  • What is the "Camara de Comercio de Ambato?"?

I saw a $100 bill with that stamp on it, and I'm wondering what it is. I think it's from Ecuador, but I could be wrong.

  • Wedding cake for parents?

First, let me say that I am not the kind of bride that believes my wedding day is all about ME. I believe that weddings are about the joining of two people who have committed their love and lives to one another, and to two families coming together through this union, and most importantly, a recognition of the beautiful and sacred covenant of marriage.

Partly because of my personal views, I am thinking about having a second wedding cake - a smaller, simpler version of my groom's and my own. This would be in place of a traditional groom's cake, which we would simply serve at the rehearsal dinner instead of the reception. Anyway, the second cake would be a cake for his parents - who have treated me like their own daughter, supported our relationship from the beginning, shown us what true and unyielding commitment in marriage is, and who never had their own wedding reception, as they eloped all those 33 years ago.

Not to take away from the traditional cake cutting of course, my groom and I would have our moment, and then, as our cake is being whisked back to the kitchen to be cut and served, we would have the DJ ask his parents to come to the floor for a special surprise. The staff would then bring out the second cake, and they would get their own cake-cutting.

Anyways, I know that this is a really long explanation for a couple of simple questions. Namely, have you ever seen something like it before? And second, do you think it's a good idea, or do you think our guests will find it to be tacky?

  • Which Appetizers Would YOU Prefer?

My fiance and I have chosen a reception location for our wedding that has an in-house caterer. The food is delicious, and we have decided to spring for the more expensive (but lovely) sit-down dinner. We have decided on a one-plate option, which will be a double entree of chicken and steak, with mashed red potatoes and steamed asparagus. It is paired with bread and a salad. Tea and lemonade to drink, plus an open bar of beer and wine.

However, we have to pick three appetizers, and quite frankly, we aren't sure which to go with. These are the ones that the chef recommended, but I wanted input from the community at large:

    1. Bruschetta

    2. Pork Satay

    3. Scallop en Croute

    4. Quail en Croute

    5. Cornmeal Crusted Quail

    6. Cauliflower Bruschetta

    7. Spanikopitas

    8. Shrimp Toast with Ponzu Sauce

    9. Belgian Endive stuffed with Herbed Goat Cheese

    10. Fried Green Tomatoes with Craw-fish Mayo

If you were guests at my wedding, which would you prefer to have served to you?

  • Bach Marching Baritone...Good Brand?

    Okay, so here's the deal.

My fiance majored in music while in school, his primary being the euphonium/baritone. While he currently owns a trumpet, a trombone, and a cello, his favorite instrument to play (and mine to listen to him play!) is the baritone/euphonium. He is not a professional musician, but he loves music and plays for the community orchestra, a brass choir, the church orchestra, and his own enjoyment.

I am considering getting him one for a combo Christmas/wedding present. Because they are so expensive, I want to find a good deal on one, but it MUST be good quality. This is going to be a surprise, so I can't exactly start asking about brass brands (of which I actually know very little).

There is a music store close to me which currently has a Bach B1160 Marching Baritone (it's a 3-valve, not 4, like he wanted, but he's played and loved both) for a price that I consider to be reasonable and fair.

So the question is twofold: Is Bach a good brand for brass instruments, and if anyone has a B1160, how does it fair? Does it have a nice sound quality? Does the varnish hold well on it? Are the bell and valves comfortable and do all of those other important parts work the way they are supposed to?

    Thanks a bunch! :)

  • Effective Pay Raise Date: Is it Legal to Wait so Long?

I received a promotion to a new position on 7/23 of this year. This promotion included a raise, which is the standard for all workers in this company who are in this position. I have waited, while 3 checks have gone past (we get paid bi-weekly), and now, almost 6 weeks later, they've told me that I will recieve my raise in the next paycheck (9/24), but no retropay for the six weeks I was working in this higher (semi-management) position. I was under the belief that my raise would be applied to all hours worked after I accepted the new position. To my understanding, the paperwork just sat on someone's desk waiting to be signed. I am also aware that they have given other people in my position retropay in the past. My situation is not unique, other than than the "no retropay" part. Is this legal? Or can I fight it? Should I?

  • Extra Money for Wedding?

I wanted to have some opinions on this matter: My fiance and I are getting married in just a little over a year. My mother, his parents and I are all paying for the wedding.

My fiance and I do not currently have all of our belongings in the same place, and with good reason: we both have so much "stuff" that we simply do not have room for everything. We both have tons of toys left over from our childhood, old clothes, and two sets of some of our furniture.

Do you think it would be tacky to hold a yard sale of our excess belongings to help raise money for the wedding? Of course, if his parents and my mother helped, we would use the money to deduct from the entire cost of the wedding, not just our portion. Would it be tacky to request that our MOH and BM help? Of course, they could say no, but I don't think that just asking them would be wrong.

Am I off kilter here? Does anyone do this? I would think it would be a normal occurrence, but I've been having people tell me that it "just isn't done." But people have yard sales all the time, and I never ask what they're going to use the extra money for, so how would anyone even know?
