  • Variable bit rate vs 320 CBR MP3 question?

Would encoding my 320kbps CBR mp3s to ~256kbps VBR be fairly lossless, or should I download FLAC versions before encoding?

Alternatively, should I just try to redownload the few songs I have in 256 VBR format?

  • Simple trigonometry question (help)?

Find the length of the arc on a circle of radius r intercepted by a central angle (theta). Round answer to nearest 2 decimal places.

    1. r = 3 meters, (theta) = 75deg

    2. r = 55 inches, (theta) = 45deg

I know S=radius(theta), and the degrees *should* translate to 12pi/5 and pi/4 for each, however, when I plug them into the formula, both come out to an answer larger than the circumference. 2pi(3) for instance is 18.8, and 3 x 12pi/5 = 22.6

Where am I going wrong? And what are the correct answers? Please show work.

  • Why do some girls....?

Like being so goddam manipulative? I've sat back and watched one of my friends get screwed over by 2 different girls in a row who would try to get him jealous by flirting and talking about other guys EVEN WHEN HE WAS DATING THEM. Each of them broke up with him and got back together (the next day) at least twice, which basically made him feel like sh*t. There was a bunch of other stuff that I don't even know about that I know happened.

I know all of you aren't like that, but wtf?

  • Girlfriend advice for a socially awkward 16 year old?

I'll be honest: I've never had a girlfriend in my life and I'm almost 16 years old. I've turned down 2 opportunities because I was so nervous and didn't know what to do even if I had said yes. You could say I'm "socially impaired" tbh. I get really, really nervous around people, especially girls and ESPECIALLY ones I like. I don't know what the par is and I don't know how to react to anything in a relationship really. I would be the person that on a 4th date at a movie would be putting my arm up and back down 20 times trying to decide if I should make the move. Seriously. I'd be a nervous wreck the week before prom, assuming I could even manage to ask a girl out to prom.

I have had what you might call a half-girlfriend long-distance before and it started with facebook chat and eventually I started calling here every week, but I got so nervous that half the call turned into awkward silence as I tried to think of something, anything to say. Eventually I just stopped calling altogether because I didn't know what it was supposed to be and I thought she probably deserved more than 1 awkward telephone call a week. If that was the wrong course of action someone tell me but I didn't want to embarrass myself by "breaking it off" when I didn't even know if she considered us that.

Not even really sure what I'm asking here... I guess I'm asking what to do if I have the opportunity and I know the girl likes me back... if I asked her out what then? I just don't know...

A girl's perspective would be nice here.

  • Using Steam on a laptop?

    I don't have a lot of room to play with.... 512mb 4570, 4gb ddr2, Core2Duo P8600.

I wanted to know the performance overhead of using steam. I play a lot of FPS' like Bad Company 2 (retail), etc, and as it is I only get 40 peak 34 average fps at all low settings except render distance and over/undergrowth, running DX9 on windows 7.

Like I said, while it's usually playable it's only by a bit, and I wanted to know whether using the steam version of a game would decrease performance because of the overhead it incurs or the way the game works... I've never used steam before besides the overlay.

Any help would be appreciated :)

What I need to know is what processor/RAM usage does it take up and whether or not this would affect gameplay. More than 3 fps difference is unacceptable for me. My proc redlines at 99% when I'm in-game.

  • i7 undervolting question?

I'm trying to bring my temps and power usage down a bit on an i7 930 (no OC). It idles ~42* C and at 30% load while playing bc2 it goes to about 67*. What would be a modest undervolt that wouldn't hit my performance too much? Also, what should the stock voltage be? I just left all of those settings at default but I would like to know anyway just to be sure.

  • Thermal paste question?

I am using some MX-4 thermal paste with the stock cooler on an i7 930. I think I applied it correctly but I am still idling at 60*. I know they say it doesn't have a burn-in time but even if it did should it be doing this from the start? Also, I would appreciate input on the best method to use as spreading it with a card was a major PitA. I know they say to only use a drop the size of a grain of white rice but that didn't spread all the way across the chip.

  • How do I mount an iso image to a flash drive in a CDFS or UDF partition?

I still want to be able to use the flash drive for storage, but I want to be able to open an iso image from it as well. Windows 7 btw. It doesn't need to be bootable but I want to be able to open the iso as if it were an actual cd on windows.

If there is a way to add a virtual cd drive to it that would work even better. I know there are programs for doing this but I don't want it on my computer, just the flash drive.

Help would be greatly appreciated, 10 pts. for best answer.

  • Dead graphics card? 10 points?

Building my own computer, with these specs.

    Corsair 650TX PSU

    HIS 5850 GPU

    i7 930 CPU

    ASUS P6X58D-E x58 mobo

    Samsung P2350 monitor

    6gb Corsair RAM DDR3 1600 tri-channel

    Symptoms-

No post screen, or anything on the monitor whatsoever besides a logo switching between analog and digital (monitor is connected by DVI btw)

Turns on, all fans start turning

    Screen cannot find a signal

No beeps, but the speaker could be wired wrong since it did not come with the mobo

Graphics card fan runs as well, but that just means it's getting power, not that it's working

    Hard drive is spinning

I know it's not the monitor or PSU, but from what I've seen so far it could either be the PSU or mobo. Any help please? 10 points. First time building (I'm 15) so I don't know how to do all the troubleshooting.
