I see us riding 10-30 miles for fitness. Looking for something decent, but doesn't need to be top-of-the-line. If we really get hooked, we could go top of the line later. Is there something to be had in the $400-$500 range?

It was a thriller type movie, where the bad guy was an artist or something. He hides in someones house by painting himself to match this intricate wall-paper pattern and you don't know he's there until he opens his eyes. Can owners depend on Collies to defend their families from attack? I am not necessarily looking for the "toughest" or "fiercest" dog. I want a good family pet, but I do want a dog that would physically attack someone who tried to hurt my kids and defend them with it's life. I'm wondering if their herding instinct also gives them a protective instinct.
