Why does white noise help me sleep, but a constant alarm sound keeps me up?
To clarify: I was having trouble sleeping a few weeks ago because of a constant, continuous alarm blaring noise that we couldn t stop. But the noise wasn t changing - it was like an airhorn, but making the same constant sound.
So I downloaded a white noise (fan) app on my phone, and was able to fall asleep. I assumed that the way white noise works was that it provided a constant noise to prevent you from being spooked from sudden noises. But the alarm sound wasn t sudden -- it was also constant. So explain like I know nothing: what s the difference?

16 AnswersGlobal Warming6 years agoHow are flu vaccines created, where do the scientists get the data on the flu strain, and why is it different ever year?
I know this is broad, so my main questions are:
From where (e.g. what country) and when do health workers (mainly in the USA) determine the identities and makeup of the flu strains for any given year?
The CDC says the vaccine is less effective this year. Why? Is this a growing issue, or just happened to be this year?
How do they determine what flu strains are the most dangerous?
Please include citations if you can!
1 AnswerInfectious Diseases6 years agoWhat would happen if a rabbit actually ate Trix Cereal?
I'm just curious. You never know, maybe the kids are withholding the cereal from him for a good reason! Hypothetically, if one were to feed Trix cereal to their rabbit, what would happen to it, and why? Wouldn't it be unable to process that much sugar? Explain
6 AnswersZoology8 years agoCan there be a graph for any possible sequence of y-values?
More specifically, if I had the graph points (1, x) and (2, y), then I know that i can always make an equation for a graph that goes through both of these points, for ANY value of x and y (unless x and y are the same value i guess) with, in this case, a y=mx+b equation. [Example: If it was (1,36) and (2, -0.5), there could be an equation set as y = -36.5x + 72.5].
So my question is: If I set up a table of values, with the x-value sequence being 1, 2, 3, and so on, and if I then enter in ANY random value for y next to each of these [for example (1, 14), (2, -185), (3, 0.462), etc.], then is it possible to create an equation, however complex it may be, for any of these sequences? I know I can do it for two points, but can it be done for three? four? infinity? (Not necessarily a y=mx+b equation, but any equation).
Bonus question: IF SO, then could this also be done with randomly selected x-values together with randomly selected y-values?

2 AnswersBiology9 years agoWhat is the highest percentage/number of votes that could lost a U.S. election?
I know that the electoral winner (who becomes president) does not necessarily also win the popular vote. Specifically, if we assume that votes only go toward the Democratic and Republican candidate, what is the highest theoretical possible percentage of votes from U.S. voters that could go for a candidate, whereas that candidate still ends up losing the election due to the electoral college system? And how many votes would that be?
2 AnswersElections9 years agoWas Nineteen Eighty-Four George Orwell's true vision of the year 1984?
I recall reading in the appendix that the book was written as a warning as to what society could become if it did not change. So was it intended to be an exaggeration to induce fright and make a point, or was it what Orwell really believed that the year 1984 would be like for the world?
Bonus question: If Orwell could see the world in today's society, what would he think of it?

I didn't just notice this, but decided to ask about it now. What happens on yahoo answers when you type in a random phrase and after it's submitted, it appears blue with a dotted underline? What does that mean and why is it here?
Thanks

1 AnswerVideo & Online Games10 years agoGood blend of two songs for a camp competition?
Hey everyone, here's the deal.
I go to an overnight summer camp that has a tradition of a 3-day competition between two teams, each of which is half the camp. The competitions range from sports to cheers to a singing contest, which is what i am asking for help about.
On my team we are hoping to mix together two songs to make an awesome performance for the contest. The songs should go together in some way so that they can sort of be sung at the same time (or something different, e.g. singing both choruses at the same time)
For an example, last year, we did a cross between "one day" by matisyahu and "waving flag" by k'naan. That worked very well because the two songs sound similar and went together almost perfectly.
Could anyone give us some advice for two other songs that would work like that?
Thanks
1 AnswerSinging1 decade agoRomeo and Juliet: Education display examples?
Hey everyone,
I have to do a thesis paper on education/evidence of who was educated (or uneducated) in Romeo and Juliet. I just have to find examples in the play where this is shown.
So far I have: The apothecary and his knowledge of medicine.
Gregory and his knowledge of the law (beginning of the play)
The Servingman not being able to read, whereas Romeo could.
If you can find any more, that would be helpful.
Thanks in advance
1 AnswerHomework Help1 decade agoShould I learn guitar or piano?
Hey everyone, I am 16 years old, which is probably a bit late to start learning an instrument, but I just felt like trying it out. I never learned to play an instrument because...eh, I just didn't. So my two main options now are piano and guitar. I was leaning slightly toward piano, since it seemed a bit more useful, but my dad pointed out that the guitar could be taken places (portable). Which should I choose? Thanks in advance
