  • Hairline crack down dry wall below window sill inside a 60 year old house.?

I recently got new windows installed (replacements, not new construction) and about 3-4 days afterwards I've noticed hairline crack down the dry wall of one of the windows, from the bottom of the sill, to the trim. Additionally there is a shorter crack in my living room window in the plaster (not sure if all the way through or just the paint in that case).

Could this be a result of the window install itself? The windows operation well and do not appear to have been "forced" in (it was done professionally).

What should I do to correct it? my plan was to throw some caulk in the tiny little crack and then just paint over it.

Should I complain/blame the damage on the contractor?

    Thanks for any advice.

  • Water on basement floor question?

    Hello,

First time homeowner living in a well built house from the 50's. I noticed recently I had a small pool of water about the size of a basketball on my basement floor. I have no idea where it could have came from... does not look like it's coming from any pipes etc.

It's winter in MN and it's about -20 outside... so I was wondering if it could possibly be water seeping through the floor itself?

Any suggestions are appreciated, thank you.

  • Home Inspection Question?

Had a home inspection performed yesterday on a 1950's house, and was told that I have a 100 AMP service panel, but a 60 AMP meter (which is located within the house). The inspector stated that the meter needs to also be 100 AMPs, and that it needs to be located outside.

How big of an issue is this?

Also, there were a variety of ungrounded outlets in the living room (three prong ungrounded) and kitchen. How concerning is this? Is it true that I can just install GFCI outlets and it'll all be okay?

    Please let me know! Thanks

  • Calculate Vertical Velocity?

    Question:

A ball is kicked at an angle of 45° to the horizontal. What is its maximum height reached if its velocity when it lands is 25 m/s? Neglect air resistance.

    Answer:

Explanation: Neglecting air resistance, the velocity of the ball when it lands will be the same as the velocity of the ball when it is kicked. Separating the horizontal and vertical components of the velocity vector, we see the vertical velocity is 25/√2. The maximum height reached can be determined using vf2 = vi2 + 2ad. We then get 0 = (25/√2)2 + 2(-10)d. This simplifies to 312.5 = 20d, making d equal to approximately 16 m.

Can someone explain how the vertical velocity was calculated for this problem? Thanks :) Just trying to understand how to work these problems.

  • Does HPV undergo antigenic drift/shift?

With the flu virus, an infection does not lead to immunity due to antigenic drift/shift. Does this phenomenon occur with HPV? Gardisil is composed of capsid proteins from HPV strains, so I would assume that they could undergo antigenic drift/shift... but I never hear of a yearly HPV vaccination like we do with the Flu... so that makes me second guess my hypothesis.

So basically does HPV undergo antigenic drift/shift to render vaccines useless in the same manner that the flu virus does?

  • What's the best way for me to get to the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities) from Lake Calhoun Minneapolis?

I recently moved to Lake Calhoun Minneapolis and need to figure out how to use the Bus system to get to the U of M. I'm not very familiar with it and I have heard that there are a few "express" buses that bring you directly to the U of M. Does anyone know where they stop off at?
