1 AnswerLaw & Ethics7 years agoLooking for some basic advice for my poor dog's swollen paw :(?
So my dog has only 3 paws as it is, so I am generally overly-sensitive when anything happens to one of them or her legs. However my crazy obsessive nature has led to the positive outcome that I now know a lot about my dog's health and canine health in general. I am taking classes right now to be a veterinary assistant but unfortunately I have a whole brand new problem I've never seen on her (hooray :-/).
Anyway, we were running around (well, she was being a wild animal while I was walking lol) in the woods and managed to run right into a thorn-filled blackberry bush and ended up with a cut right next to her eye (thank goodness that missed!!) and on one of her hind legs the pad of the paw had been sliced a bit. All that is better now and healing fine, but tonight all of a sudden, on her other back paw that was fine before, she has now been licking and licking until she licked the fur off and its a bit swollen/inflamed, and red (at least where her pads are white). I really poked and prodded to make sure there is no object stuck and from what I can see no bite or sting.
Now that she has stopped licking the swelling is starting to go down. So I guess my question is, is there anything I should do for her tonight so she is comfortable until I can get to or call my vet in the morning...and/or is this a simple thing that now that she has probably gotten whatever was stuck out of there it will get better on its own?
Thanks in advance
1 AnswerDogs7 years agoHelp! Where did my iPhone notes go?
I think it may be time for a new phone soon since mine keeps acting up recently, but until I have the $$ to purchase one, I am stuck with this one.
I opened my phone and found a whole bunch of recently created notes gone, and I remembered I had noticed them showing up in my email account again recently so I checked there first and couldn't find the copies. I checked my phone and all the notes *left* in my phone were "on my iPhone" and not in the 2 folders that would lead to my email, so I assume that a couple weeks ago...or was it last week...when my phone crashed that it added the folders back to my notes section on my phone and from there I found those folders empty (on my phone) and deleted them so that when I write a note it is only written on my phone.
I went into my computer's Outlook program to check my email (as well as trying online) but all my recent notes were mysteriously gone from both there and my phone. Like my email backed them up off my phone and then decided to delete them anyway. I had looked in my notes (on the phone) today and found 4+ missing, was able to find them in the email account, but then they disappeared right in front of me OUT of the email folder.
My issue is that at least 2 of those were really long and important...how do I find them to recover them without "recovering" my iPhone and losing data that is still saved there? I have a macbook if that helps.
Thanks!
4 AnswersCell Phones & Plans7 years agoWill my dog be alright after she ate almost an entire package of McVitie's Digestive Biscuits?
So I accidentally left my dog alone with an open door (I meant to & usually do close the door so she cannot get in) back into "her" (my) bedroom, and so she had unsupervised access to my bedroom (which I had left for maybe 3-5 minutes and so didn't bother to go through the whole ordeal of doggie-proofing it) and thus with access to a large variety of human food to get into as well as many dog treats within reach. She chose to eat the closest thing/also the easiest to get into, which luckily was *not* the food containing chocolate that was also out, I imagine because she was trying to eat it all before I got back because when I walked back into the room...before I even said "NO! LEAVE IT!" she had started to lay back/crouching into as small of a dog as she could make herself and she looked incredibly guilty...but of course that didn't stop her from eating up the crumbs left behind after I picked up the packaging lol.
SO, onto the question part of this--->She ate almost a full package of McVities (original) Digestive Biscuits a bit ago. Again there was no chocolate...but there is a lot of fiber/wheat/sugar in these. She is 42lbs, is that entire pack of Digestives going to harm her in any way? Is that much fiber going to block her up? Is the wheat going to give her some bad reaction? Her stomach of course is very full after eating so much, but she has also been passing a LOT of smelly gas into my room so I know she doesn't have bloat. I'm more worried about that much fiber?
4 AnswersDogs7 years agoCurious for opinions of the Ashworth College Veterinary Assistant program?
I am looking for opinions most specifically about the veterinary assistant program from Ashworth College, but if anyone else has gone there for another degree and has something to add I would welcome the extra thoughts.
I am looking for answers from people who have enrolled in Ashworth (again, preferably in the Vet Assist. program), and have started the coursework whether you finished it or not. If you did enroll and then DID finish the program-what did you like/dislike, how were job prospects when you got out into the real work" at.
If you enrolled/registered, started the coursework and then chose to cancel/terminate enrollment, not continue with your education at Ashworth, or found negative things related to Ashworth either early on in the course of your studies or later on after being in the program for a while or even completing the program I would love to hear why you chose to do so an what has been going on to influence said decisions.
Thank you!
2 AnswersHigher Education (University +)7 years agoHow do you re-litter box train a cat *AND* stop them from pooping and peeing other places?
The first time I moved back in with my dog my parents' cats were fine and co-existed in the house. I moved away and ended up back (I know, lame) and my dad's cat (about 10 years old now?) decided to go live outside in a space under our house (so she didn't exactly go far) rather than share the house with the dog again. She has decided now to return inside, however she decided that litter boxes were dumb and is pooping and peeing all over the house, towels, laundry, carpet, hard/non-porous floor....everything except a litter box. And she does it almost spitefully-my mom walked in their room the other day and this cat stepped out of the litter box, looked my mom straight in the eye, squatted and peed on the floor (or on a shirt my dad had left there) right in front of the litter box rather than in the litter box. She has been doing this so much for so long now (she has been more of an indoor cat again for about 2 months maybe?) that our other female cat is starting to follow her example.
My dad insists that using a litter box is just instinctual for a cat and that you can't train them so he won't research or do anything about it, my mom is doing the laundry and cleaning up after his cat and is furious and (doesn't really, just an expression) wants to kill the cat or make her live outside again, and I am tired of smelling it and stepping in wet piles or having my clothes/belongings ruined by his cat. I've taken on the task of laundry now and vinegar does the trick, but the point is that the cat shouldn't be finding baskets of laundry to pee in to begin with.
How can we re-train her to use the litter boxes (we have four in various places of the house with our 3 cats), AND make other places, like the laundry room, repellant to her so that she will not even want to go in there to pee and poop on the laundry we have waiting to do? (It has piled up because we have to soak each load she has peed on overnight with vinegar, and then she comes out and makes the rest of the laundry even worse and it just compounds the problem.)
*PLEASE* tell me there is something that I can do, and something easy I can convince my dad to do (besides kicking his cat out of the house) to fix this problem. Thank you all in advance!!
4 AnswersCats7 years agoWhat can I use to keep my dog out of a room without keeping the cats away/out as well?
So having a dog is a forever ongoing process of training and my dog is no different. She is loving and sweet and such a delight with my family and children, and even caught a squirrel once but couldn't figure out how to pick it up without hurting it so she just poked it with her nose (it was terrified and froze of course, poor baby squirrel).
The problem is that in her mixture of breeds (a lovely adorable mutt from a shelter) she has both border collie and lab in her so she has a strong instinct to chase and high energy to want to do so. I was one of those unfortunate college graduates in my generation who moved back home after finishing school and my parents have 3 cats that my dog chases mercilessly. One of the cats enjoys being chased and taunts her so that certainly doesn't help any.
There is a room in the house that is for the dog and off limits to the cats, and there is a room in the house that is for the cats and off limits to the dog, and the rest of the house is a shared space. The problem is that my dog keeps running into my parents room (the cats' safe room) even when she knows not to--she immediately punishes herself after running in before we can even do anything so its almost a game. Is there anything I can use that would keep a dog out of/away from an area that would work well on her but that the cats wouldn't care about and would ignore? I've seen those "keep off" pet sprays but they say for both dogs and cats on them, but thats kind of the idea I was thinking of--spraying some barrier down in front of their bedroom door and then near the litter boxes because she gets into those as well (so gross).
Right now I have a "sonic egg" that emits one of those high pitched noises that are supposed to be used for bark training but I am also using it for when she does something like run into that room or take off in the house after one of the cats--does anyone have suggestions on how to keep her from chasing as well? The noise works-she absolutely hates it, but I prefer to train her with rewards/treats when she diverts her attention away from whatever the problem might be.
Thanks for the help!
2 AnswersDogs7 years agoFor those who suffer from an adhesive allergy, what do you use as an alternative to bandaids?
A while back I wore one of those strong "fabric" type bandaids for a day and then did that bandaid move where I ripped it off really quick as I got in the shower (I can't be the only one who gets in the shower and completely forgets a bandaid until you get it wet and try and scrub your arm clean and then find it in your way). It took a little bit of time for me to realize it, but it had taken SEVERAL layers of skin off with it, and actually took a very long time to heal up right and I've even got a scar.
I have a lot of health issues and have to go back and forth from the doctor a lot, I get a lot of shots, and a lot of IVs. I always bleed enough that I either have to wear a black shirt or the doctors want to put bandaids on all my injection sites (usually 4-6 different shots). I generally have to make sure they are the cheapest/least sticky bandaids possible and use rubbing alcohol when I do take them off to help just in case.
They have started using gauze and paper tape on me now which falls off pretty much immediately, but if I forget and its a spot covered by clothing then it stays for quite a while and does actually end up being pretty sticky.
Does anyone else have issues with adhesive like this and if so what do you use as an alternative to bandaids/adhesives on your skin?

2 AnswersAllergies7 years agoIs it normal for one of my dog's anal glands to fill up faster than the other?
So my dog occasionally needs her anal glands expressed. When I first got her she was 8 months old, had been in an accident as a younger puppy and needed a leg amputated. After her surgery she started having issues with her anal glands not expressing all the way like they normally should when she poops. I have no idea how or why there would be a correlation as it was a front leg they amputated but thats the timing of it.
She has an extremely sensitive stomach, a ton of food allergies, and some environmental allergies. She likes to get into lots of things she shouldn't like the rotting compost bag, the litter boxes for "kitty roca," an entire box of dog treats, and any human food left lying about. So of course we have to get smart and remember not to leave things out and about for her to get into, shes trained not to leave the threshold of the living room so she doesn't go into the kitchen etc. She is on one of the Natural Balance L.I.D. foods pretty much permanently, takes probiotics daily, pepcid often (per my vets instructions), and her glucosamine supplements as a preventative measure since she's only got the 3 legs (she is 3 1/2 years old).
Being a dog she still manages to get into something or other, then we either wait for it to pass through her system, or if its something dangerous we have to get her to throw the majority of it up and let the rest pass through. When she gets diarrhea it obviously does not express her anal glands naturally, and due to all her allergies and naturally SUPER sensitive stomach she often has non-normal stools, and she is just one of those dogs where even when she does have normal stools her anal glands fill up anyway and she has to get the humans to help her express them.
Its not so fun when we are all sitting on the couch or cuddling up with her on the bed and all of a sudden there is some anal gland leakage because that stuff is just smelly and gross. After she had a leak this morning I cleaned her up and took her out to poop, then brought her in, she pretty much immediately leaked again, and then within 10 minutes did it again, so I knew there was some sort of issue in there and decided to check on it (she had a bought of diarrhea recently because she ate a huge bowl of dry rice someone put their wet phone into to dry it out), so I knew her anal glands hadn't been expressing properly when she had been having the diarrhea, and her stool is getting back to normal now but it still soft, but formed, and not the normal firm consistency we would prefer.
When I went to find the anal glands and investigate if there was an issue and/or to see how full they were/see if they needed to be expressed, I found that the right one was giant and over-full-->burstingly ready to be emptied and took pretty much no effort to empty. I then felt for the left one and it was tiny and hardly anything was there at all. Normally her anal glands are both equally the same amount full, even when she goes around the house leaking a bit at a time and stinking everything up (usually when we smell her having expressed them a little we take her outside immediately, but she doesn't always have to poop, sometimes she expresses them a bit when she gets over-excited, nervous, or stressed). Is it normal for one anal gland to be so extremely full-like the size one of those HUGE grapes you can get at the store-and for the other to be small and nearly empty-more like the size of a pea? Her glands are usually both about the size of medium-large/normal sized grapes when they are full and ready to be expressed, so today one was under-full and one was almost swollen/over-full.
Like I said in the past her anal glands have always been equally full so this is a new one for me. I've been trained by my vet's office on how to express her glands correctly/safely, and how often is normal and safe to express them because I know that if you do it too often you can cause problems/hurt the dog. However like I said, I haven't run into this before and wanted to know if its something I should worry about or something I should call my vet's office over, because I don't want some expensive vet bill if it completely unnecessary obviously lol. But I also want whats best for my dog 100% of the time.
Thanks for the help!
4 AnswersDogs7 years agoHas anyone else had issues with USPS and tracking numbers?
We keep on getting other people's mail delivered to our house, at first it was just the occasional letter-their last name is one letter different than ours and their house number is the same but the street number is different, so we would just take the mail over to their house.
But then we started getting some of their packages delivered to our house, with TRACKING NUMBERS on the packages!!! I mean thats a big deal, if they go online they see that their package has been delivered, and if they have bought something from say, ebay or some other random website then that seller sees that the package has been delivered and not "lost" in the mail somewhere. I mean thats a pretty big deal.
We have had 3 packages with tracking numbers from that same neighbor with that specific address and last name delivered to our house now, and each time have brought it to our mailman's attention (its the same guy every day delivering our mail) and even taken it to the post office to bring it up. And then most recently we got some package delivered (also with a tracking number) with the same house number but a COMPLETELY different street address and a completely different name.
I run a business out of my home and I need to know and have the security that if I order something that it is going to come to me at MY house, not someone else's house with the same house number and a different street address. I didn't receive a package once and brought it up to the seller on ebay, who saw from the tracking number that it had been "delivered" and when I brought up that it may have been delivered to the wrong address they said they've never heard of that happening and that its just not possible for that to happen when it has a tracking number on it. However, it obviously is possible since it has happened where we have received someone else's mail WITH tracking numbers at least 5 times now, not to mention all the other mail we have received in the past just in the mail box. And for some reason its become more and more frequent lately and so more of an issue.
Has this happened to anyone else? Is this a problem elsewhere in the USPS system or JUST with my mailman?
Thanks :)
1 AnswerOther - Business & Finance7 years agoTrying to figure out what bank this is: 1 FBSD?
I was looking through my credit report and I have had this account since I graduated high school back in 2006, but I haven't used it because it was a big pain to pay back then. I am now trying to figure out what bank that is so I can call and get some information and request a new card. I had been cutting up the cards when I got them because I never used them, but I find that I would like to have that "security blanket" for emergencies-emergencies like my dog having to go to the vet today when I have no money.
SO if anyone can help me figure out what 1 FBSD is that would be great. I am from Washington state (seattle area) and when I got the card to begin with it was a student credit card specifically designed to build up credit. PLEASE if anyone knows what on earth this bank is that would be so helpful :) Thanks!

4 AnswersOther - Advertising & Marketing8 years agoHow do I get my dog to eat slower?
I want my dog to eat slower and actually chew her kibble, but she acts like she's starving all the time and seems to just swallow it whole. I used to have trouble getting her to eat at all, and now she is on a diet so has a little less kibble and acts so hungry-I supplement the reduced kibble with green beans and carrots for fiber, but apparently it's not the same lol.
I've seen all those fancy plastic things they sell in the pet stores to make it harder for the dog to get to the kibble, and I tried the same kind of thing last night hand feeding her and putting my hand in her bowl...but even if she only had access to a little she swallowed it whole.
Please help! Needing some advice.
6 AnswersDogs8 years agoTattoos, piercings, dyed hair and jobs?
I have 7 tattoos and plans to get more. I have a few piercings and want to get more. And tomorrow I will be dying my hair bright red and black.
I of course would like to get a job still, what jobs do y'all have experience in or know of that I could "be myself" at and get hired?
I am tired of having to take out all my piercings, not be able to get new ones, having a more "natural" hair color and style, and hiding all my tattoos.
I can and will do all those things, but I would prefer a job where they either don't care or embrace those things. help!
3 AnswersTattoos8 years agoWhat is the best/nicest on your hair box dye to use?
It's been a while since I had my hair dyed, and it was by my friend at her professional salon. That isn't an option as I have moved and I am thinking of dying my hair at home. I like red tones and was thinking of maybe having one of those styles where the majority of my hair is one color but maybe a couple sections or an under-layer is a bright red or bright purple.
It has been a while since I bought a box dye and i know back then there were some that were definitely not good to buy because they messed up hair...any advice now? And advice on the intense color or the way to make that work?
2 AnswersHair8 years agoAbout a (small business) business license?
I am thinking of starting my own small business making paracord products, and yes I know everyone is doing it. So far its been more of a hobby and I have sold a couple things to close friends and family. I want to make sure I do everything legally. So before taking my stuff down to a couple mom & pop stores or farmers markets or what-not I want to make sure I know what I need.
I guess the question is, if I want to sell through facebook or to a wider selection of friends. And then also maybe to some local stores, what do I need to make sure I have? (I live in the greater Seattle area if that helps at all)
Also in addition, will it be different when I try to do farmers markets in the summer? Would I need anything additional for those or things like flea markets?
Thanks!

2 AnswersUnited States8 years agoTips on how to get a new small business off the ground?
I am starting my own business selling mostly paracord items right now, and I know paracord is super popular and "everyone" is doing it now, but that is not going to be the only aspect of my business, I want a whole pet store someday.
Does anyone have experience or tips on starting out? Any advice on where to sell, how to sell, how to market, etc.
4 AnswersSmall Business8 years agoAny tips on dog training?
I asked a question similar earlier today. My dog is agressive, she hasn't always been this way, and I can tell that she knows she isn't supposed to be agressive towards other dogs. Especially leash agressive, and 50/50 off leash. She is very protective of me and is less agressive if I am not around (at least the grooming salon at PetSmart says so lol).
Anyone have some good tips for me to make sure I am the alpha so she will listen to me.
For her to stop being afraid and place her complete confidence in me.
To stop the dog agression and occasionally she will lunge at a person if she senses a threat towards me.
And no, she hasn't bitten anyone or been the aggressor in dog fights. The other dogs have attacked her. She is not a danger to society and does NOT need to be put down. That would be murdering a perfectly innocent dog and I don't need any jerks suggesting that drastic measure.
I want to be able to foster dogs some day. She is good with puppies and very submissive dogs. She is not good with dogs sniffing or licking her face. She is definitely an alpha female type dog.
She is also missing a front leg, so maybe she is more agressive as a protective measure?
Any tips or help would be appreciated.
She has plenty of toys and we have been through professional training. I am not asking for people to tell me to go that route, I am asking people who may have at-home tips for this sort of thing.
She gets walked regularly and we go to the park for her to chase a ball on a regular basis. Sometimes there are other dogs at the park, but as long as she has her ball to chase she completely ignores them. Like I said, she doen't really initiate the fighting.
Thanks for any help you may be able to send my way!
5 AnswersDogs8 years agoI need help with my dogs agressive tendencies!?
I have a dog that I rescued from the shelter when she was 8 months old. From DNA testing she is lab, chow, and border collie. The entirety of what I know about her past is that someone just dropped her at a vet with a badly broken (right front) leg and they set it and while the bone healed, it grew over the growth plate of the weight bearing bone so it never developed correctly. The shelter I adopted her from was horribly kept and completely overrun with cats and dogs. While they tried to do the best they could, they barely had time to feed all the animals much less exercise them so they didn't know about her condition. I took her to the vet within 3 days of adopting her and shortly found out the leg would need to be amputated which I did.
She is a wonderful dog, but I am sure something happened to her in the past or that she was abused. She has always been skittish and fearful, and I got her at a time in my life that I was also fearful, so I am sure we just fed off each other in that regard.
Now she is over-protective of me especially around men. She is leash agressive towards dogs, agressive towards dogs in general, and when we are out on walks she will sometimes turn to sniff someone and end up jumping towards or on them--sometimes with a snap or a growl.
Obviously this behavior cannot continue. I eventually would like to foster and adopt other dogs. She is great with children and with people I have indicated are safe and she trusts, so I have no worries about having a family, but I am at a loss about how to train the dog agression out of her.
Does anyone have any thoughts or tips?
She has never bitten a person, its only been by accident during training while she was trying to get through me and the trainer to another dog.
She used to be great with other dogs and people, the problem has progressed. She has been attacked by other dogs and the issue progressed from there. I did adopt a puppy about a year ago and she took to him very quickly and treated him like he was her baby. Any friendships with other dogs she created before she became as agressive as she is now are still intact, it is just new dogs she has issues with, there is a better chance of a good outcome if the other dog is submissive and/or a puppy, and she HATES it when other dogs sniff or lick her face.
I realize this was long but wanted to offer as much background as possible. Someone please help!
