/life. Yes, it makes us very proficient in a certain field (more than a generalist usually) but doesn't it also make it difficult for us to think in different ways, especially in the later years?

I'm currently an Economics major in college but I have:

    - Taken all of the hardest math classes my school has to offer (It's a stem school)

    - Am taking computer science classes currently (coding seems to be more important every year)

    - Am trying to take the hardest chemistry and organic chemistry classes my school has to offer (with MUCH criticism at my back from friends, family and academic advisers).

    Will I regret these decisions?

I know I can not, but I want to learn everything and understand everything.

Does anyone feel the same way?

  • Generalist Education versus Specialist Education? Help (long I apologize)?

First of all, please pardon any minor writing errors I make... I'm American but I figured I wouldn't get an answer at this hour if I asked on an American server... and it's late.

  • Is there a specific major that will get you promoted more quickly?

For example if four nearly identical candidates were being considered for promotion; one majors in Accounting, another in Economics, another in Biology and another in Finance will their majors be considered???

    Thanks.

  • Help? I have a piece of metal under my skin (read more)??

When I pass a magnet over my elbow I feel it pulling on something (I have already asked multiple people to try and feel too and they agree that it is pulling on something).

I'm almost 100% sure it's a tiny ball in my elbow which I've had since FOREVER and is detached from any bone in my elbow.

I've never had surgery nor have I ever been hit by a metal projectile (like a BB gun).

    What is this?!?!

  • What can I expect if I go to Marine boot camp (read info about me)?

I'll be 22 when I join and I'll have a BS in Economics and a minor in Computer Science (hopefully at least haha).

I'm of pretty average fitness all-around.

Will I be treated differently since I'll be older and since I'll have attended college?

  • I feel insane but I want the spiritual point of view from those of you who are religious.?

I AM NOT RELIGIOUS but I believe I was spoken to by God or at least my subconscious.

He told me to join the military.

Why? I don't know. But it comes to me in a time after I've lost loved ones and therefore have become more apathetic towards my life (NOT the lives of others).

Is he trying to make me do something that will make me value my life again and appreciate it more?

I realize that I sound like an insane and religious nut. I am not. I believe in a God but I have not been to church or opened a religious text in years.
