  • Help me find a short story?

This wasn't an old story, I read it in an anthology several years ago, if memory serves. But I can't for the life of me remember who wrote it or what t was called.

The short story was about a girl smoking a cigarette outside of her sister's party. This girl was thinking about how different she was from her sister, and how much she disliked her. And I can't quite remember how, but somehow this girl was given a vision of her future, (a visiting stranger, I think?) and in this future she worked incredibly hard to differentiate herself from her sister, to the point of making herself completely miserable. Anyway, the girl with the cigarette starts begging/asking f this has to be her future, if she has any other options at all. The stranger tells her to dig through the rose bush next to her, and smell (I think...?) all of the roses in the bush until she finds one that holds the future she is looking for. So the girl goes and practicaly dives into the rose bush looking for a future that isn't terrible. I remember one possible future where she had become old and bitter, refusing to dye her hair away from it's natural grey (even though she disliked the gray) simply because the sister dyed her hair. Eventually, the girl with the cigarette finds a rose that shows her a future where she and her sister can get along and they can both be happy. And to make this future come true, she herself has to go into the party right now and be there alongside and for her sister. By this time the stranger has left. So the girl is standing there alone with this rose and her cigarette. And she starts smoking her cigarette again, telling herself that she'll go inside soon.

Can someone PLEASE tell he what this story is?!?! I just have no idea, but I would desperately like to find it again! Please pass along anything that sounds even vaguely like this because, as I said, I read this book several years ago, so my memory is more than a bit hazy in a few places.

  • Does a medical term exist for this? Need to physically change environment to progress mentally/emotionally?

I'm just curious if there is a medical term for what I'm describing. It's incredibly difficult for me to think, or make any sort of mental progress (for example on a problem, a to-do list, work I need to do, etc) on something unless I'm moving. I don't mean moving as in working out, or pacing or whatever though. I actually need to physically change my location to help move my thoughts along.

For example, if I were to stay inside my home for a few weeks, I would not get anything done: I would start to skip meals, sleep as much as possible (following no schedule at all), spend lots of time doing unproductively scanning the internet, etcetera. But if I were to suddenly get up one day and go to the bookstore for a few hours I would come home with a to-do list, and a grocery list, and then go do the laundry while calling to set up a doctor's appointment.

Does anyone else share this same need to physically change environments in order to make mental or physical progress in their lives? Are you aware of any medical or psychological research, studies, or diagnoses made regarding cases like this?

I realize what I am describing is, to an extent, true for many people; 'a change of scenery' and such. But in my case, I mean it when I say I will not make *ANY* measurable progress without the ability to change my own environment. It's a behavior I have observed in myself for some time and I would be very interested in any information anyone could provide.

  • What would you want to see in a book or movie about women?

I'm trying to imagine what a *balanced* look at a woman's life would look like in a book or movie. I'm thinking especially of the interactions and relationships between groups of women. Anyone have any thoughts?

  • What would you want to see in a book or movie about women?

There are a lot of great movies in the world-- but an astoundingly low number of these movies offer even the slightest glimpse into womanhood. We can all think of (I hope) at least a hnadful of movies that do this fantastically well, but just out of curiosity-- what would you want to see? The relationship between mother/father and daughter? The relationships young women have with other young women? The relationships women have with other women much older and younger than themselves? The boyfriends and the exes? I'm trying to imagine what a balance look at a woman's life would look like in a movie. Anyone have any thoughts?

  • Vertical Asymptotes: (x+2)/(x-1)(x-2)?

Alright, this is driving me nuts. Whenever I graph this sucker, I only see a vertical asymptote at 1-- but whenever I try to solve it mathematically I find I should have two vertical asymptotes, one at 1, and a second at 2. WHAT AM I MISSING???

  • Could anyone please help me find resources for some extreme self-education?

What I'm really looking for are resources of any sort that will help me to educate myself on a variety of topics.

For example-- I am terrible at math, but I do not want recommendations on workbooks, textbooks, etc; rather I want to find a book about Euclidean Geometry, the way it was designed. Every level and type of math was put in place to solve or explain certain problems-- what I am looking for is a book (website. . . lecture series. . .tree-- whatever you've got) that will teach me what problems that math was designed to solve. Everyone with me? That's what I'm looking for. . . in EVERY subject.

    HELP.

  • High Adventure Activity/Location?

I'm trying to plan a senior week trip (minus the drunk people and drama) for myself and a few of my friends. We like high adventure things: rock climbing, whitewater rafting, caving, snowboarding/skiing, rapelling, backpacking (Philmont, for any scouters reading this). . . you get the idea. But we are really looking for something new. We're having difficulties finding something that's a step UP without breaking our extremely delicated teenaged budgets. Suggestions?

  • Who started Venture Scouts?

I know the program started in 1967, and that girls were invited in 1976, but I cannot find a name to match up with the start of the program?

Note: I am talking about the original venturing program-- not explorers, or various other reinventions of venturing. In the US it's still known as venturing and I really need to know who came up with/started the program-- if anyone knows whoever had the idea to allow girls into the program would be another name greatly appreciated!!!! Thanks!

  • Can someone help me find a quote similar to this Emerson one?

"Meek young men grow up in libraries, believing it their duty to accept the views which Cicero, which Locke, which Bacon, have given, forgetful that Cicero, Locke, and Bacon were only young men in libraries, when they wrote these books."

It's for my senior quote, but its too long, apparently. =// Does anyone know of any shorter ones that say the same thing?

  • How do people deal with being considered pretty? Particularly in professional/intellectual settings.?

I know this question hasn't always garned a pleasant (or even civil. . .) response on here in the past, but I'm trying to get an honest answer. I'm by no means gorgeous (thank God) but I do consider myself to be relatively attractive. The problem comes from the fact that I like to have in depth discussions about politics and philosophy. With astonishing frequency in these conversations, I am told quite politely than I am naive, blind, and very cute. (By the way all, I'm 17 and the majority of these conversations are held over the internet-- I know, I know not generally the best place to go in search of stimulating conversation, but if I could name the only place WORSE I would choose high school.) I'm tired of people talking down to me and brushing off my arguments without any serious consideration. Tips?

  • Question about faeriecon 2010!!?

OK, for the good faerie and bad faeries balls, what do people really wear?? I have seen plenty of green men pics, and I've seen a lot of women that dress kinda like belly dancers (?) or something to that effect. Lots of low cut corsets and so forth. But does anyone actually dress up for these things? Like in a theme appropriate ball gown?? Also, if anyone has pics, may I see please? :)

  • Is it possible to earn respect as a 17 year old girl?

I live a very active lifestyle with some unusual aspects to it that lead to me interacting on a business level with adults very frequently. I have anywhere from one to three meetings a week where I sit down and discuss plans and progress on said plans with a room full of -you guessed it- adults. I have been at this since I was about 15, so I'm not completely green here; young, but not a newbie. Obviously, by this point I have several people that do give me their respect, and it is returned.

I'm aware of my age. I get that I'm never going to recieve respect right off the bat. Frustrating? Somewhat. But realistically, that is simply not going to change. By the same token however, it is infinitely difficult for me to take . . . condescension from adults at this point. I'm tired of proving myself, again and again and again and again. I'm organized, I answer all of my emails (of which there are far too many, by the way -__-) in a timely manner, and I keep things on a strictly professional level with these adults. But I hate hearing the stupid cracks about how "Oh, I meant to call and warn you about that ridiculously important change in the schedule that means half the items on the agenda for this evening are completely irrelevant, and that you need not have wasted two hours planning everything out earlier. . . but then I remembered you were in your fourth period in school and didn't want to get you in trouble!" (No, no one is quite literally THAT rude; I'm just trying to get my point across.)

So anyone? Honest thoughts? I'm really not looking for someone to agree with me here, I just want to know if its even realistic for me to expect professionalism/ respect from adults. And if its going to be impossible at 17 . . . do tell, when does the barrier fall down? 18? 21? 24?
