  • How to interpret Sigma Notation?

~2nd post of question because I didn't have much luck in Mathematics.

So I'm having some trouble understanding sigma notation.

    If:

    5

    Σ (2n)

    n=0

would 'a sub 1' equal to 0 or to 2?

My confusion here is if 'a sub 1' means the first number (this being 0 because it starts with 0) or does it mean you substitute the number 1 (as n)?

    Note: when I say 'a sub 1' I mean

    a

    ,,1

~ the commas are there so the 1 stays at the correct distance.

  • French Imparfait or Passé Composé?

Well, I'm describing the opening scene of a play in French and am wondering whether I should use imparfait or passé composé because I'm describing what happened though in doing so I'm stating actions...

Like: Le spectacle a commencé quand les lumieres s'éteignaient. Des singes courraient sur la pièce et ils grimpaient les murs sous la tête d'un dragon qui rugissait.

    Or that in passé-composé?

  • French Lui and Leur in style indirect help.?

Okay, so I've been looking it up and it seems that people say to use lui and leur when the verb is followed by an à as in:

    dire à

    penser à

Also, people say that lui and leur are complements objets indirects which I sorta get what a COI is but can't make sense of it in exercises.

Can someone please explain why it would be:

"Je ne supporte pas vos enfants!"

Il leur a avoué qu'il ne supportait pas leurs enfants.

Or "Est-ce que tu m'en veux encore?"

Fabrice lui a demandé si elle lui en voulait.

~Like, do you say 'je veux à' or 'je supporte à' because I didn't necessarily think so?

  • How to find the changes of direction of a polynomial?

Well, for math one of the things we have to know is how to know how many changes of direction the polynomial takes. I know that a polynomial has at most '' It's degree minus 1 '' but if the degree of the polynomial is 3, how do you know if it's 2, 1, or 0 changes in direction?

  • Which way/In which direction do you get out of a chair?

Well, today I got out of a chair and for some reason it struck me that lots of people (including me) we getting out of their chairs to the right. For me, my right hand is my dominant hand, the hand I use more, and I wondered if it was just a coincidence or is it that people subconciously get out of their chairs in the direction of their dominant hand.

Which way do you get out of a chair and what's your dominant hand?

  • When studying by making guides and re-copying notes, should I do it by hand or on the computer?

Well, my exams start in a bit less then two weeks and I'm going to start studying tomorrow. Personally, I usually like to study by re-copying notes and/or making guides on the material which cover basically everything but not as in depth (for details, I generally refer back to my notes). As these are exams it takes more time for me to study than it does for tests (as it is six giant tests), and I'm debating over whether to study by writing by hand or on the computer.

Dealing with advantages, I find that for me the computer is much faster, notes can be more easily organized, you can shift things around afterwards, and it may be more legible. Meanwhile, by hand I have heard that the material you actually physically write 'soaks' into you more than if you are typing it.

Essentially, should I do the faster and more organized way; or the way which may soak in better?

  • If the sun exploded would we see it first or just blow up?

It takes about 8 minutes and 20 seconds for light from the sun to reach the earth.

So, if there was to be a supernova with our sun (even though it still has like 4.5 billion years left according to calculations) would the force and energy of the supernova hit us before we see the sun explode. Or would we see it, wait a bit, and then like blow up?
