  • I'm a college student under 24 but my parents don't support me; can I file as independent?

I'm a little confused on what precisely qualifies you to file independent for taxes. I'm a college student and I go away for college. I'm 19 and since I'm a freshman, half the year in 2011 I lived at home with my parents. That said, they still didn't support me, at least not fully or even 50% I don't think. I worked and paid my own bills and even paid rent/other utility bills for my parents every so often. But I did live under their roof for "free" while I was in high school.

Now that I go to college, I'm still not supported by my parents. Now, the government basically supports me haha. I have grants, loans, and work study that pays for my tuition, housing, food, everything. My dad hasn't filed his taxes and said that he wouldn't claim me if I wanted to file independent. My question is, am I allowed to file independent or am I, like for FAFSA, still considered dependent?

  • Can someone explain the concept of profit to me (Microeconomics)?

In my class, we were told that profit is equal to the total revenue minus the costs, but this doesn't help me solve one of my homework problems, unless I'm missing something. Can someone please help me out? I don't necessarily need the answer more than I need to understand how to get there.

The demand is Q=6,000-5P and I started off by calculating the unit elasticity (P=600). The next question is: what is the price the company should have charged to maximize its profit given that it only costs them $50 to make additional products?

Could someone please help clarify this? I've already looked up my course reader but it only reiterates that profit is the total revenue minus the cost. Would this mean that 600xQ - 50 is the profit?

  • I don't know how to find the demand curve given this information? Can you help?

The info provided is "Suppose customers have $8,000/wk to spend on donuts."

I don't really understand how that helps find an exact equation to draw the line from, or how to find market equilibrium given that. I have a supply curve I know of. Is it that there is a horizontal line at $8,000? I'm not really sure, and I've reread the chapter 3 times by now. My teacher intentionally gives us harder questions to prepare for exams, but I really can't think of how to derive a curve just with that? Can anyone please help?

I'd be really grateful if you could help out. I'm pretty sure this is supposed to be easy but I'm just not seeing it? Thank you!

  • How does Mead define the self? I'm coming up with conflicting answers? Please help!?

According to Mead, the self is produced by either self-awareness, social experience, or self-image. I'm not sure which, because I thought it was a combination of those answers. But for my exam, you have to choose one. Does anyone know the answer? I'm already going to review but was wondering if anyone knew the answer. Thanks in advance!

  • Please, help--will my mom really do time for this? How long?

She got really out of control after drinking too much last Sunday and as a result the cops were called. She began throwing furniture around the house and at us, and when my dad tried to stop her, she hit him over the head with a coffee mug. The cops came and arrested her, and she's been charged with assault with a deadly weapon: great bodily injury, and two charges of damage including damage to power lines. I get that what she did wasn't right, but when the cops came I figured they were just trying to scare her with the ADW charge (the cops know our family and don't really like us, ha) and that they were basically taking her to jail to sober up. And "great bodily injury" doesn't seem fair because my dad was fine, aside from a bump to the head. But my older sister really thinks that she will do some time for the charges. I don't want my mom to go to jail; besides this, her record is clean. How long can she be sentenced for this?

Please, help. We've never been in this situation before.

  • Will having an F instead of a withdrawn get me rescinded?

So, for my conditions of agreement on my college acceptance, it says I have to turn in my college transcript as well because I took one class there. The thing is, at the beginning of the year I took another class and withdrew because of various reasons. When I called the college, they told me my withdrawal was after their deadline, and I got an F in the class!

I told the college on my application that I withdrew from that course. I wrote an entire essay explaining the reasons for withdrawing. So it isn't as if they don't know I took the class and dropped out--they just don't know that instead of getting a W, I have an F. I have to send them a transcript because I took another course through the same college and got an A, but now I'm worried they'll see the F and kick me out for lying or failing to report it, etc.

  • When I stand up after sleeping, I get really dizzy and can't see?

It happens on and off, but usually, the longer I sleep, the worse it is when I wake up. I wake up, and a few seconds after I stand up, I get really dizzy and my eyesight is momentarily gone. Not exactly gone, more like everything is gray and blurred, like I can faintly see the bathroom mirror but can't make out my face or anything. And I sway a little as I stand and wait for it to pass. I don't think that's normal, but is it something worth going to the doctor for? I've had the dizziness most my life and figured it was because I got up too quickly after waking, but recently it occured to me that I might need to check it out. Any thoughts?

  • How can I make up the cost of college without loans or scholarships?

I was awarded grants and a few scholarships, but am still about $5800 short of tuition. If I get more money in scholarships, they lower my grant award, so I don't think that will work. I already work 30 hours a week, so please don't suggest I get a job. Unfortunately, I pay rent, so it's not feasible to just save up all the money. My mom lives paycheck to paycheck, so she will contribute nothing, though I know she wishes she could. I really don't want to start off freshman year with loans. I'll go to CC if it's a must, but right now I'm just trying to make my dream college work. Any suggestions? Please, and answers will be VERY much appreciated :)

  • Why would UCSD call me? Does that mean I got accepted?

I was working and missed a call from UCSD. I heard that some people are called ahead of time to be told of their acceptances, just wondering if that's true? And if so, why? Does it mean anything?

  • My parents live together but aren't married; CA does not recognize common law? What does this mean for FAFSA?

For FAFSA, what would my parents be? They live together but are not married. I am the adopted child of my father, but he supports my mother and I. Can I use just my mother or should I include my father? And what would their status be?

  • Should I put someone else's vehicles in my name?

I turned 18 a few monthes ago, and now my older sister wants to put some of her vehicles in my name. Right now she just wants to put an ATV in my name because the IRS is after her for skipping last year's taxes. I don't mind helping, but I don't want to adversely afffect anything that has to do with me. I've just turned 18 and all. I also don't want to affect my chances of financial aid for college next year.

Will putting her quad in my name somehow affect me? I'm not sure if I should do it or not.

  • Hypothetically speaking, do you think the gene for supernatural ability would be dominant or recessive?

I know this is a bit strange, and I am aware that supernatural abilities do not exist (hence the hypothetical part), but if they did, and assuming they were passed by genes and not radioactivity, etc., would they more likely be dominant or recessive? Your opinion?

  • Is mentioning drug abuse in my college application a bad idea?? Even if it's not my own...?

For the USC essay, it asks that I "write an essay about an event or experience that helped you learn what is important to you and why it is important". Well, my sister's drug abuse and her running away made me try really hard to succeed and make my parents proud, and in a way, her leaving gave me strong motivation to succeed. Is it bad to mention drug abuse in an essay? For example, would it be inappropriate to mention that she experimented with drugs, escalating from weed to heroin, and that it made her fail high school and lose all her jobs and basically become a bum? Or is this too much?

  • How do you write a tribute? I hardly knew the person?

A teacher died at my school, and as editor-in-chief, I was given the article to write because no one else wanted to do it. I want to make it sound really good, but I really did not know the teacher. How do I even begin? Any tips would be extremely appreciated. Thanks.

  • Question about contacts?

I've always worn glasses when I need to see, but for my job I think it would be much simpler to wear contacts. I wore contacts once before and I HATED them. They irritated my eyes and it took forever to put them in, not to mention they slid around. I'm thinking I just had a bad experience, so I want to try again. Is there any way to make it more comfortable? What is better, one day contacts or two-week ones? And any tips on putting them in?

Answers will be appreciated! Thanks :)

  • What exactly IS non-denim? And where can I find some non-denim pants for a low price?

Please don't say something moronic, like "It's not denim duh!" I'm looking for a real answer. I'm not really sure how to tell apart denim black jeans from non-denim ones, and apparently it's important for work that I wear non-denim. I've looked at the tag for what the pants are made of, but all jeans I have are all made of cotton, so I don't really see exactly what makes it denim. That might be ridiculous or something, but when I went to work they all looked like they were wearing just regular black pants to me, so I'm not exactly sure anymore.

And where could I find some for really cheap? I haven't started work yet so I don't have money. :p

    Real answers are appreciated :)
