  • Do foreign companies need to pay US tax?

    Consider the situation:

    1. F is a foreign company and has no presence in the US.

    2. U is a US corporation.

    3. F provides software development and graphics design services to U.

    4. F does all the work in the foreign country.

    5. U pays F for the service performed.

Does F need to pay any US tax? Is it required to submit form W8-BEN or any other tax forms?

Does U need to withhold any tax for the payments? Is it required to submit 1042-S or any other tax forms to account for the payment?

  • Voiced vs voiceless plosive consonants?

I can clearly distinguish (b, d, g) from (p, t, k) spoken by native US/UK English speakers. People can clearly distinguish my (b, d, g) from (p, t, k) too. To me, the only perceivable difference between the two groups is that a puff of air comes out when we say (p, t, k).

However, when I listen to Japanese, Spanish or south Asian speakers, sometimes I cannot distinguish the two groups. To me, both of them sounds like (b, d, g). However, apparently other listeners (including native US/UK speakers) can still distinguish them.

I realize that the two groups must have additional differences to that I can't currently perceive. A website (http://www.studyspanish.com/pronunciation/letter_k... ) said that 'In Spanish, the letters "k" and "w" are found only in foreign words. The "k" is pronounced like an English "k" without the puff of air,' So there must be some difference between "g" and "k without the puff of air"...

Can somebody explain the difference? It would be the best if you have a link to an audio recording that can show the difference between "(b, d, g)" and "(p, t, k) without the puff of air"

  • How to use last.fm, the music website?

Due to the shutdown of imeem, I have to find an alternative. last.fm seems to be a popular music website. I signed up for an account, however, I couldn't figure out how to play music...

For example, I searched for a Japanese song named "Kiseki no Kakera" and arrive at the page http://www.last.fm/music/Amamiya%2BSayuri%2B%2526%... . It says "2,566 plays (247 listeners)", so I think they do have the music, but I couldn't find a button to play it. There is a "Play Radio" button, but clicking it will give me something completely unrelated.

I got similar behavior for many other songs. How am I suppose to play a song I searched for? How does "Radio" suppose to work?

  • Were you a fan of imeem?

    I love imeem!

Today I clicked on my favorite imeem bookmarks and... everything is gone... imeem is acquired by MySpace Music. I miss their great interface, huge library and high quality music!

None of my favorite tracks can be found on MySpace... all I can find are embedded Youtube videos. They said that they will transfer all the previous playlists to MySpace in a few weeks. They should have made a seamless transfer BEFORE they shutdown imeem's site. They just don't care about imeem users... how inconsiderate!

Now I need to find a good music website. Any suggestions?

  • Can somebody overseas start a company in USA?

Can somebody overseas start a company in USA without getting any visa and without going to USA?

I'm in USA but I know nothing about starting a company. My friend in Hong Kong said it's possible but I doubt it. It would be nice if somebody in the know can tell the truth~ Thanks!

  • Racket balance and head-lightness?

The balance of a squash racket is usually written as a number in units of cm or mm (e.g. 33 cm). Are they measuring from the handle or the tip?

An equivalent questions is: does a smaller number refer to a lighter head or heavier head?
