  • Why is Jerry Jones the only owner/GM we ever hear about?

Besides a little Robert Kraft here and there in the NFL, there isn't an owner or general manager in sports besides the Steinbrenners and maybe Michael Jordan that you ever hear about on ESPN. Once the bills changed owners that was the last you heard from them.

  • Why do Ohio State fans refer to Michigan as "the school up north" or -ichigan?

I know it's a big game and it has a lot of history, but taking it to the point of not wanting to plague ones tongue with the name of a state? I have relatives who went to UNC and take the long way to see games there because the closest Interstate exit to the school is actually in Durham. Both are real petty in my opinion.

  • Why do Southern Baptists/Evangelicals believe in a literal translation of the Bible?

I'm curious as to where this arose from. Many of the stories, especially in the Old Testament, come across as teachings more as lessons or morals than a word for word transcription of history. Furthermore Revelations is littered with symbolism that like many other books needs careful study and not taking things out of context. While the authors may have been inspired by Christ or God, they're still humans like us.

  • Why is the gap in women's college basketball so large?

We've witnessed a few undefeated champions recently in women's basketball, whereas no men's team has done this since 1976. The most talented team that attempted this since (3 first round picks) was in 1991 and came up two games short. Additionally, there seems to be little competition for the best teams; it's rare for the best teams in men's basketball to lose fewer than three or four games, and there are many games where the top-ranked teams barely come out on top. I often see scores from UConn, ND, Stanford's women's teams that are 92-40 and such. Why is this?

  • What if Hurricane Sandy hit the south instead of the northeast?

A friend of mine was saying had Sandy hit the south, maybe with the exception of the New Orleans due to Katrina, there wouldn't be as much discussion about it. Mainly because (a) the south is used to hurricanes, especially Cat-1's (b) less densely populated with the exception of Miami (c) lower property value therefore less damage costs and (d) it hit the NY metro area.

I see his points and I agree partly, but it was still a large storm that would've affected a greater area than normal no matter where it hit, but probably better preparation in the end.

  • Why was Mississippi mostly ignored by the media during Hurricane Katrina?

No question New Orleans and coastal LA needed assistance, but the strongest part of the storm hit MS and killed over 200 people, while NO was largely due to under-code levees. I remember seeing news footage talking about the damage in New Orleans while the footage itself was from Pass Christian, MS.

    Just for factual sake:

    Highest surge:

Mississippi: 28 ft (Bay St. Louis)

    Louisiana: 16 ft (Slidell)

    Highest wind speed:

    Mississippi: 135 mph (Poplarville)

    Louisiana: 100 mph (Slidell)

  • Is there anyone on a 2014 World Cup roster that also made the team in 1998?

I know Klose was on Germany's squad in 2002, DeMarcus Beasley for the US also in 2002. Only problem is if someone made a World Cup roster in 1998 and 2014 they're probably world class and were pretty young, 20-21 tops when they made it back then. No one comes to mind.

  • Why did Republicans care if Obama was a Muslim?

9/11 was caused by extremists, not an entire religion just like the KKK used the Bible to justify their beliefs (many being Southern Baptists). Don't see how one's religion gets in the way of running the country, maybe they don't want the possibility of Islamist sympathy?

  • Why does English always take the French names for foreign cities and other proper nouns?

Such as Munich, Prague, Ypres, Vienna (fr. "Vienne"), Athens ("Athènes"), Lisbon ("Lisbonne"), and all the major Italian cities (Rome, Florence, Naples, Venice, Milan) instead of either using the native names Muenchen, Praha, Roma, etc or coming up with their own name? Why not use proper nouns from other languages such as Latin, Greek, or German (since they're both closer related)? We also say France (just like French, Spanish "Francia") instead of something like Frankrike (Frankreich, Frankrijk in Germanic languages).

  • Why do hockey players retaliate after clean checks?

It sends a mixed message in my opinion. Especially that time Toews tried to receive a suicide pass. A captain does not make you exempt from big legal hits. Retaliate after a cheap shot or messing with the goalkeep, great. Getting into a guys face for hitting "too hard"? C'mon!

  • Why don't (most) women hold doors open for others?

I understand if it's on a date or something like that, but I'm talking about everyday things like going to class, the bank, etc. Most guys will look behind them real quick to see if there's someone behind them and will hold the door regardless of who it is. Women on the other hand rarely even check let alone hold the door, even if I'm just steps behind. Is it a conditioning thing or something?

  • Why do Brits like Robbie Williams?

I don't know too much about him besides he was in a "boy band" or whatever you call Take That, the Gallagher brothers think he's gay, and he's really popular in England but a no-sell in the States. I had to look up his solo songs and just don't really get it, no one I know really listens to that stuff and I know people who listen to top 40.

  • Why is France protecting its language against English?

They're trying to change words like computer, ipod, e-mail, etc to protect their language...even though the reason we have words like that is mostly because the Normans (who spoke French) invaded England. Most times when a teacher tells you this word comes from the Latin word "blank" they're not completely right it came from French which itself is Latinate.

Just doesn't make sense to me.

  • Do girls listen to music based on if the guy is "hot"?

I hear some of the music by people who are predominately supported by women or teen girls, and it's all about them loving a girl. To me it's barely a shred of talent A, a narrow breadth of topics to write about in music (if their managers don;t help them write it anyway) B, and it's all about getting these fans to make them money C, period. I listen to music that has males singing (Minutemen, Sublime, Oasis, etc) and females (The Gits, No Doubt, Elastica, etc) because they're music is creative and awesome to jam to.

I know a lot of girls like Katy Perry, Rihanna, Beyonce, Miley, etc and don't get me wrong I think especially Beyonce and Rihanna are beautiful but that's not gonna make me like their music. I love Jennifer Aniston but doesn't mean all of the sudden I'm gonna start watching Friends.

  • Social programs/Welfare...?

I completely agree that there are people out there who work their cans off and never seem to get out in front. I've known a few like this and God bless them they deserve a little help. But how much abuse is done by people looking for gimme's?

I went to community college a few years ago and you would apply for financial aid if needed and it would be ready in two weeks or so. Once that happened the class size shrank in half sometimes smaller. It is cash they can do as they please out of taxpayer's money. We even had a debate about it in class and one girl said she didn't have a problem with people using the money to buy a car for themselves to get to class/work...except they're not coming back to class. What's the deal with this?

  • Why are we worried about Iran so much?

I wouldn't want the death of an entire nation but a nuke would probably kill both Israelis and Palestinians. Plus the minute Iran shoots one off they will be next Caspian Sea. Again, wouldn't want things to go down like that but nuclear programs should have strict regulation instead of barring a sovereign nation to use nuclear energy. (I personally believe the Zionist movement has a lot to do with that and related policies)

  • For people who believe in intelligent design...?

I'm not an atheist but at the same time I don't believe that dinosaurs coexisted with humans (There's a museum in Kentucky that depicts creationism this way). I know that Genesis says birds were created without dinosaurs (which evolution says birds came from them) but I also know this: God created male and female on day six, then rested on day seven. Didn't say when he started or when he went "back to work".

My point is, time is something mortals have to deal with because there is a limited amount of it. What is time to God? So how inerrant is intelligent design and creationism as depicted in the scriptures?
