So I am doing some reading for my classic literature class (stories written before 1400 AD) and I noticed that many of the most powerful women in these stories are cast as antagonistic to the hero. However, I'm not sure why. Is it as simple as "to serve as a warning to women"? I doubt that because back in those times, women weren't usually taught how to read. I was thinking maybe it is the Christian influence, but most of these books were written in Japan, Africa, Greece, etc., places where Christianity really didn't have a huge influence before the 1400's. Why do you think they were in such roles?

I know there is a formula one can use to set the zoom on a copy machine when you want a copy of something, but smaller or larger.

For instance, if you have an 8.5"x11" document that you want to shrink to fit into a CD case (so, 4.75"x9.5"), you can use this formula to figure out what X and Y to set the zoom percentages to.

I've seen others use it. However, I've not been able to find this formula. Does any one out there know it?

This is not about any specific battle/argument/war/etc. I am just wondering this in the general sense. Why fight? Why do we, as a species, feel the need to argue/fight? Over anything? Is it as simple as people's ego's? Or more complex?

I've recently started using the VICE emulator (Commodore 64). I owned a C64 20 years ago & recently discovered these emulators are available. I'm trying out a type-in program I found in one of my old Zzap64 mags. My problem is VICE is a painful reminder of how much programming sucked back then compared to now. I have spent the last 3 days trying different compilers (QBASIC, RapidQ, FreeBASIC, etc). The problem is, no matter which compiler I put it in (including typing it in VICE), it returns different errors in the different compilers. I thought these type-in programs were idiot-proof (granted, I might happen to be a new breed of 'super-idiot'). I am not looking for someone to do this for me, but is there anyone out there who is either 1) experienced and comfortable still with BASIC for Commodores to look at this code and give me suggestions? Or 2) knows of a user-friendly compiler that they have had previous success with in the past (possibly using VICE at the same time)?

I live in a basement apt. of a house and needless to say, the above tenant and I share the water heater. However I shower in the AM and they shower in the PM to avoid problems. I've noticed that the shower stays hot for about 3 minutes, then suddenly gets much colder. Then I turn the heat up, it stays lukewarm for about two minutes before it immediately switches to ice cold, so I turn it up to the hottest setting, only to have tepid water hit me for about 30 seconds before it turns into ice-water. I've tried running the hot water for a few minutes and then giving the water heater 10-15 minutes to start to warm up the tank before I jump in, but it does no good. The weird part is that the tenant above me does not have this problem. I called a plumber who said that I was showering before the water heater had a chance to warm up, as the water in the tank had cooled overnight (thus running the hot water before I shower).

Could someone please tell me what the real issue is with my shower?

I was at a restaurant with some friends last night and two of them began to argue over 'cryptographic digital signatures' and 'RSA public-key cryptography'. I don't know why these terms stuck in my mind, but I wanted to go home and look them up to see exactly what about it made for such a heated discussion. I've since looked both these terms up, but not being a very computer-savy person, I am having the worst time understanding exactly what these two terms are and what the difference is between them is. Can anyone explain, in layman's terms?

Why is it that the knobs on washing machines can only be turned clockwise, while the knobs on dryers work in both directions?

So, I know when one turns 21, they can legally gamble and drink (depending on the location), get married, charged as an adult, etc. But what else can one do that isn't too well known? (i.e. obtain a concealed-carry permit, etc)

For about a year now, I've been having meaningless sex w/people I know. I have a very high sex drive and constantly feel the need to satisfy my urges. It drives me insane, I rarely feel better after, I just feel even more "hungry". Friends whom I have no sexual interest in quickly become "friends with benefits" and I hate it!

My question is this: How does one stop? (Most of you are thinking "Keep your pants on, stupid" & trust me, I've tried) I do it to simply curb my hormones (temporarily), but this just isn't working. I'm tired of it, I don't want to sleep around anymore. I want to be a respectable human and respect other people and hold out for a meaningful relationship, but it's very hard when I am in a situation where sex (no matter how meaningless) is a likely outcome. I realize that I have low self-esteem, otherwise I wouldn't turn to a bunch of faceless strangers on the internet for advice. But what does one do in a situation like this?
