  • Describe your experiences as a participant in Walk to Emmaus (a spiritual renewal program)?

A couple of people at my church (United Methodist) have encouraged me to go on an Emmaus Walk. At first, I thought it was just a spiritual retreat weekend, but the more I read about it online, the more it sounds like a cult or something. I'm looking for specific details, good or bad, from people who have participated in this.

Please do NOT give me the answer cut-and-paste from the Upper Room website. I've read all that.

Please do NOT tell me that you don't want to ruin the "surprises." I hate surprises. That's a goofy thing to say and it just makes people sound brainwashed and perpetuates the idea that this is a cult.

What was your experience like? Did you enjoy it? What specifically did you do? Did you want to leave? Would you have been able to leave if you wanted to? If there was an emergency at home, would you have still been reachable? Did you feel controlled or spiritually manipulated? What is with all these weird rituals I've been reading about - did they do any ritualistic or ceremonial things at the Walk you attended? Would you recommend it to others? Why or why not?

  • Do I have "cash handling experience" and what is the best way to describe the experience I have?

A potential employer is wanting to know if I have "cash handling experience." I have never worked a register but I have handled money. I worked a receptionist/assistant job where I manually received payments, mostly in cash. We usually expected payment in the exact amount, so I rarely needed to provide change. I tracked all of our accounts either on paper or occasionally in QuickBooks. I wrote out receipts by hand, and occasionally ran point of sale transactions.

I want to say that yes, I handle cash responsibly, but I don't want to give the mistaken impression that I can work a register or have had to balance cash drawers.

How do I explain my skills professionally and accurately?

    2 AnswersFinancial Services9 years ago
  • What does the classification "professional" mean on a job application?

The question on the application is this: "Please select the category that best describes your skill set/qualifications: Executive/Professional, Support Staff . . ." I am applying for an office job and I'm not sure what the difference between professional and support staff is?

I've seen "professional" as a job category on other stuff, too. Usually used along with managerial, technical, executive, etc. What exactly is "professional?"

I remember years ago at a staff meeting our executive director telling all of us in the education department that we were not "professionals." It didn't go over well. I never did figure out exactly what he meant by that.

  • My friend's 2 year old wants a "cuckoo." Anyone know what she's talking about?

Reposting this from the toddler section -

We think it's a toy or game that she saw a commercial for. We have no idea how to spell it or if she's even pronouncing it right. Any ideas?

    Additional Details

No, no, no to all of you who said it's a bird (I know that). This is a two-year-old repeating a commercial. Aren't there any toys with a name like coo-coo? I don't have TV or watch commercials, so I have no idea.

  • How do I print my Blackberry calendar?

Is there a simple way to print my Blackberry calendar, or save it on the web? I am losing phone service soon and really want to have a hard copy of the calendar. I don't have a home computer, so this needs to be something I can do from the library computer. I tried to sync it with a Google calendar, but none of my appointments showed up on the Google calendar screen, so I must have done something wrong? Or is it not possible to save and print Blackberry's calendar? I have a Blackberry Curve 8530.

  • How do I edit text from a scanned document?

I know there are programs that will "read" the text off of a scanned pdf so that it can be edited. How do I know if our program will do this and how does it work?

My supervisor is constantly giving me example forms that he wants me to type so that we'll have the form in our files - it would be so much easier if I could scan the form and use that instead of typing the whole thing out.

We have Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional, Word Perfect 11, and a Canon Image Runner 3035.

No "free" trials, please. Specific directions would be helpful. Thanks.

  • Do you prefer updated, "politically correct" Christmas carols or the traditional lyrics?

In church today, we sang "Good Christian Men, Rejoice" without the word "men" in it. Men, man, and mankind were taken out of all the Christmas songs. I've also noticed that (in "What Child is This?") the Child is "where ox and lamb are feeding" now instead of "ox and ***," that we're supposed to "bring him praise" instead of "laud," that we ask "and fit us for heaven" instead of "and take us to heaven" (in "Away in a Manger") and even some of the secular songs have been changed -- have you noticed the presents are now under the tree when you're home for Christmas? Anyway, I find these changes to be awkward and unnecessary, but I'm curious, what do you think? Many visitors attend churches around Christmastime. Do these song changes actually make them feel more comfortable?

  • Where can I purchase a simple reptile tank?

I have a cornsnake who is getting kind of big for the 20-gallon-long tank that she is in (and it has a small crack in it, too). I'd like to move her into the next size up, but something with floor space rather than height, since she likes to burrow, not climb. So maybe like 30 x 18 x 13. I need a basic, simple, reptile terrarium with a latching screen top. My local pet store doesn't carry anything like this (they only have small tanks and really fancy tanks). Anyone know where I can find one that isn't too expensive? I'd prefer to order one online or have my pet store order it for me if it's a company that only sells to stores.

  • Why does my yard look worse when it's mowed?

I let my lawn grow into a very overgrown "meadow." The local rabbits and I really loved it, but I don't think my neighbors did. I kept trying to mow it myself, but the yard is really too big for me, especially in those hot summer months (I'm in Texas) to mow myself.

Guilt eventually overcame me. So, I finally hired someone to come and mow it. Now, it looks awful. Brown, patchy, ugly. I really preferred the "weeds" - they were pretty and natural-looking. Why does it look so bad now?

I didn't plant this "lawn." It created itself and keeps growing by itself. I don't have a lot of money to landscape or even to hire a regular lawnmowing service. Any suggestions?

Is it so wrong to prefer the prairie look? And why does it look so terrible after being mowed?

  • Did Jesus ever praise someone for being intelligent?

This is a question for Christians.

True or False: "Jesus never praised individuals for their knowledge or theology."

Please tell me what you think and list a reference, if possible.

I Corinthians 12:8 talks about knowledge as a spiritual gift, but other than that, I cannot think of any passages that praise knowlege. Can you?

  • Why is my telephone doing this?

I never answer my home phone. It is a cordless land-line and I only have one line and one phone in the house. Recently, I have been getting several calls from different people, where the caller leaves a message on my answering machine, "Hello? Hello?" as if they didn't even call me and are instead answering the phone. Why is this happening? Could my phone mysteriously be making calls to random people all by itself? The people who leave these messages don't sound like telemarketers.

  • New preschool teacher looking for tips for teaching twos?

I am starting a new job as a teacher in the two-year-old classroom at a small preschool. I'm looking for tips from other early educators: do's and don't's, favorite activities/stories/games/songs for this age group, things I should be asking the director/other teachers during my first week, things you wish you had done differently or had known sooner, favorite teacher resources -- any other tips or advice. Thanks!

  • Should I accept a low paying job or hold out for something better?

I’ve been unemployed for 2 months and am not eligible for unemployment benefits. The job I’m considering would pay 67% of what I was making at my previous job (drop from $13.39 to $9.00 per hour). It would not be enough money to pay my bills and I would be going into debt in a few months. Even though I have applied to a lot of jobs, I currently have no other job prospects, other than one company who sounded like they were planning to interview me (but the interview is not scheduled yet). The job is somewhat related to my career field and I am able to do the job and would probably enjoy it. Obviously, I need the money (I’ll be desperate in about 2 months), but what I really need is more money – so should I use the time to continue searching for a better job or take what I can right now? If I am given a choice between full-time or part-time, would you choose one over the other?

Also, do you think it’s unethical to accept a job and then continue to keep looking for something better? Especially if the job is something where if you leave it would not only affect the company/management but the clients as well?

  • Single-parent teachers: How do you maintain work-life balance?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the teaching profession for single-parents? I can think of a few myself, but I want to hear from people who have actually done this, especially with young children. Teaching seems to be a pretty demanding profession, so how did/do you make the time to be a good single-parent while pursuing a teaching career?

  • Teachers: How many hours do you work per year?

As a full-time classroom teacher, how many hours do you have to work over the course of a year in order to do your job well? Include teaching, preparation, grading, continuing education, etc.

I've read other Yahoo Answers that indicated teachers work an average of 10-13 hours a day, and often several hours on the weekend. I'm wondering if the "time off" during breaks and summer even things out over the course of the year?

For comparison, let's say the average American works about 1,960 hours per year. (40 hrs. x 52 weeks - 15 paid holidays/vacation days)

Please indicate what you teach and where you're located in your answer.
