  • How do I extrude a black & white bitmap with a free 3d modeling program?

I'd like to extrude a black and white shape created in a raster program (like Photoshop). I downloaded FreeCad and Art Of Illusion but can't figure out how to perform this in either.

Alternatively, I could create a spline and extrude that (which can be done with Art of Illusion) but the spline tool doesn't have the same level of control as I need and am used to (no handles to control the magnitude of each control point). If I could find a free 3d modeling package that could solve this problem either way it would satisfy my

  • used canoe rack 2004 ford explorer?

I have a 2004 Ford Explorer with a factory roof rack. What accessory can I look for (used) to carry a canoe? The rack itself is just a couple inches too narrow for my canoe and I want to transport it upside-down so it doesn't catch rain. I don't want to install an entire rack system from Yakima or Thule. What do I need?

  • What can I catch in Ft Myers from shore in January?

I will be down in the Ft Myers / Sanibel / Lovers Key area - the southern Gulf side of Florida next week (Jan 16-23).

What might be biting, that could be reached from shore? I'll have a couple bait rods for my kids and a fly rod. Previous time we were down was in December, and the bigger fish were further off shore, but we caught a bunch of grunts and pinfish. Anything else that might be catchable from anywhere you can access by shore in January?

  • back up and restore SQL Server 2008 DB on another server problem?

I'm moving SQL Server databases from one server to another. I don't think I can get direct access, but that might be a possibility. I did what I've done before in the same network, which was:

    * backed up the database

    * Transferred the backup

    * Created a new blank database on the new server

    * Restored the backup of the DB with the same name.

It says backup successful, but when I want to explore the tables in Sql Server Management Studio, it won't expand the database to show me the tables, etc.

Message is "The database [db name] is not accessible (ObjectExplorer)".

If I try to view properties, I get an error message with more info. It says,

"The server principal [my domain\username] is not able to acccess the database [DB name] under the current security context. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 916)

I believe it's because I have different accounts on the two computers, and they aren't on the same network. What can I do? Is there some way I can add permissions to the source database before backing it up or something? I'm not really a network or DB guy, but I am a developer so I can figure out a technical explanation if you have one.

    Thanks in advance!

  • Music writing, editing, and synthesizing software recommendation?

I'd love to find a free or reasonably inexpensive music editing program designed for writing music. Ideally, it would

    * Have digital multi-track mixing, with control over fades and pitch over time for each track or sound

    * Allow sampling or import of other sounds/recordings

    * Have pre-defined instrument sounds you can drag&drop to the timeline.

    * Must run on a PC

I'm not a musician, but am familiar with using some digital video editing packages like Adobe Premiere or After Effects. I am looking for a program that will give me similar control, but designed more for audio than video. I'm not afraid of using a very technical program with a steep learning curve, but don't want to cough up big money for something professional.

    Any suggestions?

  • What's the best way to link to work items in TFS 2008 from TFS 2012?

Using Microsoft Team Foundation Server (TFS), what's the best way to link to link a work item in TFS 2012 to an older work item? Our older work items use modified templates with rules and other things associated, which I'm told means we can't just "import" or up-convert them easily. So if we can't do that, is there any way to maintain a reference to a work item created in TFS 2008 through a link or something? The best answer/solution would preferably allow users to view the 2008 work item, but I don't know if that's possible.

  • Is this Civil War (Victorian) wrought iron decoration valuable?

This came from a house on the 1600 block of Pennsylvania Street in Indianapolis. It was most likely from the 1865 edition but less likely from the 1890 edition. Long ago, it had been removed from above a fireplace and stored in the attic. It appears to be heavy iron and a friend said probably made by a machine that would have twisted and curled the iron strips. President Benjamin Harrison would have lived just a couple blocks down the road if it were from the 1865 edition, and the nation would have been in the civil war. At the time Indianapolis was a major union establishment.

I'd like to know whether it has much value and needs to be preserved in its current, rusted condition or whether I can just clean it up and / or repaint it to hang over my fireplace. That was my original intent but I'm having second thoughts after learning how old it may be. Any antique buffs out there who might be able to tell me more about it?

  • What is a business analyst's role specifically in a waterfall development process?

I am moving from long-time developer to business analyst. The position has been newly created at my company, and I'm trying to help define my new role. We use the straight waterfall development process, and I'm wondering how the job of a business analyst specifically should be adapted to this methodology. I understand the role of BA varies greatly from org to org and particularly depending on which development process a company uses. Which job functions typically associated with a BA are particularly important when using waterfall? Also, which functions typically associated with a BA might be less appropriately handled by this position since we use the waterfall process?

A little about my organization that may be important:

    - We do have a dedicated QA team that currently writes their own use cases which are used as test cases.

    - For most projects, our "customers" are internal.

    - Our products are for the most part built for an entire industry, not individual customers though they are sometimes adapted to specific implementations. Any external customers we may pull in would be more representative than comprehensive, as might be the case if we were a contractor or custom development shop.

  • line counter rods - new to trolling?

Bought a used boat with rod holders. Need something to put in them. Trolling is sort of new to me, and I'm really not a big bait caster guy - prefer to use spinning gear and light tackle whenever possible. I may realistically see myself using 6-12 lb test for walleye, bass, pike etc. I just hate using anything more than that. But I see the need to get maybe a couple line counter rods and reels. I saw a some combos at Cabella's for 75/ea and they looked decent. Should I get them, something different, or am I just good to use some 7' IM6/7 rods with Shimano spinning reels? I live in Indiana and will mostly want to fish natural lakes in the northern part of the state around Koscusiko county up to the northeast part of the state.

  • Crappie fishing - jigs or tubes?

If you could have custom tied crappie jigs or tubes of any color for fishing crappie which would you prefer and why? I want to know if tubes on a jighead are any better than custom tied jigs because I can tie flies and making crappie jigs would give me something to do, but I'd want to know they are at least as good as tubes if I give them precious time on my line. I'm not an experienced crappie fisherman by the way.

  • What aluminum fish and ski boat models fit this description?

I'm looking for a welded aluminum hull fish and ski boat. 17+ feet long. Must either have nice seats up front for my wife to lay out on or can be an option to add on - though I'm looking for a boat at least 5-10 years old in my price range. It needs to be an aluminum fishing boat first and a pleasure boat second but must have that cushy feel.

So far I know of two boats that fit this description: Lowe tahiti 192 (or 194) which is actually an aluminum deck boat and Lowe FS 175 (and FS 185) which is their deep V.

I need more boat for my money, so brands like Ranger and probably Lund are too expensive. What other models should I look at?

  • Can I modify attic trusses for storage or do they have to be replaced?

The builder of my house used z-trusses in our attic to save a few bucks. Light storage trusses with a 5 foot box out would have cost $100 more in materials but left our attic with a giant storage room. I want to modify existing trusses if possible but would not be able to afford removing the roof to replace them if that's what it took. City code requires me to get a plan from a structural engineer but it will cost me a fee to bring one in. Does anybody know if z-trusses can be easily modified into storage trusses? If it's not possible to do, I don't even want to pay an engineer to come because I wouldn't be able to afford completely replacing them. Also, if they are modifiable I would do the work myself so I won't be able to get an engineering / modification type company to give me a free estimate without misleading them into thinking I want to pay them to do it.

  • fractional ownership of vacation homes?

Is there a web site to explore fractional ownership of waterfront properties in the US? I don't want time share sites, because I don't care about resorts. Fractional ownership is when a small number of people go in together to buy a property but there are just a few owners and a property may be managed by a management company but the process is usually started when a small group of friends or family get together to buy a vacation home.

Or is this just not a common enough concept that such a resource exists?

  • What kind of paint to repair an old taxidermied (mounted) bass from 1960?

I recently inherited a largemouth bass that was professionally mounted in 1960. Fins and body is fine but there are patches where the paint fell off. I am a decent enough artist that I could mix colors to match the background and want to repair this myself, but am not sure what kind of paint taxidermists used back then. Searching Google gives me mostly either references to professional services or modern techniques which might be different and I want it to blend with the surrounding paint.

Does anyone know how this was done? I was thinking acrylic or oil, but perhaps something else coated with epoxy or shellac.

  • sql question - is there a way to do this?

In SQL is there a way to reference a value of some column in a row you are updating, within an inner select? I'm almost looking for a way to escape the inner select which is difficult because it's the same table so the column has the same name as a column in the outer select. Here's the example:

    UPDATE [tableTest]

    SET column =

    (

    SELECT count([ppid])

    FROM [tableTest]

    WHERE [ppid] IN

(SELECT [ppid] FROM [tableTest] WHERE [pnid] = pnid)

    )

... except that the last pnid, the one without the square brackets, really needs to reference the pnid of the row being updated not the row being selected. Thanks!

  • How much should a torque converter replacement cost?

I have a 2004 Explorer V8 4X4 that needs a new torque converter and front seal.

I was quoted 1600 at a Ford dealership. How much should I reasonably expect to pay at a non-dealer mechanic, and what merit does the dealer have when they say aftermarket torque converters won't last long? My first thought was that the Ford one only lasted 50,000 miles so do I really want another one just like it?

It was leaking transmission fluid and making a grinding noise, the dealer said the torque converter was out of alignment and caused the seal to leak.

  • Trying to find a study on fish memory?

6 or 7 years ago a friend showed me an article from a fishing magazine that studied how long different fish remember lures. Does anyone know where this came from or can anyone find it? I am looking for this particular study, not something like it. The findings were listed by fish, with approximate "memory" of a specific lure and how long it would take before they forgot the lure had a hook in it. Largemouth bass had a long memory as far as fish go, like 10 or 12 months, bluegill were found to have a very short memory and the dumbest fish according to this study was the yellow perch which had no detectable memory. I would love to find this article again.
