  • Starting dating for the first time in a while, suddenly feeling intense bouts of depression?

Wondering if anybody has experienced this before and/or know why I may be experiencing this.

So I just finished a pretty grueling graduate program and for the most part I didn't have much time for a social life throughout. During the program I dated one girl which was off and on for almost two years (out of the total 6). Aside from that I messed around a bit with people here and there but nothing was serious at all.

Since I just finished the program I made a point to try to get back out there in the dating world, and I ended up reconnecting with this girl had a few classes with a few years back and turned out we had crushes on each other all along. We've gone on a few dates and to be frank I'm totally smitten. It's like every time we hang out I'm on cloud 9, and then we the few days in between dates I feel like a nervous/depressed wreck. It's a bit concerning since I felt totally content with my life just pursuing my own personal goals for the last chunk of my life and not worrying much about social things. Little to no depression or anxiety at all, and I was much more of a hermit than I am now. Now I have no urge to go for these personal pursuits that once consumed me, and I honestly just can't stop thinking about this girl.

Is there anything I can do to help this? It feels like I have an unhealthy obsession. We've spent 5 days together in 2-3 weeks but I'm already feeling this way and I know that is generally seen as moving too fast. Let me know any thoughts please :)

  • Acquaintance of the opposite sex pokes you on facebook. Meaning?

I completely forgot that pokes were a thing on facebook until like an hour ago, when a girl who I'm friends with on facebook (she's more of an acquaintance, we've known each other for a while but only through mutual friends), a pretty cute one too, poked me out of the blue.

This feels and probably sounds like silly high school gossip, but I can't imagine why she would have poked me of all people, and it makes me think it's a flirty type of thing. What do you all think? Poke back? Send a stupid joke about pokes? Halp.

  • Basic probability question...having a debate with a friend, please help!?

There are 933,120 distinct balls (labelled 1 through 933,120) in a bucket. If you grab a ball at random 10,000 times, with replacement, what is the probability of getting the ball labelled 933,120?

  • Can an employer force an employee to quit by lowering hours?

My friend has been working full-time at a job for I think around a year now (yes, actually my friend, he just hasn't ever used yahoo answers before so I'm asking for him), and his employer recently stopped giving him hours and he claims he has no idea why. At the moment, his employer has him scheduled to not work at all for the next two weeks. It's at the point where my friend needs to find a new job so that he can pay bills.

I'm wondering, is an employer legally allowed to do something like this? They are basically forcing him to quit his job. I wouldn't know why, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is because they're trying to get out of giving him any kind of severance package or something like that. Seems sketchy. Let me know what you all think. Thanks!

  • A girl told a bunch of our mutual friends that I raped her, what can I do?

This should go without saying, but none of you know who I am so I will clarify: I did NOT and would never even consider having sex with a girl who even showed the slightest bit of doubt in her decision to have sex.

A friend of mine set me up with a girl she knew who my friend claimed had a long-time crush on me. On the second date, we ended up having sex. Hopefully this isn't too detailed, but I feel it is important that she took off her clothes first and got on top of me and proceeded to remove my clothes.

I went out of town to return to college the next week, and weeks later I heard from mutual friends that this girl I had had sex with was telling people that I made her feel like she was forced to have sex with me, and she even told a couple of people that I raped her.

Horrified, I confronted the girl via text message, asking her if this is true. She vehemently denied that she had said those things, and then explained that she had simply felt some regret afterwards about having sex with somebody that quickly. I told her I believe my friends over her, and I cut off communications with her. I saved pictures all of the text messages to be safe.

I've been periodically anxious about this whole situation. Should I be worried that she will do anything more than just telling her friends that I forced her to have sex with me? Or on the other hand, would it be justified for me to sue for libel? Thanks for any advice.

  • What kind of safety laws are there for woodshops?

My roommate took it upon himself to build a woodshop in our garage. He mostly makes guitars, which he has gradually turned into a business (with a business license and everything). We have 5 people living in this house, and the one roommate who made the woodshop pretty much did so without every asking anybody if they were okay with it. It is often times very loud, and a lot of the time makes the rest of the house smell like sawdust/burning wood.

The rest of the roommates and I are pretty fed up, and we've slowly made some bargains with the roommate with the woodshop, such as him paying an extra $100 on rent because he basically claimed the garage, and we also got him to agree to pay $50 extra for electricity monthly since he added a welding shop onto his woodshop, which often times surges all of the power in the house so that we have to go and reset the fusebox.

I'm curious as to whether or not there are any safety laws regarding woodshops, especially in a home, that could apply here. I'm almost certain if there are such laws, my roommate is probably breaking all of them. Basically we are at the point where the roommate with the woodshop acts as if he has the right to have this woodshop in our garage, and there's nothing we can really do about it. I'm ready to report his shop if necessary. Any information would be helpful!

  • How much should I be able to get for selling my car?

This question is mainly directed at the mechanics/car know-it-all s out there. Just looking for an unbiased opinion:

I have a 1998 nissan pathfinder, ~137000 miles, with a "stage 3" blown head gasket. Other than the gasket it seems like the car is in pretty good condition, no obvious exterior damage or anything. Also, I bought some $700 michelin tires and they only got used for about 1300 miles before i blew the gasket. So they look almost new.

1 other catch, my registration expired a week ago, and I havent renewed it yet because I m not sure if it s a better idea to sell it on craigslist or sell it to a salvage yard.

So I m just looking for a quick answer: salvage or craigslist, and how much money I should try to get for it. Maybe a reason or two would be nice also. I don t know a whole lot about cars so this would really help me out.

If any more details would help let me know and I ll add them to this question.

  • Meaning of dream, accidental murder and hiding the body?

I had a disturbing dream last night that has been stuck in my thoughts all day. Parts are blurry, but I know that me and some friends were doing something and another friend died, and we knew it was our fault so we spent the majority of the dream trying to dispose of the body. I think when I woke up we were in the process of trying to bury the body in somebody s backyard.

I vividly remember feeling terribly guilty the whole dream and wanting to break down and cry. I was also constantly terrified of being caught trying to hide the body, and hated myself for not having the courage to give my friend a proper funeral.

I have no idea why I would dream something like this. Nobody close to me has died for years. I hardly have any trouble with the law, and I really don t think I have tendencies towards killing people...Any ideas, dream interpreters?

  • Would it be rude to suggest to my neighbor to go to a sleep clinic?

My neighbors bedroom and mine are separated by nothing but a wall, and he has a very obvious snoring problem. I have learned that he goes to sleep much earlier than I do, and due to the fact that I am working on getting a master's degree, I often stay up pretty late. Would it be rude to kindly suggest to him that he may need to go to a sleep clinic? I know snoring can actually be dangerous, and he clearly has a pretty bad snoring problem, because the only thing I ever hear from his room is the snoring. Never any talking with his wife, television, or anything. So yeah, I kind of want to use that as a way to nicely solve the problem. Any advice?

  • are these mushrooms safe to eat?

If I've got some crimini mushrooms that have slightly darkened and have a mild amount of spotting on them, can I still cook them thoroughly and eat them without risking food poisoning? They don't smell, and aren't slimy or anything.

  • Should I apply to graduate school now, or wait a year?

I'm in a bit of a pickle here.

So I'm a physics major, senior standing. For at least a year I have been planning on applying to Ph.D programs to begin graduate studies in Fall 2015. However I recently got hit with a potential setback. I took the physics GRE and got 16th percentile (I know, WTF???). I was honestly just appalled when I saw that score. It seems very odd, because I have approximately a 3.8 GPA in my core major courses, and I was one of three people in my class to win a scholarship our school gives out for outstanding academic performance, twice. Then I get smacked in the face with a 16th percentile.

However, I took the test twice. The 16th percentile was from the September test, and I won't see the grades for the October test until a couple weeks before most application deadlines. Seeing that I didn't feel like I performed any better or worse on the second test, I am not sure if applying to graduate school is even worth it. Even with outstanding letters of recommendation (which I think I actually have a shot at), my GPA, and good research experience in Quantum Optics, admissions committees are going to see that score on the PGRE and toss me out immediately. There's no getting around that.

So my other option is to stick around at the school I'm at now for another year (they don't require the PGRE for their masters program), take a few graduate classes, and then retake the PGRE and apply next fall.

What do you guys think? Advice would be nice. Thank you.

  • is my roommate neglecting his dog?

I believe my roommate is neglecting his dog. He completely disagrees with me, and gets angry and ends the conversation whenever I bring it up to him.

    Does this sound like neglect?:

A normal day for my roommate is to go to school until the late afternoon, come home and watch TV for a few hours or do homework, and then he spends his whole night out at bars until 3-4 am. The bar action goes on I would say about 5-6 nights out of the week.

This dog is a pitbull mix, and about a year and a half old. I have watched this dog grow up ever since he was a puppy, and I am pretty sure my roommate has been feeding his dog the same gross dry food his whole life. That seems cruel enough to me...

On top of it, he walks him about once every 2 weeks, and only lets him go in our small back yard to go potty a few times a day. The dog usually goes around 9-10 pm and then my roommate makes him wait until 11 am to go again. Again, this seems pretty cruel.

I walk the dog more than he does, and I actually have a job, and am trying to finish my physics degree. Yet he claims he is too busy to walk him...

I constantly find the dogs water bowl empty. I think I fill it once every day or two.

The dog has had an ear infection for the better part of the last 6 months. My roommate sparingly puts ointment in it.

If you think this is abuse, let me know, and if you have any advice on how to approach the situation let me know too please. I feel guilty about this dog, and he's not even mine.

  • Does this sound like I tore my meniscus?

I tore my meniscus in 3 places along with a complete tear of my ACL about 4 years ago. They replaced the ACL with pieces of my hamstring, and for the meniscus they shaved off two torn pieces and sewed one back together.

I got the initial injury skateboarding. I was trying a trick down a gap, and when I landed on my feet I felt my knee collapse inward and then bounce back into place. It was one of the most painful things I had ever felt (until the surgery).

I took PT very seriously and healed very well (took about 7-8 months). Skateboarding makes me happier than anything I can think of, so I made sure I rehabbed my knee as best as I could.

Ever since then I have had no problems. I got back to skateboarding how I was before the injury. Up until a week ago...I was skating a similar gap, again kicked my board away, and landed on my feet completely normally. No knee collapsing, twisting motion or anything, but I felt a somewhat sharp pain inside my knee.

For the last week I have been taking it easy. I would really rather not have to have surgery again. I've been doing hamstring and quad strengthening, and icing regularly. The symptoms haven't seemed to subside.

    SYMPTOMS:

Most prevalent going up and down stairs. When bending my knee, I feel the sharp pain at a very specific angle. This happens about 50% of the time when I walk up a stair.

Also any kind of excessive force on that knee brings the sharp pain. Walking is fine, but running is not.

    Advice appreciated!

  • is it rude to correct a foreign person's pronunciation?

In the past year I have been working in a new job setting and about half of the people I work with are not native English speakers. We're all on good terms with each other, joke around, go out to eat together occasionally...I'm just not sure if this would always be considered rude. There are a whole list of words that these coworkers have horrendous pronunciation of; alcohol pronounced "alcogol", or coordinates pronounced "coordinator", yeast pronounced "east"...the list goes on and on.

On one hand I feel like correcting them would be a kind gesture, because I am helping them improve at speaking the language. On the other hand, what if this is a pronunciation they have tried correcting many times in the past, but they just can't fix it?

Let me know what you think.

  • spam emails sent to my contacts?

I know this question is asked over and over again, but I have weird specifics I want to clarify and see if my case is any different to the ones I've read. My email account is sending spam emails to my contacts, and these sent emails are not in my sent folder, and in the From: section it says my full name but then some random email address (not mine!). Changing my password does not work.

If somebody could just let me know: do I need to get a new email account? Can I eradicate this problem with a virus scanner? If the latter is true then where is the best place to buy one? (I have Windows 7)

  • physics degree, what field to go into?

Hi everyone. I'm close to receiving my bachelor of science in Physics (and minor in mathematics), and I want to apply for graduate programs in the fall, possibly a doctorate program if I can. I'm trying to consider what field I want to pursue, and hopefully you, the reader, can help me out.

Right now I actually have a sort of unpaid internship doing research with optical tweezers in a "quantum optics" lab at my university, and it is really interesting and enlightening. However I think I could definitely get more enjoyment out of other fields...

I really like theoretical physics. I enjoy the math, and that is one thing that I hope to continue doing in the field I go into. I also really just want to pursue a field where I can really help develop the technology that will change humanity for the better. Specifically, I think I would get a lot of satisfaction out of doing some sort of research that could help make nuclear power obsolete one day. I know that is probably asking a lot, but if I could help even just a little bit to make that day become possible, I would want to do that.

Another field, slightly unrelated to the previously mentioned, is theoretical research regarding black holes and quantum gravity. I've always been completely mesmerized by black holes ever since I was very young, and I still am. I'm taking an informal course on general relativity right now during my summer break, and it is really interesting.

    Thanks for any ideas everyone!

  • bacteria refractive index?

I'm trying to do a project, and long story short, I need to find out the refractive indices of a bunch of bacteria. I've been researching all over the internet and it proving to be really difficult to find many known refractive indices of any bacteria at all.

I specifically am trying to find bacteria with refractive indices ranging from 1.20-1.40. If anybody knows of a good list or is able to find something useful for me that would be great. Thanks.

-Note: I've already done exhausted experiments with E.coli and S.melioti which have just barely the acceptable refractive index, so dont bother with those 2.

  • hydrogen molecules diatomic or mono?

I'm using the Sackur Tetrode equation for entropy of an ideal gas (approximating) so that I can differentiate w.r.t. N (and multiply by -T) to get the chemical potential of an ideal gas. However, not just any ideal gas, but the hydrogen in the sun. So one thing I need to know, because I'm pretty sure it will matter in my final answer for the chemical potential, is if hydrogen gas in the sun in monoatomic or diatomic. I'm pretty sure it is diatomic but im not positive...

Extra points if you can tell me whether or not it will matter in my final answer for the chemical potential if it is diatomic or not. thanks
