  • Is there any epidemiological rationale for isolating obstetrical and neonatal patients?

According to the CDC, only airborne, droplet, contact and neutropenic/reverse isolation categories exist; yet, some hospitals treat these patients as semi-neutropenic patients--though orders are not written to this effect. It seems that new mothers and neonates (the latter with acquired immunities up to six months) would be at no additional risk being housed next door to any adult patient--assuming universal precautions and private rooms are employed. One example is an infant with pneumonia who was not allowed to be housed in the OB room with her mother--though an isolation room was available on the unit (if transmission were a concern).

  • What is the best or most economical way to become an automotive technician?

I'm a 50-year-old veteran nurse with a couple of education degrees. I'm looking at working more with things than with people. This is not that I'm not a friendly guy, but the seriousness of patient conditions has worsened every year; and the demands and amount of paper/computer work have increased to the point that doing the job is increasingly difficult. I suppose I would start at a lower wage, but the satisfaction of replacing parts or specializing in something like transmissions seems like it would be something I could enjoy doing for the next 25 years. I consider most private schools to be rip-offs, and I have never seen ads for this type of training; but reports say that more Americans are keeping their cars for longer periods of time, so this should mean more jobs in this area. I live in San Antonio TX.

  • Zyprexa at low doses allows hallucinations, but high doses cause sleeping 18 hrs. per day.?

Does anyone know of an alternative for bipolar disorder that will allow a person to function, get up every morning and hold a job? Patient has had multiple jobs in the past several years. She is always excited to start a new job, but this lasts only a few days or weeks. Then she can't get out of bed because she feels too depressed. Additionally, all of the sleeping and inactivity has weakened her, so she tires easily. She is also on Klonopin for sleep and panic attacks and on Depakote for mood stability. She has done flex-time and commission work, but getting to work every day seems an impossibility. She is also excited to buy things and has intermittently spent hundreds of dollars on "investments" with intentions to resell but ends up not being able to sell these items, so the money is lost.

  • How do you get a nursing job without references? Also, why the lack of professional courtesy?

I've been travel nursing for several years, so the charge nurses barely knew me for a few months, and many have moved. The nurse managers were rarely on the floor, usually in meetings or in their offices. The company where I currently work in San Antonio has a policy against giving references. I have a BSN and have done mostly telemetry or medical-surgical nursing for the past 16 years. Several hospitals list primarily PRN jobs, and this is supposed to be one of the best cities for nursing, second only to Austin.

A second though related topic is the criticism that is prevalent in hospitals among nurses. It seems that an inordinate number of nurses think that the way they learned nursing is the only way. This is particularly evident during report when certain nurses expect you to be a trivia expert, eg., have a random lab value for one of your eight patients. I've never seen doctors, mechanics or retailers berate fellow professionals the way nurses do.

  • Creation scientists, whats the best resource to prove the worldwide flood of Gen.9?

I've read the classic "Evolution, the Fossils Say, 'No!," but I wonder if there isn't anything more recent or technical. I remember reading about a uniform 6' layer of silt but can't recall the reference. I know about the abruptness of the Continental Shelf, the sedimentary rock that shows no erosion between layers, the placement of numerous rounded boulders at high elevations, the atraumatic placement of numerous extinct animal bones in crevices throughout the world, water gaps (where water erodes through rock when it should have gone around).

  • Creation scientists, what's the best resource to show that speciation has never been observed?

Occasional species might interbreed, but their offspring either die, are sterile or subsequent generations revert to previous species, eg. the donkey, horse and mule. Some "species" interbreed to produce viable offspring in natural habitats, but taxonomy should be corrected to refer to these as subspecies.
