  • How does using a DC motor to charge a battery work?

It makes no logical sense to me.

I understand the principle, but what I don't understand is why it works.

Why does the batter not just start turning the motor? Are there components I'm missing?

I've seen people on Youtube hooking up DC motors to batteries and charging them, but I can't for the life of me see why the battery is not in turn running the motor.

    Can someone explain this please?

  • Is this some form of acne?

I have a skin problem where on my stomach, chest, lower back, thighs and occasionally upper arms, the hairs that grow dont break through the skin.

This sometimes results in little spots, but not always. They are itchy and if scratched the hair comes out within a tiny hard lump. But mostly I'm just covered in little hard points where the hair has curled itself up and can push throught the skin and feels bumpy. If it helps, I'm 30yo and as long as I can remember have always had them, but they used to be just my upper arms and knees. Now they're everywhere.

Does anyone have any idea what this is, and how I can get rid of them. I've noticed they are lesser in number if its been sunny.

I've got a holiday coming up and I want to get in the pool without pretending I'm not self concious about it.

  • Muslims. Do you detest that actions taken in France today?

After the editor of a magazine joked that the guest editor next week was going to be the Prophet Muhammad, the studio was burnt to a crisp. Do the Muslims among us reject this as a pathetic action of a belittling few? Given that the Qur'an tells you to leave blasphemous people as they are, because they will get their comeuppance in the end.

  • What's the difference between a cheap guitar and an expensive one?

For example, I have an Epiphone SG, which was £200. I replaced the strings with slinky's 10's which was about £5, since I was told the stock strings were cheap tat, and they were.

The Gibson (who own Epiphone) SG is £650. They are both set neck, both mahogany, both have grover tuners. I understand that some of this price will be better stock strings, and much more of it will be the pickup's, but other than that (which accounts for about £100 of the price difference) what am I paying that extra £350 for?

  • If the theory of evolution and the Big Bang became theorums, would it actually disprove God?

I'm not talking about what people say the Bible says, or how its interpreted.

Given that the simple concept is that the Universe came from God and that He created all the animals, culminating in us, would either of these theories becoming fact actually disprove the existence of God?

  • Who was the better singer? Michael Jackson? Or Freddie Mercury?

I asked this question in my work and it divided opinion down the middle. Both are regarded as two of the best singers and entertainers of all time, and both have an amazing range.

I like Michael Jackson, but I also like Freddie Mercury, but which is better?

  • Why can't we watch 3D tv through a lenticular sheet?

Just come home from watching Avatar (fantastic movie by the way) and it got me thinking about 3D at home. Turns out you need a 3D Ready TV that can display polarised images for the glasses to work. They are big and cost a heck of a lot. But, a lenticular picture uses two images to give you a 3D picture using a lenticular sheet covered in tiny domes.

Is there any real reason why we cannot have attachable lenticular sheets added to our TVs to view 3D movies in a similar way? Or am I just being far too pragmatic?

  • Athiests, why do you not believe?

I dont mind that you dont believe in God. It has no baring on me or my beliefs, but I'm curious as to why you do not believe in God, or gods.

I'm not looking for daft answers like "Its make believe" or "Its just a story". I'm quite accepting of it being a story. For an example, the Sikh faith is based on Islam and Hinduism.

Buddhism is also has its origins in Hinduism.

Islam has its base in Judaism and Christianity.

Christianity is an extension of Judaism, with Hindu teachings and phylosophy. Judaism has its base laws in Ancient Egypts Book of the Dead. So much so Arkenaten is said to be Moses himself by some.

While all of that is interesting, what I'm curious to know is what it is that you have, or perhaps lack, that stops you from saying you believe? Is it simply because you dont believe the stories? Or because you feel religion causes war? Is the idea of religion why?

Or do you genuinely not have anything inside you that wonders about whats next, and is anyone watching?

  • Why did Blue-Ray win?

Objectively speaking, the Blue-Ray vs HDDVD was VHS vs Betamax all over again.

HDDVD did not have as much storage, but still had storage enough for a full feature HD movie.

    HDDVD was cheaper.

    HDDVD used better software.

HDDVD had the backing of major manufacturers and Studios.

  • Reasonable suspicion?

If you're stuck in the court process because someone thought they had a reasonable suspicion you committed a criminal act, even though, on deeper evaluation of the so-call evidence, there is nothing reasonable about their decision, can I have the charges dropped and seek compensation for false arrest under Artical 5.4 and 5.5 of the Humans Rights Act 1998?

How do I show that there was no Reasonable Suspicion?

  • Why do you bother, athiests?

I want to know why it is that when someone asks a question about religion, that does not revolve around whether or not you believe, a proportion of the athiests in this site are arrogant enough to step in and say "God is a figment of mans imagination".

Does it make you feel better about how much more "realistic" you are?

Or can you not just accept the fact that there are more people in this world that believe in some kind of a higher power than just a chance happening like you do?

Do you find it impossible to comprehend that we dont believe because we have to, or because we need to, but because something within us allows us to.

If any of you can answer me these questions in a way that does not belittle me with your language, or a way that is not rude nor abrupt, then I would be grateful.

I would also like the religious here not to attack athiests either.

  • How long is a day?

Every four years we add a day to february to balence the difference for how long a day should actually be.

I've also heard that every 100 years we take another day off to balence. Is this true?

And if it is, how would we calculate the true length of a day?
